Don't think I've played a round with the society that was under 4 hours yet, certainly going out in 4's. It will probably be tight for light. Probably still be decent visibility until 19:40, 19:50 or so.

If there are any Cantlay's out there on Friday or Saturday, put them on the clock without hesitation.

And this is what its all about.

    Cleaned and ready to go.

Should I just leave it at home?

Save me bringing it back with me😄😄

This is also what it’s all about , I will miss it but alas it has to head to a new home this year. Great memories from Last year though , super weekend.
    ( Unfortunately I don’t have Bobster’s shining skills)

1 question Captain when we get in from our 4 hour max round 👀👀 are we booked in to eat in the clubhouse afterwards or is there an alternative plan?

I know there’s some joking and banter about slow play but lads, please be mindful of others this weekend. I know none of us play intentionally slow but with it being a counting round and jug points up for grabs, everyone will be out to cement top 10 places but it’ shouldn’t mean everyone doesn’t get their round finished.

    See ye all Saturday 👍🏻

You'd need a professional to shine that thing up after it spent so long wrapped in that Cork flag last year. Trophy almost needs an exorcism after that tarnishing.

Sure ye had the bus rented down there anyway. Glad ye found a use for it.

I posted this when I was Captain, many moons ago, but it still holds true for us (i removedthe covid related stuff 😁), so please take note guys:

•Be ready at the first tee for your tee time. Adhere to the time gaps on the first tee.

•Your place on the course is behind the group in front, not ahead of the group behind, so please try and keep to a decent pace of play. We're out on a new course, likely playing in a mix of 3 & 4-balls. There are 10 minute gaps. Please do everything in your own power minimise any delays.

•The Society plays "Ready Golf". This means that you don't need to observe who has the honour on each tee box. If you're ready to hit, get up & do so. It keeps things flowing. Follow a similar approach across the whole course. If you're a yard ahead on the fairway, but you can play & your partner can't, go ahead & play your shot. We're a friendly (but competitive) society, not playing on the PGA Tour.

    •If in doubt, shout "FORE"

•If in doubt, hit a provisional ball off the tee. Better to have a ball out there & not need it rather than hike back to the tee box/original spot

•You have 3 minutes to find a lost ball from the time you arrive at the spot you believe it to be. For playing partners, if someone is searching and you're in a position to hit your ball, can you please hit first before helping your partners search. Again, this keeps things flowing

•If you've scratched a hole, pick up the ball. Do not continue to play until you've holed out. It can slow things down considerably. For reference, once you've hit a net double-bogey, that's a scratch. I know we all like to complete our full round and hole out on every hole, but we're on a tight schedule.

•Nearest the Pin will be annoinced by the Captain. For the "nearest the pin" hole, your first tee shot has to be on the green to be eligible.

•Longest Drive will be on announced by the Captain. Similarly, for the "Longest Drive" hole, your first drive must be on the Fairway to qualify.

As it is stableford there is an argument to be made for not even hitting a provisional and certainly shouldnt be walking back to a tee box.

Walk on and enjoy the view😃

@bobster453 Too be fair with some of the handicaps today you could rack up a big score on a hole and still be in the points.

To be fair most people I've played with are quick and play ready golf. Pace of play may depend on what is out in front of us. In portumna we had a 3 hr 10 minutes front 9 because the society in front were woefully slow. We were waiting on the 4th hole par 3 for 45 minutes to tee off, and 3 groups were there waiting also, we finished the last 3 holes in the dark. Myself and benny had a 5 hr 20 minute round as a 2 ball in seapoint. As for sunlight it's getting really hard to spot a ball around 7.30pm. I knew there was a reason I kept all those yellow balls😂😂.

As above folks, lets try keep the pace as quick as possible while still enjoying the round. I'd ask every group hold themselves responsible for keeping up with the group in front. I know we can't control anyone ahead of us, but we'll do our part.

    Basically all of this.

We'll have food in Woodenbridge after the round as well, they'll have the kitchen open till after our last group comes in.

Saturday we can eat in Arklow as well, just waiting on a call back form their bar manager with the details.

I'm not entirely convinced ready golf is faster, although I'm certainly not suggesting we don't play it.

But before it was a thing, if you were up first on the next tee, you walked over to the tee with that in mind and made sure you were ready to hit. If for some reason you weren't ready you'd say it and someone else would go. Now, I find it can often take a group longer to start teeing off because no-one is going over thinking I better be ready.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,843 ✭✭✭blue note

What space said about the 3 minutes for a lost ball though so I'd love to see become the norm. 3 minutes isn't much. If you can't find your ball, too bad, the limit was 3 minutes. But unless you start a timer, you can't really say the times up until it definitely is. And if you start a timer, you'll seem like a arsehole. But the searches go on for far longer than 3 minutes.

Also, I often feel bad for hitting my shot and then going over to help. It's not that I don't care about finding my playing partners ball, it's that I also care about keeping things moving. But I'm often in groups where I'm the only one who works hit my shot and then help.

Has anybody took the time to review the potential local watering holes for the society to tell tall tales as they drown their inevitable sorrows ?

Enjoy all, hopefully stay dry and enjoy, it's a beautiful course with a lovely par 3 over quite a wide stony river which I remember the most. The first 4/5 holes are too close together so I'd echo the earlier comment re FORE

I’ll often time a search. It’s my pet hate.

Current forecast for Saturday is not looking good at all. Pretty significant amounts of rain based on current forecast. Hopefully it's wrong and still lots of time to change between now and then.
