This killed Disney Plus and Netflix for me. I started a family YouTube account when my family all mostly still lived under the same roof. Now obviously as time has gone on we now all live apart, but we're still a family! That hasn't changed just because we don't all live under the same roof.

If I can no longer share a YouTube subscription with my parents and siblings it instantly loses value and I'll simply cancel it.

I know how to consume YouTube without ads without paying for it. I only keep the subscription because it's more convenient for other members of my family, same as I did with Disney and Netflix even though I personally rarely used either of them.

Got kicked out of Poland again today.

Turned on TunnelBear, opened incognito window, renewed my account again, payment went through via Revolut, turned off TunnelBear. Probably 90 seconds all in.

    The dance continues.

I'm wondering is this just a token gesture from them, as they know they're on shaky ground with the whole EU thing?

Definitely can't just re-sign up with Mexico or Turkey as far as I recall.

What do you mean by the whole EU thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 168 ✭✭DXR

It's been brought up here a few times, seems it's a big no no (by Google) for users (especially given the whole EU freedom of movement thing) to base themselves in other countries, even fellow EU countries to avail of better pricing/favourable terms/conditions.

Meanwhile, Google - choose to base themselves in Ireland for their EU headquarters... To avail of a more favourable tax regime.

    Irony overload.

Yeah I sort of went down a rabbit-hole on this a few months ago. Its a bit if a grey area, but what I think what your referring to is payment discrimination under EU geoblocking regulation.

There is an exemption for audiovisual services like YT Premium that allows a business to charge different prices and offer different content in different EU member states due to copyright/licensing agreeements).

But that exemption doesnt extend to the separate rule (within the same regulation) that prohibits discrimination based on a customer's payment method (liek your credit card) or their EU country of origin.

So heres the irony - whilst you could potentially make a case against Google for payment discrimination, they in turn have the right to cancel your account for violating their T&Cs on the basis that the account is not being used predominantly in the country where you signed up for it (so they can comply with copyright/licensing requirements).

Basically most streaming services now seem to be using payment information to geoblock us.

Yea, I know Google/YouTube are well within their rights, but I was pointing out the irony in them being so Draconian about it, especially given their own circumstances - IE, Irish HQ for tax avoidance.

I get it, they're a business, but it definitely stinks of "loopholes are for me, but not for thee" from them!

Anyone get notified about the family sub being accessed in different locations yet?

Will it be enforced, do people think? Can't justify the price of it without that "discount" really.

I'm trying to follow the itunes method but when I try to get the premium on the YouTube app it says "We couldn't verify your country". Did this happen to anyone else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,535 ✭✭✭lucalux

I lost access this morning. Couldn't resubscribe to Ireland premium.

What helped was deleting the app and using the Web browser, then reinstalling it

Maybe try a different device or a different network first, or delete/disable app then try through browser

my itunes turkey still working well, renewed yesterday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭clashoftheash1

I don't see an option to pay with itunes on the web browser. It wants to charge me the full Irish price and I can pay by card, PayPal or Google Play (even though I'm on Safari on my iphone).

iTunes subscription must be done through the app.

Any ideas as to why it says it can't verify my country when I do that? Do I need to use a VPN?

The guide says you don't need a VPN.

*Got a VPN on my phone set to Turkey, now my ads on YouTube are in Turkish but it still says it can't verify my country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 168 ✭✭DXR

You don't need a VPN after you have it set up.

Are you using YouTube on an iPhone with a VPN set to turkey so it displays Turkish pricing?

Then on the same iPhone have you topped up a Turkish ITunes account with credit ?

Are you using a free or premium VPN?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭clashoftheash1

Ya I'm using a VPN set to Turkey on the app on my iphone, but it doesn't even display the pricing. It just says they can't verify my country when I select upgrade to premium.

Your VPN is the problem I would guess, what VPN are you using, and have you tried using a different one

Have you made a new Apple id account based in Turkey & are you signed into this account.

Purchases through iPhone are based on Apple account region not VPN usage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭clashoftheash1

I did ya and topped it up. I wonder does Google know I'm based in Ireland from my Gmail or something.

I'm using Mullvad. The ads are in Turkish since I turned it on so I can't imagine that's the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,943 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Make sure you follow the guide when setting iTunes method up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,661 ✭✭✭ongarite

Are you sure you are signed into App Store with your Turkish Apple account?

Click the icon in top right & confirm the email address & region are correct.

Any posters looking for someone to make up a family group, if you could let me know?

    Thanks

Is there anyone on Boards selling a spot on a YouTube family?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭clashoftheash1

I am ya. Region is set to Turkey and it's topped up with Lira.

I wonder could it be because Google has my home (Irish) address saved for online forms autofill. I'd really like to keep that though because it's fair handy.

Sounds like you've done something wrong in the set up. Go back through it step by step

i would be willing to set up a family youtube group, if people wish to join it. would be less than individual membership cost.
