No diarmuid barron or Ben o connor either.

Had a minor setback according to reports on Munsterfans, won't play pre season, should be fit to bench at the start of the regular season.

None of the players who were with Ireland in the summer are available.

Thats disappointing...would have been nice to see meaningful consecutive minutes in him in pre season. We need grunt in the pack

Would be great to see him get a decent run . Had loads of potential.

If everyone is fit and on decent form, what's the best combo of Kleyn, Edogbo, Ahern and Beirne?

Does Beirne play 6 with Kleyn and Edogbo in 2nd row?

Or does Beirne play in the row with Ahern at 6 and one of Edogbo or Kleyn on the bench?

I would like to see impact from the bench and Ahern cement no6.

Edwin edgobo and salmoa are the 2 obvious omissions there….considering they were out for so long and managed at end of last season should we be worried neither are mentioned in above

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,227 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Salanoa was always due to miss the start of the season. The last I heard he was due to be back around the AIs. That's why Conor Bartley got another 3 month contract.

As to Edogbo, niggling injuries are normal when returning from such a long time out. If he's good to go at the end of the month, as has been suggested above, then all's good.

Hopefully both Edogbo and Salanoa can put these injuries behind, they could be huge players for us, bringing serious heft around the park.

Ahern and Hodnett are 2 that come to mind who put long injury stints early in their career behind them. Hopefully the 2 lads can follow suit.

For me Beirne has to play 2nd row...its his best position.

I would pair him with Klyen who i hope gets back to the form he had pre injury.

I'm not convinced Ahern is a 6, he has to start nailing a regular starting spot tho, if he does that then we have options of moving Beirne to 6 at latter stages of games.

Edodgo will be an impact player, depending on opposition he starts for 50mins or else a big bench impact

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭TomsOnTheRoof

Kleyn alongside Beirne in the second row with a backrow of Ahern, Hodnett and Coombes gives us plenty of pace and power. You can then bring the likes of Edogbo, Quinn and Gleeson off the bench if you go 6 - 2. It's a nice thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,281 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I think if we can keep most of them fit, the pack back-5 options we have are pretty strong tbh, even with some variation around whether to put, say, Ahern or Beirne in the 2nd row or back-row.. It's the front row really that where we're short in the forwards.

Low scoring game, both teams scored two trys each, Gloucester win by a conversion, they scored their 2nd try in the 79th minute.

I didn't see the game just caught up on the result online

A front row of Milne, Barron and Jager with Beirne amd Kleyn in the second row should be able to mix it with most teams. That's all injury permitting of course..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭letowski

I think if Edwin Edogbo can stay fit this season and play maybe about dozen games mostly from the bench, that would be a good season.
I think Ahern will be the front runner for the 6 spot, but early on with Beirne resting, I think he’ll play second row with Kleyn. Which I’d prefer, because there’s a backlog of backrowers I’d like to see get some exposure at this level.

Not a single player from Munster in that front 5, remarkable.

    Report from last night's game

A converted try in the last play saw Gloucester edge past Munster in an entertaining, full-blooded pre-season encounter at Kingsholm on Friday night.

Both teams looked sharp, especially in defence, and it was an excellent run-out as preparations continue for the 2025/26 campaign.

Andrew Smith and the returning Shane Daly were the try-scorers with Tony Butler kicking a conversion.

Next up for Munster is a clash against Bath at Virgin Media Park on Friday at 7pm. Get your tickets here

Both clubs had named two teams (one for each half) with Munster looking to give game-time to as many players as possible.

Academy players Max Clein and Seán Edogbo were among the 31-man squad with new signings Dan Kelly, Conor Ryan and JJ Hanrahan all involved as Kelly made his first appearance.

After absorbing a strong Gloucester start, Andrew Smith gave Munster the lead on 14 minutes as he touched down brilliantly in the right corner after a Tony Butler crossfield kick. Butler added an excellent touchline conversion and Munster led 7-0.

A Tom Farrell intercept nearly led to a second Munster try with Shay McCarthy just caught by a retreating defender. Gloucester then nearly capitalised on a loose ball with Ruadhán Quinn getting back to touch down after a kick in behind the Munster defence.

From the resulting five-metre scrum, Gloucester’s pack got the shove on and no.8 Jack Mann touched down. Ross Byrne added the extras to level the game after 25 minutes.

There were no further scores before the break with front row forwards Max Clein, Mark Donnelly and Kieran Ryan coming on for the final seven minutes of the first half and staying on for the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Fineen Wycherley and John Hodnett also stayed on with 10 changes allowing more players to get minutes under their belt.

A new front row combination of Josh Wycherley, Lee Barron and Oli Jager was introduced after 50 minutes with Munster nearly creating a super score as JJ Hanrahan’s crossfield kick found Shane Daly on the right wing and he kicked ahead.

Tom Farrell dived on the loose ball after Thaakir Abrahams pressure forced a mistake and a penalty for a no-arms tackle on John Hodnett allowed Munster kick to the corner but the Gloucester maul defence earned them a scrum.

Lee Barron was shown a yellow card for a cynical challenge on the Gloucester scrum-half after 65 minutes. The pre-agreement between both teams was for any player yellow-carded to be replaced with Clein returning for an extra 10 minutes of game-time.

Diarmuid Kilgallen showed his searing pace to make a break from his 22 with Patterson in support but when the ball was worked infield, Alex Nankivell’s kick to the wing was overcooked and the opportunity had passed.

A determined chase from Hanrahan then prevented a second Gloucester try as he forced a knock-on from Jack Hathaway as he looked to regather his own kick in behind the defence.

Strong Munster maul defence held out Gloucester on 79 minutes but the hosts won a free-kick from the resulting scrum and Will Trenhom managed to dive over from close range after their pack pounded the Munster line.

George Barton’s conversion edged Gloucester in front for the first time in the final kick of the game and brought a good pre-season encounter to a close.

    First Half Team

Munster: Mike Haley; Andrew Smith, Tom Farrell, Dan Kelly, Shay McCarthy; Tony Butler, Ethan Coughlan; Jeremy Loughman (Mark Donnelly, 33), Niall Scannell (C) (Max Clein, 33), John Ryan (Kieran Ryan, 33); Evan O’Connell, Fineen Wycherley; Ruadhán Quinn, John Hodnett, Brian Gleeson.

    Second Half Team

Munster: Thaakir Abrahams; Shane Daly, Seán O’Brien, Alex Nankivell, Diarmuid Kilgallen; JJ Hanrahan, Paddy Patterson; Mark Donnelly (Josh Wycherley, 50), Max Clein (Lee Barron, 50), Kieran Ryan (Oli Jager, 50); Conor Ryan, Fineen Wycherley (Evan O’Connell, 60); Seán Edogbo, John Hodnett (Ruadhán Quinn, 60), Jack O’Donoghue (C).

Munster's homegrown front five options/pecking order?

1st XV: 1. Josh Wycherley, 2. Diarmuid Barron, 3. John Ryan, 4. Edwin Edogbo, 5. Thomas Ahern; 16. Niall Scannell, 17. Mark Donnelly, 18. Kieran Ryan, 19. Fineen Wycherley

    2nd XV: 1. Emmet Calvey, 2. Danny Sheahan, 3. Conor Bartley, 4. Conor Ryan, 5. Evan O'Connell; 16. Max Clein, 17. ?, 18. Darragh McSweeney, 19. Conor Kennelly

Of course, Ronan Foxe and George Hadden were never pros elsewhere, so if Munster can develop them they'll deserve significant credit for it.

The new Munster away jersey could pass for an Ulster jersey

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,227 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

It's not the first white away jersey we've had. I can remember a Paul Warwick scoring a drop goal away to Sale in a white kit.

The new home Jersey is selling well, only small and Medium available

Just looking at the URC website. It seems that TG4 are only covering the home matches. Am I correct in this?

RTE didn't bid for games in the latest rights package. TG4 have the same amount of games as they had previously and the rest will be on Premier Sports.
