Fun fact, the old links to motors forum (ie vbulletin links) still resolve to the new, unrelated non vbulletin forum. I remember the good old forum 47 days!

Jesus. All that backlinking. No wonder it costs so much to run the place.

In unrelated news. I didn't know BMW made a steam-powered 1-series until I saw one this morning near the Blanchardstown shopping centre. That was some cloud of steam going down the road.

Have a bit of a conundrum folks..

I have a 2nd car, a 2006 BMW 320d M-Sport Auto (M47 163BHP engine). It was relegated to our 2nd car when we got an EV in 2020, and for some reason we've kept it going since then as from time to time it's handy having a 2nd car on the driveway, but it can also spend weeks/months sitting idle..

I love the car, have had it since 2012, but it's a bit of a killer paying €710 each year to tax it, especially when it might not even do 700km in a year!! Current mileage is about 315,000km.

I'm not too keen to revert back to a single car, so was thinking to 'upgrade' it, but as cheaply as possible, and was even thinking a 2nd EV would be ideal (even an older Leaf/Zoe with sub 100km range would suffice).

Not really sure what my question is, but I guess to start off, would dealers take scrappage against 2nd hand cars or is it only for new car sales?

Would there even be such a market for such a car privately? I can't find an auto in similar spec on done deal…

Would it be worth throwing into Bangernomics? I've actually never even sold a car before as this was the 1st car I bought myself!

Any help/advice would be most welcome..

If it was priced right it would sell in a couple of days on Donedeal. But the type of customers it will attract might put you off selling it privately. Any dealer would take it as a trade in but you’ll get more selling it privately.

At the very least I think you should be buying something with cheap tax. Maybe a hybrid or 1.0 petrol. But then again, do you really want to spend thousands on a new car to save a few hundred per year? Have you considered declaring the car off the road when not in use, or changing the ownership every now and again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,140 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Yeah, I think the private route would be a non runner as I don't think I'd be interested in all that goes with that…

For a replacement I was thinking no more than probably ~€4k, and ideally with something electric for the €120 a year tax, and cheaper running costs.. and I'd really like to avoid an ICE/hybrid if I could.

Haven't considered declaring off road, as would randomly need to use the car, but some of that would be known in advance, like airport runs etc…

What benefit could be gained from changing ownership? is there some sort of grace period for a new owner to not be liable for previous tax dues?

Well, officially the car cannot be taken from you at the roadside unless the tax is more than 3 months expired. And then changing the ownership would clear the tax arrears. But doing this might not be viable long term

For what it’s worth I sold my 2005 non-msport manual with 300k kms for 1500 a few months ago. Was an absolute ball-ache selling it, the type of clientele it attracted did my head in. Was advertised for around 3 weeks.

Unfortunately the typical type of buyer for that car of that vintage and price will be looking to diff it on roundabouts or burnouts at crossroads.

    Hi all,

Just a quick question. I have a 132 1.6TDI Octavia and I was looking to get the manual gearbox oil changed. There is currently 373,000 Km on the clock. I spoke to my local ex-mechanic and he reckons that it has to be changed every 80,000-100,000km. I searched on Facebook and people have said different thing. Some say the oil in the manual gearbox does not need to be changed, only the DSG gearbox oil does. Others say it's every 150k-200k miles. I downloaded the user manual off Sokda.ie and it doesn’t mention changing the gearbox oil in any shape or form… Does anyone here know for sure and can give me a correct answer?? Thanks!

Both were, one will probably be a write off. The other is going to be a massive pain to get the tiny pane of glass they smashed. They were just doing damage, you'd steal them both with a flat head screwdriver.

Yeah unfortunately they are magnets for the little scrotes. Just not worth the hassle any more

You can declare it off the road, then on the day you need to drive it go online on your phone and tax it for the minimum 3 months from that date. You may have issues with insurance and beware open driving or driving other cars often have small print not covering you if you own the other car or are in same household or the car does not have it's own policy.

Maybe consider a classic, 56 euro tax, insurance typically 190 euro. Car must be more than 30 years old.

EV tax is 120 euro but depreciation could easily be 1000 per year on any EV.

    Hi all,

The car failed tonight on a broken rear spring. Instead of replacing 1 spring. I was considering getting a set of lowering springs and replacing the 4. Would this be acceptable? I wouldn't want to fail it again on the same thing. I guess what I am asking is, has it to be the same type of spring for the retest as it was for the first test? 🧐

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭Anois_

No you can lower the car. I sent many cars through with lowering springs installed. It goes by each side of the car rather than a set number so if the same spring is on the other side they will be in and around the same within the tolerance they allow in NCT test.

Anyone ever encounter those ministerial A8s on the M7 in the mornings?

Two of them today about 20 minutes apart. Come flying up the outside lane at significantly over the limit (regardless of traffic at the time) and when they come up behind something, on come the blue lights until they bully their way through.

Seems to be a standard procedure as I've encountered this numerous times over the years but it's f*cking ridiculous, especially in busy commuter traffic.

Don't know or care who's in the back. They're not the politburo!

    Help me choose!

Two nice motors, Skoda Superb Combi sportline. Nice spec, acres of room, and a nice spec with a panaromic sunroof:

    http://www.adverts.ie/38098799

Or, Vw Arteon Shooting Brake R-line. Gorgeous looking car, similar mileage but a year older and 2k cheaper. Bit tighter inside but i believe still roomy? Quieter on the road. Both the same engines.

    http://www.adverts.ie/38517124

Money is a factor so the second is maybe more prudent. I have also loved the shooting brake for a long while, but have recently also come to love the Superb.

    Feeling quite torn...

    Hi all,

I have the NCT retest now at 8:40. An engine management light came on this afternoon. Can anyone here confirm if I'm toast??? :( It wasn't on for the main test. I thought that only the failed items would be retested? Is this correct? I can't remember for sure and I can't find any deffinate answer online.

No fail if petrol. Unsure about diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,738 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

EML is a fail on a diesel car, not so on a petrol car.

I'd say being a retest you have a good chance of a pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,610 ✭✭✭✭User1998

They're only testing the suspension so you should be fine

    Did it pass?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,143 ✭✭✭job seeker

Thanks everyone, yeah it passed. User1998 was right, it was only the failed items, spring, headlights needed adjusting and 1 tyre was worn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,727 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Evenings getting darker quickly again which means more fun with headlights.

More annoying than the one eyed types are those who refuse to dip their lights on motorways around other traffic.

Like the NI reg dope I encountered last night who was trying to burn my eyes out behind me while keeping speed but refused to pass either.

Finally had enough and slowed until he did but even then I had to deal with cars on the other side blinding me while flashing at him. Flashing him myself to make the point made no difference either.

The point was finally made when I passed him a second time, this time leaning on the horn, after which he stopped trying to pace/blind me and dropped back out of sight.

More months of this sort of nonsense ahead - yay!

Had a 300km drive on saturday between wexford and dublin, most at night, and I was reminded of exactly the same as the above. I hate the fact that people no longer know how to use lights.

The problem is that there's not really a consistently reliable way to deal with it. Even on well lit stretches like say the N7 between the M50 and Naas does it still occur.

Most get the hint after flashing them, but for guys like the one I encountered there's clearly no reasoning with them.

Speed up to get far enough ahead to eliminate the problem.. Risk getting done for speeding and they may just keep up anyway as though they're using you as a pace car or something

Slow down.. They either stay with you or they overtake and you get blinded from the other side with cars flashing at them.

My solution was far from ideal and not my first preference, but no real alternative either.
