will be just Moncrieff left, and even he is a lot more 'snarky' than he used to be. God forbid someone has a different opinion to him !!

Same here. I had to switch to RTE's breakfast show as I couldn't take Ciara Kelly (me,me,me) any longer. Now Claire Byrne, the epitome of blandness, low brow, safe, uncontroversial. I'm female by the way before anyone throws it at me that I'm a mysogynist. As another poster said, non stop tabloid on Newstalk.

(I like Shane though and Sean Moncrieff and the science and history programmes.)

Yea, I can get Pat probably wants to ease back on the schedule at this stage, but Claire Byrne?? Can't see Pat's weekday listeners being happy with the trade.

Sad to see him leave weekday slot.Very little options now and no interest in tuning into Claire Byrne.

Is Anton Savage's weekend show gone now? It seemed to be doing well, unlike his previous Today FM show.

Have to remember Anton is full-time with the Communications Clinic. Wonder will he just focus on that and then pop up for cover from time-to-time.

Which is a farcical conflict of interest in reality.

The arrangement he had seemed perfect, but you never know what's going on behind the scenes.

What will his role be on the Bauer board? Not much information on the link posted earlier. I presume it comes with mega riches.

Bizarre decision by Bauer to hire Claire Byrne - she won't bring listeners with her- those that listened to that slot will listen to RTE no matter what. Inertia. It's a mistake by them.

Still, one less ridiculous wage off the licence fee-payers hands and certainly an improvement of a presenter with David McCullagh.

Hopefully he brings it back to the show it was with Sean O'Rourke and Pat before him.

Also with Pat moving to the weekend it's a great improvement on bland, compromised friend of politicians, Anton and will be good competition for another of RTE's overpaid, talent-less presenters - Brendan O'Connor. How he ever got that gig is beyond me. He's dreadful.

I read on the forum that Dearbhail is there more often than Brendan. So Pat will be up against her.

maybe Anton will defect to RTE and take on LiveLine. That's the only unannounced gap now.

Love Pat Kenny, there's nobody that comes close to him. Glad he is cutting back, he owes us nothing, but delighted he will still be around at weekends, hope it's lively!

Haha. I like Anton as a stand-in for Pat, and for his own show. He'd be a disaster for Liveline.

    Not so sure about that.

B0'C has done very well growing the listenership .

RTE's Brendan O'Connor the big winner as latest JNLR figures revealed https://share.google/Gf3BIQMBMiEVhgXZz

I used to like BOC both as a journalist and a presenter. He does the 1-2-1 interviews very well still.

However he is terrified of his own shadow, he cuts off good interviews to cover his backside , the amount of times he says " in fairness so and so isn't there to defend themselves" drives me mad. He has the producer in his ear all the time or else he has been in trouble before and got sued maybe? Either way it makes for very disjointed, tiresome and frustrating listening. Pat Kenny never does this.

I won’t be listening to Claire Byrne! I’m sorry to see Pat Kenny go from weekdays. Will tune in to hear him at the weekend. Will make a change from Brendan O’Connor.

Any chance Andrea Gilligan would hang up the microphone?
    shes some dose.

You would imagine that Newstalk will shake up their broadcast schedule, Ciara Kelly and Johnatan Healy could do with being replaced, two lightweights and very poor performers.

Not a huge fan of Claire Byrne but she is a good journalist and interviewer.

He has really excelled with some of the 1-2-1 interviews.

Some of those interjections can be a bit clunky but I don't find them awkward enough to spoil the flow entirely.

Either way the listeners seem to like him and it may be an uphill battle for PK.

You’d imagine Pat will be missing as often as BO’C and this is part of his winding down so a year or two maximum before he retires completely. It’s probably more of a thank you from Bauer than a serious schedule assault on weekend mornings

Claire Byrne is not a patch on Pat Kenny. really strange decision to give her the gig. I think I'll be switching off entirely

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

I do admit I would have thought Newstalk would have gone for someone like Mary Wilson, who is due to retire later this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,986 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

They should still, and do a proper morning news.

Reading the various radio threads would lead one to believe that most of us who listen to radio are oddballs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭Jakey Rolling

I'll likely tune into CB, she's my go to on podcasts to get a second view on current affairs stuff covered on PK.

Anton could be good, but frequently asks rambling minute long questions in an attempt to show his knowledge on a subject - some of the interviewees must wonder why they were asked on when they are left with nothing to add or could often answer with a "yes" or "no". And his clipped style, delivering his opinion as fact - too brash at times.

I actively avoid the breakfast show now due to CK, and anyone would be better than that whining dose on Lunchtime Live.

God, just listening to Pat discussing that accident in Lisbon and the informed questions and breadth of knowledge he brought to it. The thoughts of you know who discussing same. I know Pat is an engineer but is she interested in anything? I doubt she even reads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,986 ✭✭✭Charles Babbage

An engineer can take up an interest in politics etc. Pat would do a show with a discussion about the Middle East with Robert Fisk and then switch seamlessly to discussing the water supply in Dublin. Clare Byrne might be good on fashion, but she will never do a good discussion on the impact of wind energy on the national grid.

Pat is being a bit of a pr1ck to that hotel owner.

Maybe it's cos the hotel.owner said "there is dynamic pricing when it comes to radio advertising".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭ellejay

I caught the end of this segment where Pat corrected the head of some hotel federation that actually they did have the full facts, the listener gave them the facts, ie hotel cancelled the room booking and sold it at a higher price, night of Taylor Swift concert.

I thought Pat was dead right to counter the attitude of "sure what would the listener know they're not a hotelier." The Price gouging by hotels is a hot topic for years.

Dynamic pricing and cancellation of existing bookings are totally different things so I would agree with Pat taking him up on that
