I'd say the return of The Seven O'Clock Show, and the News moving back to 6:30.

Noel Edmonds’ Kiwi Adventure - I wonder will they show this eventually.

Apart from their sport coverage, I can't remember anything they've properly invested in since they took over TV3.

No big shows like The Apprentice, red Rock, Ireland's Got Talent, Irish Bake Off, Take Me Out etc.. no shows worth talking about any longer. Its pretty disgraceful that they're allowed to have 4 channels which are near devotion to the ITV Studios catalogue.

Anyone notice the volume of Ireland AM promo after the 5:30 news is significantly higher than the usual output?. I have noticed it several times and happened again this evening. You feel the need to turn the volume down the second it comes on

I finally got around to checking this and yes it's higher and also a bit harsh listening to Martin King.

You'd wonder at the wisdom of VM taking the Portugal-Ireland summer tour rugby 'international'. Portugal were as poor as a side can be, the match an atmosphere free one sided hammering. They kept cutting to the sparse mostly retirement aged touring irish fans sitting forlornly and bored looking in some empty open sided athletics park. I know that many of these fans paid €4k for the 2 week 'tour' package for the Georgian match, followed by this tripe. Actually, when considering the weekends offerings, the Lions v Aus/NZ match (Sky) was another training ground runout and hammering, pointless to watch. Meath v Donegal, yet another hammering, over as a spectacle in the first half. The Fifa World Club final (Freesat Ch5 and DAZN) was at least a top drawer spectacle as Chelsea dismantled PSG. Even the scoreless second half had some great moments, though you knew the match was over. Best of the four anyway. I didn't get to watch any of the woman's Euros, just a few highlights, but they were probably better use of your viewing time. Likewise the inevitable Kerry result.

As a rule, we don’t talk about what actually happens on the pitch when we discuss sports here.

I would say though fair play to VMTV for broadcasting these two internationals, which are (irrespective of the weakness of the opposition) fully capped test matches - often the equivalent games in the past got no coverage, although at least these days there is RPTV to step into the breach, I imagine many fans don’t even know it exists. I give VMTV a lot of stick for their “Twelve Hours a Day of the Chase” programming strategy so credit where credit is due.

I agree, I only watch VM for sport. it's not their fault they were given a turkey.

The alternative last week (5th July) was a Christmas Celebrity Catchphrase episode. So was good to see live sport on their channel last week.

Actual quality of picture of Portugal game (not fault of VM as they were not host broadcaster) seemed poor at best.

TMO not working (again nothing to do with VM) gave impression of an amateurish occasion in front of a mainly empty stadium.

Add in the totally one sided scoreline.

No problem with VM covering the game but they really were left with a bum steer as they say

No Autumn press release so far from Virgin Media. Albeit, they can prob just copy the ITV press release and paste the VM logo on it.

Their press team seems to be so slow in uploading any type of press release, with a lot of stagnant pages out there on the web. The VM TV press page hasn't been updated in 6 years, the VM Solutions page in a year - which is embarrassing seeing that they also try to promote shows like Elaine which finished a long time ago, and even the main VM presser has only 1 press release in a year.

They seem to have ads on promoting the next few months.

Any mention of conference league coverage, what with Shels and Rovers both in.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,678 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Premier have that semi-exclusively (TNT can also broadcast their coverage here)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,156 ✭✭✭iseegirls

Oh i haven't seen any of them yet. I've seen a Chicago Fire and Chicago PD promo for VM Player, that's about it.

I will call it TV3 player if you insist on VM Player, it VM Play may even be VMTV Play! It's playtime.

Yes, it seemed to be mainly about VM Play.

VM to share the Six Nashings Rugby free to air with RTE for 4 more years, so that's good isn't it? They should get their finger out though and up the Saorview broadcast to HD. It's pathetic at this stage of the game, the extra Mbs needed on the Muxes are relatively trivial, and are just 'lying around' unused anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭Delta2113

Virgin Media Television have no intention to pay for the HD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,246 ✭✭✭deezell

Nor should they. Their single Analogue TV3 UHF channel bandwidth they were paying for was sufficient to carry all their current four channels in HD after the switch to digital, but RTNL was given a monopoly to screw them. The UHF bands should have been split among a number of providers, who could compete for provision of digital carriers within a single mux. The row over HD goes right back to this. It needs sorting at a higher level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,235 ✭✭✭RoTelly

In fairness that was a decision made by the regulators. RTÉ I think were given 2 muxes which they currently use. You'd need to question both CnaM and ComReg on the use of the bands.

Does 2RN have a 3rd Mux available to them if required?

Without looking up the historic analogue broadcast channels, there were as many as 5 UHF channels per transmitter, and at least 3 where Rte 1 and 2 were still on VHF, as TV3, 3E and TnaG were all on UHF. Certainly the network was capable of 5 or 6 UHF per mast, so 6 mux would not have been impossible

But Tv3 were not providing their signal on a national basis, only in the high population areas. One of the original proposals, as I understand it, was for costs to be divided amongst the broadcasters, TV3 in their wisdom argued that they should only pay for the bandwidth they use and the rest of the cost was for 2RN to bear, as well as the provisionof the new technologyand infrastructure.

With the improvements in broadcasting technology could a current HD signal be accommodated into the same band width as VM currently pay for. It always appears me that VM are on Saorview for the basic national coverage and why would they broadcast a HD signal for free when people are prepared to pay for it.
