Too Short A Season: Solid episode I thought. Could see the point of taking the de-aging medication considering the challenge Jameson faced. Definitely feels like the show has grown into its own skin a bit now though. There’s less and less to say about poor sets or odd characterisation by now.

When The Bough Breaks: Strong typical Trek episode. The little red haired kid was adorable. Age made me feel sorry for the kids I don’t remember feeling much for them on first viewing. There’s a kind of heart and deep humanity to the stories now that even SNW hasn’t replicated. DS9 certainly did.

Home Soil: I loved this when I saw it first time round and it doesn’t disappoint now either. Great premise showing up at a terraforming planet and falling into what looks like a murder mystery but evolves into something deeper. Taking time to consider questions of what constitutes life fascinated me as a teen and it’s why I loved the show. I honestly thought this was a season 2 episode. The back 9 in Season 1 is really turning out very good, much better than i expected.

Coming Of Age: A Wesley episode that isn’t annoying. I think this is really a setup for Symbiosis. Seems like Starfleet Academy is a bit too choosy. It’s surprising they have any applicants at all! On a funny note, the Kirkland boy looked like a member of an 80s mid tempo soft rock band!

Heart Of Glory: Klingons! Worf! Nuff said! Great story. I had a lot of empathy for the two Klingons. The daftest thing about the episode is I’d have less luck getting into off limits areas of my office than these guys had getting into main engineering! Seems like anyone can just stroll in. Maybe Riker had to reprimand the guy who left the door open after the credits rolled! A lovely little detail was a mother pulling her kids out of the way as quickly as she could as Worf flanked by both Klingons strode towards them in a hallway! Klingon episodes never disappoint. It’s caught me a little how Worf’s being detached from his Klingon culture has more of an impact and sits deeper with me now than watching as a 15 year old.

The Arsenal Of Freedom: Good story based around the dangers of unchecked weapons development. I thought it was a good episode in terms of getting some of Beverley’s backstory and having hervaline with Picard to develop their relationship. Again exceptional character development on the bridge with Geordi. The Chief Engineer was a pain but it was a good test of resolve for LaForge. Really the super weapons system was a maguffin and went away when you agreed to buy it.

Symbiosis: Got this mixed up with Conspiracy previously which has yet to come. Good episode in addressing drug addiction. A burning issue in the 80s. I really like when Star Trek tackles these contemporary issues but moves the issue to avv v planet somewhere. Very good story and left me thinking about the nature of addiction and how it applies in smaller ways in everyday life. Why doesn’t Star Trek do this anymore? Much as I like some of the new stuff it’s just not digging very deeply into human issues anymore. I know, they don’t have time these days but, for me, Trek was about putting a mirror up to humanity on a space show but new trek feels like a space show with the odd reference to a human subject without much deep thought. I loved the last minute or so where they warped off to another system they hadn’t been before. It c was captured the excitement of exploration the show is based on.

I love a good extinct species episode so despite the very cheesy interpretation of the Ferengi I love Arsenal of Freedom.

All I remember of Symbiosis is poor old Merritt Butrick who died from AIDS within a year of that episode.

He was only 29 so there is speculation he is already sick because he looks pretty aged from his David Marcus days.

I'll be honest, I think at the time TNG finished up and the few years afterwards, most of us were inclined to agree with the idea that seasons 1 and 2 were the ginger step-children of the series.

But now I'm a little older (and perhaps partially because I didn't watch those episodes as much as the rest over the years) seasons one and two are my first port of call when I just feel like throwing on some Next Gen. They're a little more experimental and thoughtful and sometimes silly and sometimes batshit but they're eminently watchable. The only two I still religiously avoid are Encounter at Farpoint and, for some reason, Pen Pals.

I know its season 3 but I watched Tin Man last night after the new SNW episode reminded me of it.

I hated it when I was young cause the Betazed guy drove me nuts but as an adult I think it's an exceptional episode. Very sad and thoughtful while also being just good sci-fi.

When I do a rewatch I do groupings rather than seasons. I recently watched all the TNG Cardassian episodes and then the occupation heavy DS9 ones. I'm doing a Romulan rematch of TNG now and will probably add some TOS which I rarely watch.

I remember being in school the day after RTE showed Tin MAN for the first time and a chap in my class mentioned it. The first time I ever recall having a "fandom" conversation about something I was into. Very nice memory

I’ve avoided much of season 1 & 2 myself over the years. There seems to be a common belief Tgst they were crap. Even 3 who’s ago I saw a YouTube video ramming this home but it’s actually untrue. I’ll give you that the first 6 are fairly ropey but by ep 7-8 the show is on its way and by tge rvd of season 1 it’s very strong. Tge big realisation the new is how much being much older affects me when watching episodes now. Human and emotional stuff is have pays little attention to on first watch grand be bite bite and really enhances some episodes.

Skin Of Evil: I actually ended up feeling sorry for the malevolent being at the end. Something in me wanted to find a redeeming feature in the creature. They were right to leave him mind you. The headline of course with this episode is a “way out” for Denise Crosby. Her leaving hit again watching the episode, even when I expected it. She really should have hung on but to be fair to DC she never seems to have said she regretted leaving so I’ve huge respect for someone making a tough decision and owning the consequences. The funeral bit at the end was a bit naff but it’s tv so what can you do.

We’ll Always Have Paris: I love these kind of episodes where they delved into Picard’s backstory. The time plot I didn’t quite get tbh and especially how middle Data realised he was the right timeline Data. I’d hoped they’d explain that.

Conspiracy: On first viewing I was blown away by this. I kept waiting and waiting for the return of the insects but to no avail. Now I know they were the precursor to what the Borg might be but they went in a different direction. Still a great episode and could have made a great two parter if there wanted. Fantastic though and still holds up. It ready should be highlighted that season 1 has stuff like this as well as rubbish like The Naked Now

The Neutral Zone: “We’re Back!” Great teaser to get your mouth watering for season 2. I always liked Romulan episodes. This was decent in as far as it went. The B plot with the cryogenically frozen people was a little TOS in nature but interesting to a point. Again anyone can wander out of their quarters and mage their way to the bridge! The two security guards looked like the keystone coop variant of bridge security guard. Grab the intruder but just hang into him and leave him there so he’s free to interject in proceedings and hear and see everything. Nice way to close out the season though

So that’s Season 1. Wouldn’t have guessed I’d have even started a run through this time last week!

On the sets, most were reused from TOS and the movies. The TMP corridors lasted all the way to the end of Voyager.

The Neutral Zone is a personal favourite of mine. I particularly love Sonny Clemens and his low-mileage pit-woofies:)

He'd be a bit of craic to have about, I bet.

    The Arsenal of Freedom:

Rice: Tell me about your ship, Riker. It's the Enterprise, isn't it?

Riker: No... the name of my ship is the... Lollipop

Rice: I have no knowledge of that ship.

Riker: It's just been commissioned. It's a good ship.

Cheesy as all hell, but i love it.

    Symbiosis

Weasley: Gee wizz guys. Why would anyone ever do drugs?! I don’t get it!

    Yar: Don’t do drugs…m’kay? Drugs er bad…

I think the thing with Symbiosis is that it was a product of its time. Thanks to Regan’s War on Drugs a load of shows on US Television at the time would dedicate at least an episode or theme to deal with drugs and additicion. I’ve a hunch that this episode was TNG’s contribution.

It isn’t the first time they allude to this either. The hellish future in Q’s Courtroom had drug-addict soldiers, a concept we get to revisit 7 years later with the Jem Hadar. But yea…Trek doesn’t really dive into this topic as much as they had with Symbiosis. However…it’s kind of fun what Lower Decks did with their sequel to this episode.

    Low-milage pit-woofies…and help them build a memory

Classic example of a line that flew right over my young head at the time, and lands very differently now. Ah Sonny…I hope he had fun in 23rd Century Earth.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭squonk

Great kind and I’d have liked to have seen Sonny return. I think there was some mileage in the character. I also would have loved to see the mother making contact with the descendant of her son. All in all there is a great story in there following these three as they adjust to 24th century society.

I haven’t watched much Lower Decks do didn’t realise they did a follow up on symbiosis. I’d forgotten that most sides did a drugs episode back then. The theme did date the episode but it’s still quality.

In Lower Decks the USS Soritos returns to the Delos system to see how Ornara and have Brekka have coped since the Enterprise D’s visit in Season 1.

They discover that the Ornarians had survived their withdrawal from Felicium , but still possessed addictive personalities. They replaced their addiction to the drug, with an addiction for going to the gym. So they are much healthier, despite still having the need to be hooked to something.

The Brekkians are not as lucky. The Soritos discover Brekka being invaded by The Breen.

Thats actually great! I reckon most people swap one addiction for something equally as compelling but less destructive!

My cousin had a bunch of MAD magazines he gave me around 1990/91 which coincided with me getting really into TNG. At the time it was fun seeing how the show was received in the US in its first season 2-3 years earlier. It’s more fun seeing it now.

Out of hospital but still on bed rest. Embarking on Season 2 but not sure I’ll get through it all.

The Child: Interesting premise, alien decides to experience humanity by being born and growing up. The child growing older into a man would have been interesting to see but the B plot put the kybosh on that. Not the worst opener. I do feel that Troi should have been scarred for a long time after that experience in the real world. They could have played for laughs by having Worf look uncomfortable when it was announced Troi was pregnant. 😀. Pulaski seems even more horrible now than I remember. Maybe we’ve moved on in 40 years too as the unplanned pregnancy thing doesn’t seem like the huge thing it once was anymore.

Where Silence Has Lease: Pretty much a mouse trap episode. It occurred to me while watching that the crew should have been way more wary and concerned about the void and very worried that they had been pulled in but they weren’t. It seemed very out of character for the crew. Red shirt dies which is what you expect when you see a new crewman on the bridge. The self destruct seemed a bit OTT. The entity eats to kill 50% of the crew so Picard decides he wants to kill 100%! They got out of it too easy I think if they were as insignificant to the alien as was said he’d have just watched them die or just forgot there were even planning on it. On a funny note, Worf’s mention of his calesthenics holideck program being too “personal” to share with Riker just shows that Worf is using the holodeck to beat the crap out of powerful enemies and then finishing up with a good bout of rough Klingon sex! Every day! Lol! Hope he wipes down the holodeck before the next user! 😀

Elementary Dear Data: Not a holodeck episode fan but they did save money for the bigger ticket episodes. I just couldn’t really engage with this too much. Polaski never really seemed in danger and no real mystery ever got solved. It felt flat. I know Moriarty comes back so I’d take it as a good setup story for the character. Even if it was a mistake, that whole occurrence should have earned Geordi a visible reprimand.

Pulaski seems a bit old fashioned even by today’s standards and just incredibly rude. I know they were trying to go for a Bones McCoy feel with her character but I don’t really understand how the writers got her so wrong. I was expecting things to improve after episode 1 but she hasn’t so far.

The Outrageous Okana: Good episode I thought. Rogue encounters the enterprise and proceeds to bang his way through the female crew members. More light viewing than anything else. Romeo & Juliet with a comedy character added. I did like the contrast with Pulaski in how Okana dealt with Data in acknowledging he was a machine but not making a huge deal of it and not belittling him either. Data’s quest to understand humour made him feel kind of tragic as humour is in the eyes and ears of the beholder and most of us couldn’t agree on the funniest comedian we know which is because humour is subjective. It felt like someone chasing after something they’ll never catch.

Loud As A Whisper: The Enterprise ferries a member of the Bee-Gees and his backing singers to a peace conference. Unfortunately out of the gate a member of one of the warning factions shoots the backing singers so the Bee-Gee is at a loss. Really an episode about disability and overcoming it. My main thought watching this was that surely aids for deaf people had improved in 400 years but they apparently hadn’t. Having the delegates learn sign language was a fair ending. I was left wondering about Fiker and Troi’s relationship. Riva was obviously making moves on Troi but this time Riker into bothered it’d seem.

Tge Schitzoid Man: Brilliant scientist hijacks Data’s neural network to store himself and cheat death. Good outing fur Brent Spiner to act out of character. It was a good conceit but a so-so episode I felt.

Unnatural Sslection: Now we’re finally off! Enterprise encounters a ship where everyone has died from premature aging and the cause is traced back to a C research station where vertically modified kids triggered a human dna mutation to shed up aging. Bloody excellent episode! Pulaski is redeemed here. Mi don’t ever revenge liking her originally but it was because she’d been rude to days and she wasn’t Crusher but watching now I think she’s excellent and, to be fair, Diana Muldaur can act rings around Gstes McFadden. This actually felt like a hard problem and you felt they were lucky to get a solution in time. I’m finding now that Pulaski’s character is touching me more deeply than Dr Crudger. She seems more earnestness passionate. I’d never noticed this first time round! Amazing get 35 years adds! It’s great too to see Colm Meany’s role starting to get established. It’s the first episode where you can see the seeds of what will become the chief engineer on DS9.

    Re: The Outrageous Okona

The actor playing Okona, Billy Campbell was in the running for the role of Riker… went onto have a long screen career eg Rocketeer, Once and Again, The 4400, Cardinal.

Apologies, i was posting in haste and hadn’t checked the spelling. I was indeed referring to our favourite Cali-Class starship.

A Matter Of Honour: Riker does an exchange as first officer on a Klingon ship. You can’t beat a good Klingon epishde. I loved this when I saw it first. It still holds up. Surprisingly I was totally caught up in it while watching. You can’t really say any more.

The Measure Of A Man: I’d forgotten there was a bunch of iconic episodes in one block in series 2. Another great episode. Haven’t seen it in years but I still got highly animated and deeply annoyed watching this. It really struck all the right notes. Were I to encounter Cmdr Maddox after this I’m sure violence would ensue. Such a massive dickead but he does change by the conclusion. There really were a few sparks between Picard and Phillipa as well. They’d be the ultimate intimidating power couple if they hooked up! I hope for both that their evening at the end lasted much longer than dinner! 😀

The Dauphin: Wesley gets the horn for a 16 year old girl being transported to reunite a planet Run of the mill epishde I thought My biggest take away was Wesley asserting he’d fallen in love and everybody else going along with it There was a much better story here on the loss of freedom and taking on too much responsibility before time and the effect on a teenager Instead we got two googly eyed kids running around behind their elders backs It turned out much better than it should have been I thought

I've been arguing this for decades 😅

Pulaski isn't particularly likeable as a person and I think that really sets people against the character as a whole – but imo, at least she's a character! Crusher is 6 seasons and 4 movies of basically nothing. She's Wesley's mum and Picard's awkward maybe/sorta/who-cares love interest kinda thing, but I've almost no idea who she is otherwise.

I wouldn't put all the blame on Gates McFadden, I think the character is just poorly conceived and poorly written too, but whatever the reason, Pulaski managed to make more of an impact in 1 season than Crusher did throughout the rest of the series. Unnatural Selection and Elementary Dear Data probably being the stand-outs for me.

Sure she was a bit mean to Data at times but that introduced a nice dynamic too, I thought. And her concerns about him being a machine were worth addressing on the show, and she was there to allow for that.

I love that "Day-ta / Dah-ta, what's the difference?!" / "One is my name. The other is not." exchange, I think it's from 'Elementary…', or maybe 'Measure of a Man'. Really nice, sharp, effective little character moment for both of them.

(edit: oh, just looked it up and it's from S02E01: The Child. So actually a very early introduction to Pulaski! A prickly character right out of the gate 😄)

    Big fan of Dr. Pulaski.

I’m about start of season 4 rewatching with youngest one who absolutely loving it despite being dated now compared to newer series (got hooked on Strange New Worlds)

I didn’t realise I missed out on so many episodes back in day, which been a pleasant surprise

I’m finding myself that I’m coming around to her as well. I utterly went 3 decades thinking she was a terrible character but I’m now finding I like her snark and practical viewpoint on things. If I had to vote now, Beverly would stay gone. As you say she’s not very defined and is kind of just “there”. As doctors go, if I was in medical danger I’d go with Pulaski every time now I think.

Pulaski is good fun. The only valid criticism of her for me is that she is a sort of too close to McCoy personality wise.

She is kinda the inspiration for Dr.T'Ana too and I will always love her for that.

Great scene coming up in The Icarus Factor where she pretty much tells Riker she fuked his dad 🤣
