I can see alot of home games where we get the 2nd and 3rd goals quicker because we have Wirtz and kill the game.

Quite a number of games were a tad too tight last season.

It doesn't sound plausible that he was bought not to play in tough games.

How about we wait for a larger sample size before abandoning our £100 million investment!

My take is that Wirtz will work in basically any attacking role in any system as he's a fantastic player, he's just not an industrious midfielder.

Play him in the front 3 for tough games and the midfield 3 for to "easier" games where we want an extra attacker on the field.

Once again it's the same way we utilised Coutinho, who is arguably the last real #10 we had.

Seems nuts to even expect this team to have gelled together after a few games.

Arsenal next, nice home game, this game will reveal a lot .

We know Slot convinced Wirtz to join based on how he saw his role in the team, and we know Wirtz wanted to play no.10 and wasn't getting the opportunity at Bayern...

Based on that, @~Rebel~ formation may make sense in terms of Slot's thinking:

Reality is probably that we will change formation based on each game, the opposition, and who is available. In addition I think Slot will expect the players to switch system in game and also depending on whether or not we have the ball, as he has mentioned quite a bit.

Still interesting to debate what is the best formation to fit our best 11 though.

Based on current form, I prefer our 'standard formation'. I think Wirtz is going to need more time to earn his place in the team.

I would be tempted to play Robertson over Kerkez against Arsenal though.

I'm glad Robbo stayed (I assume he is) because Kerkez was always going to need time. I'm not really comfortable with pundits slating him given he's been thrown into the fire in a PL winning team, and is 21 years of age.

I'd agree Robbo should start against Arsenal.

I think any and all criticism of underperforming newcomers is fine, people are just saying what they see still with an acknowledgement that these things take time.

What's nonsense is the one comment from yesterday calling for players to be sold already. We had the same shìt directed towards Gravenberch after a month at the club. (and fabinho before that)

Ornstein has reported that James McConnell is heading to Ajax on loan.

Haha, two timely goals for Larsen tonight. Newcastle are going to have to pay Wolves a proper fee 😂

Exactly, but they don't have a leg to stand on when they have isak at 150M

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,195 ✭✭✭dogbert27

I think Newcastle have backed themselves in to a corner in any negotiations by insisting an outlandish fee for Isak and not budging on it.

There was talk that they didn't want to sell Isak first so that clubs wouldn't then try to fleece them but if they're insisting on 150 million anyway then other clubs will still fleece them by saying "well, we know you'll have 150 million to spend so our player is 60 mill, cough up".

What would go better for Newcastle in negotiations is that they valued at 150 and accepted 120 / 130. Then they could make arguments of paying below 60 million for Wissa.

By making a hard line on the sale of Isak they are setting an example for the likes of Brentford and Wolves to take hard lines with them.

There's a narrative going around still that Liverpool are the big bad bully here picking on poor Newcastle and upsetting their best player.

I have fxxk all sympathy for Newcastle and Eddie Howe. He wound his players up before the game to get at our players and be over physical. If the ref was stronger from the start there could have been 4 or 5 Newcastle players on yellow cards in the first 15 minutes. We're lucky to come away from the game without any serious injuries.

Deliberately going in to a game with a plan to be over physical to send a message about a fxxking transfer is small time mentality from Eddie Howe.

    ^^^ 100% about Eddie Howe.

Not half as good as he likes to think he is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,856 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Ah hes pretty fecking good tbf.

Think he's handled the transfer stuff fairly even handedly as well.

Tonali literally threw his shoulder out diving, ref gave him the free kick too!

He didn't dive. That evolved from a hospital pass from Jones to Gravenberch a minute earlier.

    jones-5133.png

Gravenberch got the ball away to Konate as he was being taken down by Guimaraes, the referee signaled to play on and Liverpool broke forward.

    jones-5137.png

Ekitike wriggled free of Tonali in the box and Wirtz exchanged passes with him as Guimaraes came steaming at them.

    ekitike-5147.png

Guimaraes kicked Ekitike from behind causing him to lose control of the ball. Instead of falling over Ekitike started to drop back and Tonali was there to hold his hand again.

    ekitike-5154.png

Ekitike wasn't into the hand holding malarky and rejected Tonali's advances, unfortunately Tonali's legs gave way at that moment in time.

    ekitike-5158.png

Guimaraes committed two bookable offenses in that 30 second sequence.

They fairly went over the top praising him on sky, Carragher (I think) in particular was saying he is far more important to Newcastle than Isak - was way over the top praise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,223 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Ekitike not called up for international duty so that's another week of training for him

I mean he scored 14 league goals last season, Liverpool and United have paid more for strikers from the Bundesliga with similar numbers.

Rumours (and nothing more) that Guehl is attracting suitors from the continent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,195 ✭✭✭dogbert27

    It's because he's English.

Talksport keep raving about him too and that he has to be the next England manager. 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,892 ✭✭✭the kelt

I feel a bit sorry for him, I think he's a decent manager, not to the extent the media hype him up but good nonetheless. I do feel for him in regards to the Isak stuff as the reality is he has to answer the questions but doesn't have the power. I reckon he'd love to get shot of Isak for the monies bejng quoted and reinvest but doesn't have the power to make that call.

Newcastle overall are a little bit amateur hour in how they're running things, not liverpools fault that it's being highlighted as such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,139 ✭✭✭Big Ears

In the current transfer market with inflated prices Isak being priced at €150 million is probably right.

If it was a club like Real who wanted him, they'd have come up with the money and this saga wouldn't have run on.

Liverpool wanted Isak, but only if a low ball offer was enough to get the job done, and considering the sums being talked about for a replacement a low ball offer was never going to be enough for Newcastle.

If Newcastle accepted €110 million for Isak, Wolves wouldn't have said, €40 million for Strand Larsen is fine........infact make it €35 million. They need him and it would always have been an inflated price for him.

As it looks now, Isak will probably end up having to stay and play another transfer window or two, as it doesn't look like any club is willing to match his valuation.

Never been fond of Howe, he's always just had that smarmy bullshtty politician vibe to me (not helped by having Tindall stood beside him). Found his responses to questions about the nature of the people who were hiring him pretty irritatingly smug too. He's done a decent job in fairness, but I can't see myself ever warming to the fella as a person.

Liverpool have already offered £110m that's about €125m.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,376 ✭✭✭brevity

Newcastle are really struggling to get a replacement which is not good news all round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,223 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Very funny to use Real Madrid as an example of a team that would just cough up the asking price, they're famously underhanded and sly in their dealings.

Bajcetic staying put for this season anyway. Hopefully he can recover from injury and get a few appearances before Christmas.
