6/6, lots of issues but who cares, it'll take a bit of time integrating so many new players and system. Oh my that finish from Rio is insane for a 16 year old in that atmosphere. A star is born lads

got out of jail tonight big time… very worried about the lack of aggression and we were not on the front foot.

Slightly worried that we have bought some of the wrong profile of players - 2 new full backs are very slight and Wirtz is the same….they have other attributes but the PL is very physical… Guehi is only 6.0 ft as well….. with small full backs and midfielders now we need taller CB's I think…. most teams will just try and do the same as Newcastle have done….

think we need to be a bit more physical and aggressive…. I like Bruno and Joelinton… (6.0 and 6.1ft) but they seem to put themselves about

Also worried about our squad depth at the moment….still think we need 2 more CB's and another forward. I think we need a back up player for the front 3 also for competition…. unless Rio is going to be thrown in … ranting a wee bit, but worried…. especially of the rugby tackle, pull and pushy Arsenal lads - we will need to do better….

Not quite a 4-3 from olden days but sweet all the same

Given we were missing Gravenbach last week and Mac this week I'm not surprised he's started both. When everyone is back he might start being rotated in a bit more.

I always found it a positive of Klopp the way he slowly introduced players but then you had supporters who wanted the new lads thrown straight in.

Did you see them against Utd? They were very lucky to come away with anything from that, let alone three points.

There is certainly work to be done, and Konate especially looks like a liability right now. But you also can't judge Arsenal based on a result at home against a very poor Leeds side.

So reading the last few pages we have been poor, we have bought a lame duck LB, Mo is done less than 4 months that most said we needed to pay him what he wanted. Add in we have just beaten a still quite good Bournemouth team and Newcastle that finished 5th last year at their stadium.

I think I will take on what some have posted and throw this season in the bin. We are obviously not going to get better this season and we need to sell Kerkez in January as 21 year olds never get better. Especially defenders where you are the finished article at 19, he is useless and time to let him go. As for Wirtz, he has not shown in the past 2 matches with a changed midfield in both games that he is worth £10m, never mind £110m, not sure what the fuss was.

Obviously take the above with a ton of salt. We are not guaranteed to win anything this year, but we have now shown we are able to win when the going gets tough. Imagine what we are going to be like when we start playing well? Sure Newcastle didn't "deserve" to lose, but what did they do to win the match? How many saves did Alisson have to make? Sure, we struggled against their tactics, but they were just throwing crap at the wall hoping something will stick. Another day we are a little more composed and we finish them off, but with the emotion of the match and the transfer window we have had it was always likely to be tough.

Basically, calm the feck down, we are in for a lot of rollercoaster matches this year and if you are going to be moaning about our 21 year old left back anytime he makes a mistake you are just going to be miserable quite a bit. We are not going to be boring this season, and thank goodness for that.

I think we put up with Moreno for way too long in Robbo's first season.

I was just going to mention the Utd game. Arsenal played poorly and won, same as ourselves tonight. Good teams find a way.

Same, loved that with Klopp. As fans we're excitable and want to see the new shiny thing asap - but Klopp was terrific for seeing exactly when someone was ready to start regularly. Ultimately no new player should be too harshly judged until at least the new year (and certainly not written off!). Think any criticism should always go to the manager for perhaps playing them before they're ready.

I will agree we were way too passive when 2-0 up in the second half and we let them back in, even with their agriculture tactics of lump it to the big man. But we were this way last season when up as well. Hopefully this was just this match with everything surrounding it that made it extra difficult. Sometimes playing against 10 is harder than 11 as the other team has a grudge about the red card and they lift themselves.

Very happy with the 3 points, I do hope we will get better and I am sure we will.

I wouldn't read too much into this game. I doubt we'll come up against the same intensity and directness again this season. We didn't play well but showed some real coolness to win the game when the opportunity presented itself.

Newcastle were brilliant, in terms of spirit and fight, just have to give them credit for it.

I don't care how petty or small it sounds, but watching the winner replay and all them home fans sitting down and shutting the fook up was absolutely delicious

    No apologies.

The most positive thing for me about our start to the the season is how much of an upgrade Ekitike is on Nunez. Nunez wouldn't have taken the chances Ekitike has so far.

I think people are being way too overly negative TBH. Yes we haven't been brilliant. But we haven't been as sh**e as been made out, if you were to listen to the likes of Carragher you'd think we're relegation fodder!

Ekitike looks like the real deal. And Grav looked sharp tonight. I'm not worried about Kerkez as we know what he can deliver, and a lot of his issues seems to be that he's too eager at times to impress.

My main takes concerns, I was never Konates biggest fan, but he's in dreadful form. I'm not even sure what we do here. But he'll continue to give up big chances and goals playing like that week in week out.

The Wirtz scenario, not having the aggression of Dom in the 10 role is killing us. Salahs pressing days are done, and Wirtz just gets physically dominated. So our right hand side of the pitch is like an open gate!

Dom has been our best player the last 2 games and we need his energy and legs in the 10 role. Against I'm not sure what we do with Wirtz. But playing him in the 10 behind a front 3 is just not going to work!

I'd like to see Dom at 10, Mac and Grav with Wirtz instead of Gakpo. He's played there and can move infield too. We need to try to get the best out of him and I wonder would that change allow him to find his feet a bit easier.

So MacAllister didn't miss the game because of the birth of his child, but had a slight injury concern. Hard to see him feature on Sunday.

After spending over £100 million on Wirtz, we can't abandon the plan to play him as a 10 so soon.

Szobozlai looks an 8 to me, not a 10. He doesn't have the guile for that. Maybe play Szobozlai wide right! Gakpo has been decent on the left.

Outside the ground tonight . Zoom in on sticker

I agree with a lot of the above but I do think we've been pretty terrible so far. I thought tonight against 10 man Newcastle for the majority of the game, with a 2 nil lead with Gordon, Joelinton and Tonali all going off injured or sent off (not to mention the Isak shaped hole up front) and we were still second best to everything for the vast majority of the game.

Only a moment of magic won us a game, we didn't really deserve to win let's be honest. I do think we having difficulty fitting in Wirtz in addition to the front 3 but I've faith it'll work out as I think/hope Wirtz is that good and just needs time to adjust. Hugo is a big upgrade on Nunez already from the 3 games I've seen him play for us. Szob has been immense as was VVD tonight. Rio looks special. Mo has been anonymous so far. I think the system needs a rethink. I'd love to know what Slott said to Wirtz that convinced him to join... It was hardly this.

It's mad considering the money we've spent but the squad is weaker than it was last season right now IMO. We need to sign Guehi and another attacker and let's give this season a real go. I still think arsenal are the team to beat so next week will be telling. Still can't complain about 2 from 2 while playing rubbish for most of it.

Ps what is going on with konate? He's been shockingly bad. Kerkez will come good I think he's trying too hard right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,889 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Our main issues at the minute, is were simply unable to control games. The 2 man midfield just does not work. Like for example tonight, on what planet was a midfield duo of Jones and Grav going to be able to impact that game?

But I'm not going to be too critical just yet, as we have yet to have all our midfielders available and this 2 man midfield is currently there to accommodate Wirtz. If in 6 weeks or that, nothing is clicking, the Slot will have to revisit the Wirtz situation.

I was one of the lads on here critical of the Wirtz transfer at the time, so I'm still obviously hoping I get proved wrong. But I simply didnt understand it at the time and it has yet to make sense to me.

Fantastic win tonight but I'm worried about the squad depth and think we need another forward.

Brilliant win last night and great start to the season!

Big week now in the transfer market. If we can land Isak and Guehi we’ll be in great shape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭DRedSky

Konate was toxic again and yet he’s still guaranteed to start the next game.

That is not a good situation for us to be in.

He’s also probably leaving next summer on a free and if he’s playing this poorly now I’d be worried how bad he’ll be closer to his (probable) move next summer.

Vital that we sign Guehi imo. Absolutely vital.

I am not worried about Kerkez. He was a brilliant signing and will be our LB for the next decade. He’s off to a slow start but sure some players just take time to settle in at a new club. Remember Fabinho for example.

Plus if your centre back is playing like Konate then it ain’t exactly helping you settle in, is it?

Great result last night anyway, even if the performance wasn’t so good.

Hopefully when Palace qualify for Europe on Thursday we have the agreement to sign Guehi set up.

I hope that is really what the delay is all about 🤞

Can't get enough of that winner. Love watching the Geordie fan reactions. Find a new, and even funnier one on every watch.

Just because we've bought a lightweight player for a lot of money, doesn't mean we have to double down and play him in every hostile PL away fixture. Hopefully last night will see Wirtz hit the gym now for remainder of season, does he have the determination and honesty of a Mo Salah to never be bullied like a likkle boy again? We shall see.

On Kerkez, I said at the time we signed him that I prefer the skill and composure of Ait Nouri at left back and I thought City bought the better player. I was accused of all sorts by other posters, including that I'm a troll on the wind up. Blinkered fandom is dull. Last night was honest and special.
