I've heard a ton of rumours but that's all they are, rumours.

My own guess is he stays in the NH but some rumours has him heading to NZ

Any thoughts on what people would like to see in the coming season?

Open question on how McMillan will set us up to play, but I think more generally we need to see improvements in the following:

    • Lineout. The single biggest issue we had last season. With Coddling coming in full time after the first few weeks, I'm confident we'll see an improvement here.
    • More clinical off set piece. We seemed to score more tries off expansive play than off set piece last season. Hopefully we can keep the expansiveness while adding more efficiency off set piece (which should be much more controllable). Goes hand in hand with lineout as well.
    • The injury list needs improving. Some of it is undoubtedly bad luck, but we've seemed beset with injuries at various times over the last number of seasons. Hopefully the injury list will improve with Mayo coming in.
    • More consistency in performance. We're capable of delivering performances like La Rochelle and Sharks away last season, but equally the Zebre and Edinburgh losses were terribly poor.
    • Nankivell needs to improve his discipline, it was costly vs Glasgow and he was lucky with some decisions too during the course of the season. Himself and Farrell look like a great partnership tho.
    • A home Champions Cup knock-out game should be a target that this group is well capable of delivering. I think last time we had a "home" game was the QF vs Toulouse in the Aviva in 21/22?

    From a personnel perspective:

    • Nash and Kilgallen looked really good together as starting wingers, with real pace. Would like to see that pairing retained.
    • Abrahams has that killer pace also, but I don't think he's as effective at FB than on the wing. Some of it was out of necessity, but hopefully we'll see him more on the wing this season.
    • FB will be an interesting one; Haley started the season well, but regressed as it went on and looked to have lost a little pace post-injury. It looks pretty open, and I think Daly could become our starting FB, with all the other wing options we have. I think it's a position that suits him.
    • Big season for Tom Ahern. Ended the season playing really well, so hopefully we can kick on further and push himself into the Ireland conversation. I think he has the ability.
    • Hopefully the likes of Edwin Edogbo and Salanoa can get an injury free run. Those 2 could make a massive difference to us in terms of power they can bring.
    • Coughlan also seems to be improving and I think he could put pressure on Patterson for the back-up 9 spot as the season goes on.

Really good assessment Aloooof, have to agree with pretty much all the points.

    Some points from me:

    • Rotation: we have become FAR too comfortable on putting out the exact same 23 (once fit) for every game. We need to start to rotate players in and out of games and pick the best players to suit the opposition. This builds experience / exposure and develops skill sets (Quinn / Gleeson etc need to start getting meaningful gametime).
    • Power game: from all the pictures / videos, players look in top nick which is positive, but we need more players to put up their hands for the power play - we have become too reliant on Coombes. EE, Salonoa, Ahern, Gleeson, Quinn etc all have the potential to play this game so here is hoping.
    • Consistency: I really like McMillans view of raising the floor i.e. Improve consistency and avoid the crap performances were we look amateur at best. This is a foundation to build from and ultimately raises the ceiling also. I have watched the 2 Munster Access videos out, and acknowledging they are PR, I really like what I see and hear from Mayo / McMillan.
    • Full Back: I dont see abrahams as a FB, he has serious gas, step, etc, but defence / fielding / positioning are a weakness. he is an ideal bench option to change a game up however and can cover the back 3 as needed. I agree that Daly may become our No.1 Fullback, however if Haley can return to form (seemed more confidence issues than anything) he will play a valuable role.
    • Front Row: linked to rotation - I really hope the young front rows on the books get meaningful gametime. They might struggle, but we need it for next season in particular.

Very excited for the season ahead. Praying for a bit of luck with injuries and to not have a crisis for a change. Like the early messaging from McMillan.

However, very disappointed no tight head has been sourced. Think it could scupper us. Jager is fine but very injury prone. Ryan is past it surely. He was a noticeable disimprovement on archer towards the end of last season. Salanoa has had a horrendous run and can't be relied upon. May 2023 was his last bit of rugby. Foxe is young. If we sign a tight head, then there is huge potential in the squad to kick on with the new coaching set up.

Conor Bartley is there in case Salanoa can’t get fit, and Kieran Ryan is there to take over from John Ryan.

Foxe and McSweeney both would be available if any more opportunities come up to play too.

I think adding another tighthead would be too risky, as Jager, Salanoa if both can stay fit are good enough and the other guys need game time to develop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

If we want to compete, the above won't do. Entirely plausible we go into an important game with no jager and salanoa. Even including salanoa in the conversation is nuts really with his recent history. Ryan was 2nd to archer over the last 6 months and the scrum struggled when he replaced him.

But we can live in hope that we get a run of fitness there. No coincidence we won the urc on Salanoas last squad involvement.

I think adding another tighthead would be too risky

I think it would be the exact opposite of risky tbh. If a good TH became available (and IRFU allow it), then he should be snapped up. Salanoa is perma-injured but Jager was fairly limited in his appearances too. I'd be surprised if we ever find ourselves in a position where Munster have too many THs.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

That's a big if for them to stay for and if a decent righthead became available you would be mad to not sign them. None of the guys really stand out so a signing would be well worth the expense. Imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,541 ✭✭✭✭phog

When they were available the IRFU blocked them, hopefully the last few years has shown how that affected Munster and they allow a signing next time.

I really don't like going down the route of importing tighthead props when we have seven already on the books:
Jager, Salanoa, J Ryan, K Ryan, Bartley, McSweeney, Foxe.

We really should be using any opportunity to give development game time to the younger guys, K Ryan, McSweeney and Foxe at least, and I think Bartley deserves a chance also.

There is also the possibility of moving Loughman over to tighthead.

The risk is you'd spend a load of money on a top quality tighthead from SA for example, then Rassie calls him in to hold tackle bags, gets injured, and we're back where we are anyway, except the younger guys would have missed out on an opportunity to play whatever valuable minutes were given to the imported player. And even if it worked out for a season or two, you'd be back to where we are after they leave.

Sooner or later Munster needs to be pro-active in developing front rows, and giving game time is needed, despite the concerns.

I would have been on the other side of the fence (i.e. we need to sign a proven THP ASAP), but I am starting to move to this way of thinking now. We need resilience and capacity in the position, signing would be a sticking plaster (albeit an important one with next season in mind). I am hopeful the youth can start coming through at pace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 26,541 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'd agree with a lot of this but I'd also like to think that when a head coach that's appointed by the IRFU requests permission to recruit in such a technical position that the IRFU would listen to him. In refusing are they putting the team in a vulnerable position?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,012 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Yeah would agree with this. We're talking about front 5 and front row not wing/back 3. Very different technically(and then some)

    Cant be treated the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,292 ✭✭✭50HX

THP is the one position we are really vulnerable in.

None of the 7 on the books really fill me with confidence for the season ahead. They'll do a job no doubt but come big game, big opposition repeatedly it could be become a real weak point for us.

A good quality NIQ playing 60mins in the top level games would allow the younger lads get exposure at a more gradual level.

It is quite possible that from a coaches viewpoint that none of the younger cohort are actually good enough.

It's not having a go at them just possibly a fact.

Tom Clarkson might not be a great example as he is obviously highly talented butvgo back & look at his game minutes in his first season post u20's.

Mediocre opposition (for leinster) & away from.home for the bulk of minutes that season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 304 ✭✭Paddy_Mag

Munster have had signings before and neglected to develop players in those positions( not just THP )

The long term solution needs to be taken here. Short term solutions won't fix long term problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,296 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

The long term solutions have already been taken; Munster's development is much improved, centres of excellence have been opened and the 40% from Central Contracts coming in next season will help in the long-term too.

All Provinces need to supplement from elsewhere. So in that context, it's not unreasonable to suggest Munster should be allowed sign an NIQ in their, imo, position of most need.

We have enough on the books for this season, but I think it's last chance saloon for Salanoa. If he can get an injury free run this season, I think we'll be fine, but that remains a massive if.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

TH is an attritional position. Players rarely go more than an hour in it. Munster need someone now in the position. And it wont stop foxe etc from getting minutes when they are ready.

It is entirely foreseeable that we go into a big game with Ryan and Foxe as our options and we will not be competitive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,296 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Agreed, and tbh it's to Stephen Archer's immense credit so late in his career that he stood up commendably in the last 2-3 seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,416 ✭✭✭letowski

I think at the same time, we need to see the likes of Foxe and McSweeney out there. They’ll turn 23 and 24 this season and have a good physical profiles. The likes of Scott Wilson and Thomas Clarkson had a good few pro games played at that age. There’ll be growing pains no doubt, but we need long term solutions this this problematic position.

Tickets for the PUC game were released this morning for MRSC members. Terraces are €33.25 each with stand tickets ranging from €49.85 to €72.60

Upon close inspection the seats seem to be selling well with the seats by the half way line on both sides and most of the ones closer to the pitch gone

Early days yet but it looks like the club could be in line for a financial boost - assuming the sales of tickets to other home games don't see a significant reduction of course

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭greenkiwi1

Season ticket holders were automatically allocated a seat on a like for like basis to their Thomond park seat so I believe most the sold out areas were the allotted tickets for the roughly 7000 MRSC members.

Be interesting to see how well this game sells at these prices. I was going to purchase an extra family pass but have been told not to bother - they will just go to a URC game at Musgrave…..

Probably will but to use clarkson as an example learning under slimani and furlong amd not being forced in has likely served him well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,438 ✭✭✭✭Eod100

Wasn't much notice. Email only came in 7 minutes before they went on sale. Would have been good to give advance notice last week.70e seems a bit steep but with the novelty they will probably sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,897 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

They did much the same for the last few PUC games... The premium seating is pricey but the terraces aren't bad value

I agree, I think it will sell out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭oppiuy

Anyone know if we will get an allocation for Bath away?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 13,227 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

There is always an allocation for away fans, but you're not guaranteed to get one from that allocation. Most fans usually just buy directly from the opposition clubs website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,066 ✭✭✭oppiuy

I see They have a General sale date but id expect it that one to be sold out. Ive reserved the hotel just in case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,897 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I'd expect it to be sold out but maybe closer to the time. In my limited experience English fans tend to buy their tickets closer to the date or just watch it on the telly
