Purchasing a new car question

Hi all, I'm about to purchase a second hand car from a private seller, I've insured the car in my name but the seller has to apply to replace the VRC so that we can transfer ownership. The car is also taxed in their name for a few more months. My question is, can I buy and drive the car in the meantime? Or do I have to be registered as the legal owner and therefore have to wait a few weeks?

How do you know they own or are the registered owner without seeing a VRC

The tax (disc) applies to the car, not the owner. Even if the disc had expired then, as a new owner, you would only be required to tax it from the first day of the month when you buy it.

As the previous poster has said, how do you know the guy selling the car is the registered owner? Is he claiming the dog ate the old VRC?

Do not hand over any money until you see a VRC with his name on it. And if/when he produces a VRC, verify that the VIN number on the car matches the one in the VRC.

Have you insured the car before you've bought it?

I’ve bought plenty of cars without a logbook and drove them immediately. Ask your insurance company

One of the first questions your insurance company asks you when seeking cover is "Are you the registered owner of the car?".

Why didn't the seller sort out the new log book before putting the car up for sale? Seems sloppy, lazy or isn't the actual registered owner of the car. I wouldn't pay for it and collect it until they have the logbook in their hand for you to sign as the new registered owner and they post it off to Shannon.

That's true but insurance companies don't have an issue with the delay of a few days between you buying the car and becoming the registered owner.

Oh I'm aware of that but its a daft question then.
