Furries are to videogame development what Hipsters are to good food:

Apparently it's made by a studio headed by one of the Argonaut guys that worked on Starfox.

Think I'll wait a bit to get Silksong, I've heard it will be full of bugs…

Was looking at the new interface that the ROG Ally will have, and so far, it looks like MS are doing an ok job with updating the interface for handhelds. I still expect it to be fairly clunky when it launches, but MS are always at their best when they're responding to a threat to Windows, and the Steam Deck is honestly the biggest threat to gaming on Windows that they've faced in years. I'd expect them to make it significantly better over the next few years, but to be honest, I just don't think it'll matter unless they get the performance of windows to better.

Aren't some games on the handhelds running better being emulated through linux than native? That's a chronic situation.

Konami got Platinum Games in to create a new updated version of Guy Savage! Guy Savage is back having been cut from the HD and Master Collection versions. Can also be played separately from the main menu once you've completed the game.

In advance of Silksong, I decided to give the first Hollow Knight one more try. I never got more than an hour or so into it before, mainly because I'd get lost and didn't really like the combat (especially flying enemies considering they can throw projectiles and your attack range is so short).

I've gotten further into it this time, and have started finally unlocking decent upgrades to help with both the map system and ranged combat. Still though, not sure I'll get too much further considering MGS Delta is out on Tuesday, and by the time I'm finished with it Silksong will be out, so I'll probably just focus on it instead. But at the very least I'm a bit more excited about Silksong now.

If it helps, I find it kind of overrated. It's about 10 hours too long. The first half of the game is amazing but at the halfway point the map is too big, the teleporters too far paced and you find yourself just moving between map points, fighting the odd boss and not really being challenged until the end.

The dlc is mostly great other than the final boss rush DLC which is one of the few times I gave up on a game challenge and they stupidly lock the canon ending behind it.

Hollow Knight is a very good game, but the hype and meme status of Silksong has definitely elevated the game’s rep and standing beyond the actual game itself. It falls short of top tier Metroidvania for me, but still a very good time and I’m liking what I’ve seen of Silksong.

Yeah played a bit more and I've ended up in one of those standard "F*ck you!" areas where the game just decides to throw a bunch of sh*t at you all at once because f*ck you! It's unnecessarily dark which means you can't see anything, enemies come out of the ground which means you can drop down into an area and before you can get your bearings you're being attacked by enemies who are literally just popping out of the ground, and even though I thankfully managed to find the bug with the map I also have no idea where I'm supposed to fast travel out of here from. Checking a walkthrough guide, it seems like I shouldn't have come to this area at all yet.

Also having done one very small "use your abilities to get through this area full of thorns" section, I'm sure the latter stages of the game will likely frustrate the hell out of me. I knew going into the game I wouldn't be attempting the Path of Pain stuff, but even then I'd say there'll be a good few bits in the game itself where stuff like this is unavoidable.

Will play a bit more tonight anyway, but roll on MGS Delta!

New Shinobi game is getting fantastic reviews, currently sitting on 90 on Opencritic with 100% recommended.

More importantly for me, the two or three sites I follow (bar Eurogamer which haven't reviewed yet), love it. Can't wait for my copy to arrive now.

Hoping it's good. Action game fans are eating good with this and ninja gaiden a few days ago.

I don't know if any of you played Still Wakes the Deep. If not, you should.

Didn't bother with the demo a while, but had a run through the opening level of the new Shinobi on Steam Deck. Looks good, wasn't a huge fan initially of the art style when it was first shown off, much the same way as their previous SOR4, but this gives off a much better initial vibe once in motion with some beautifully-crafted animation and backgrounds.

Early days, but it feels 'modern', yet doesn't look like it will over complicate things too much. Whether that's enough to sustain play all the way through will have to wait and see, but crucially, it feels comfortable to play.

Been making a good dent in my backlog recently - and currently that’s sent me in the direction of Isles of Sea and Sky from last year.

The short version is it’s a Sokoban-like block puzzle game mixed with classic Zelda style exploration. The single-screen puzzles are the meat, but every area has some pretty complex level-wide puzzles, plus a couple of substantial upgrades to aid exploration and open up more puzzles.

It’s not best in class Sokoban IMO - I’d recommend the likes of A Monster’s Expedition or the legendary Stephen’s Sausage Roll over it - but it’s a very clever and enjoyable game nonetheless that can easily eat up an hour or two with its layered secrets and puzzles. There is a bit of an uneven difficulty curve, not helped by a non-linear design that means you actually may not be able to immediately solve a puzzle you stumble across. But overall a successful and creative mix of genres, that does a fine job scratching a couple of different gaming comfort food itches.

Short GMTK video on it here:

Played MGS Delta up to the first meeting with Eva. The game is beautiful, and very much a re-skin of the original. Even placement of animals is the same as the original (I instinctively knew there'd be a snake in a particular patch of grass because it was always there in the original). There is definitely a disconnect between the style and design of the game, and the updated graphics. The game looks so great at points, yet the animations are so jarringly cartoonish by comparison that it really stands out.

The QOL improvements seem pretty great, particularly swapping camo. Very quick to pick a suitable set of camo, and a quick loading screen flashes across and you're in the new camo.

Goddamn I love The Boss though. Genuinely may be my favourite video game character of all time. And she looks utterly glorious in this game.

Just went through Sword of the Sea. Gorgeous, relaxing and very very short.

The opening areas are the strongest. Big and open, where movement feels its best. It really is a joy to traverse across sand and sea here. It’s definitely one of the best uses of the dispense controller too.

After that it settles into the Journey formula of travelling up a mountain with various stunning locales that don’t have any real impact on the game.

After just over 2 hours the credits rolled. Very enjoyable evening but would only really recommend if you have a PS+ subscription.

Think the journey formula of A>B doesn’t suit it that well. A more Shadow of the Colossus approach of having a barren land to explore, with big areas to traverse through would have suited it better imo.

Literally exact same for me too.

Started it back up last week. Enjoying it a lot more than the last time I gave it a go. I still think it's a bit overhyped.

Waiting for a few patches before jumping into MGS Delta. Performance looks a bit rough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,674 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Performance on Delta felt fine for the most part for me, but could get framey during some cutscenes (some you'd kinda expect such as Snake parachuting in through loads of foliage, but others like Zero & Para-Medic on the plane too for some reason). Was looking in the options to see whether it was on Performance or Quality mode but couldn't find the setting. Turns out the setting isn't available when playing on PS5 Pro as it's trying to achieve both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,757 ✭✭✭Corvo

I had not researched Delta a lot but what stopped me picking it up at full price was exactly what you said - no change to mechanics. I doubt it has aged well in that regard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,674 ✭✭✭✭Penn

It's definitely a re-skin of a 20-year old game, but there was very little they could do to change the mechanics in a way that wouldn't entirely change the game. Even the small changes they have made (better 3rd-person shooting, easier CQC, full camera control) have a big enough impact on the ease of the game in places.

There is a bit of a dissonance between what the game looks like and how the game plays, but mechanically, it's still a fantastic game that has aged very well.

@Penn what platform are you playing it on? I can't decide whether to buy for PS5 or PC. I usually prefer games like this on PS5 but the performance story seems terrible, I think I'd get a better experience on my PC.

Anyway, it is 100% a re-skin. They reused all the original motion capture data, so the movement and cutscenes etc are absolutely identical.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,674 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Playing on PS5 Pro, which seems to actually be the worst way to play it as you can't choose between Performance or Quality (since it's trying to achieve both). I think the base PS5 is supposed to be better. That said, aside from some cutscenes I haven't found it to be too bad at all.

Haven't read too much into what platforms have what issues with it, so can't really comment on anything regarding PC performance.

Its one I'll keep an eye on but just can't justify the price at the moment. Honestly with my backlog, I'm gonna end up picking it up for 30 quid in 2 years I reckon

    2D/2.5D art style

I don't like the art style/motion on that new Shinobi game. The characters look too flat and lack weight. That recent Ghosts n Goblins remake also looked the same to me. Same with Hollow Knight and Silksong ...I don't know what the technical/artistic term is for that. It's supposed to have excellent gameplay so I'll pick it up when it's discounted.

As a contrast ... Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Prince of Persia, The Lost Crown, Metroid Dread, the upcoming Terminator game ... look really good to me, and the character animation and motion has impact and weight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,770 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

If you have PS+, give The Rogue Prince of Persia a go. Its also 2.5D, but what it does better than Shinobi is the size of the outlines. They're bigger in Shinobi, and makes everything stand out on its own. Whereas in RPoP everything blends better together due to smaller lines, giving it a more cohesive feel. But it is basically Prince of Dead Cells, so bound to feel good!

Played a bit of Shinobi there. Hard to tell if it's better than Ninja Gaiden yet. There's a bit too much talking and while the enemies take a few hits the combo system is fast and great fun. It doesn't feel like old Shinobi but both it and ninja gaiden nail the game feel. Can't choose between them.

Watching Francis Higgins (Viper) playing it today now and have to admit……it's starting to tempt me back

Taking one for the team here.

Took out the 3DS and started Kid Icarus Uprising.

You can all thank me when a remake gets announced in the next few weeks.
