My money's on them bailing Chelsea out once again and buying Jackson.

The cynic in me says this is a bit of PR too, completely damage his character so he has to be sold and there isn't any backlash from fans towards the club. Lets be honest they have had an absolutely **** window and with all the oil riches of Saudi Arabia and their "ambition" its not a good look. Important thing to remember is never believe a word any party says, they will lie through their teeth without blinking to get what they want

Nah they'll just buy Mudryk off Chelsea or something equally as dodgy

So does that mean he would have to invoke it now when the transfer window closes for him to be able to leave the club at the end of the season? Or could he invoke it next may Let's say to be able to leave next summer?

And if it is the first one what happens if he were to have a long term injury in the mean time meaning he would miss most of next season and no club wanted to sign him, would Newcastle still be obliged to fulfill his contract despite him invoking article 17 on them?

Definitely. I would have expected them to bid for him anyway before the Havertz injury. I think they've wanted him a long time

Before the last league game of the season AFAIK.

They also found Webster guilty of breaking his contract "without just cause", although only on a technicality; he and his agent were late informing the club of his intention to leave, because of confusion over the final match of the season (Hearts had reached the 2006 Scottish Cup Final, but the time limit was calculated from the club's last league game, four days prior to the Cup match). For this he was suspended for the first two weeks of the 2007–08 season.

    Wow!

And does the "protected" period only apply to the first contract a player signs for that club or does it renew if the player renews his contract?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,215 ✭✭✭giveitholly

They can't afford him,and if they wanted him a long time then they wouldn't have gone for Gykores

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,231 ✭✭✭Talisman

Article 17 has to be invoked within 15 days of the final game of the season.

A professional may only terminate his contract on this basis in the 15 days following the last official match of the season of the club with which he is registered.

The Premier League finishes on May 24th 2026, the Champion's League Final takes place on May 30th so Isak would have to invoke the clause by June 7th or 14th depending on when Newcastle's season ends.

It applies per contract, if he were to sign a new contract then it would be another 3 seasons (2 if he is 28 or older) before he could force the break.

Arsenal look like they're getting Eze so wouldn't worry about any Isak interest.

Very good move for them, a lot more worried about them now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,215 ✭✭✭giveitholly

They never had any interest in Isak and were never going to get him anyway

Christ the Spurs thread really does make for foot in mouth reading.

Arsenal quietly doing very good business this window. Zubi and eze are top players I think the havertz injury forced their hand and they jumped on eze last minute from spurs. A very settled team with 2 big players coming in is ominous.

They might actually do it this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,215 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Well with the amount of money they have spent they would want to do something this season,no excuses.

They can only field 11 players, the same as the rest of us but they do look like they have a lot of strength for every position. Will it make much difference though if they are to continue to play Arteta's brand of start-stop bullyball?

Trent not starting off well in his first La Liga game. Taken off after 68 minutes failing to win a tackle or a duel, lost the ball 15 times and got nutmegged.

His forward play was good as usual with 49 out of 52 passes made and some good crosses in to the box but no one there for them. Probably hasn't built that understanding yet with the strikers.

Without Bellingham in the team until about mid-October it could be a tough time for him.

They’d want to seriously improve from their performance on Sunday.

I just can’t see them winning the league with the manager they have.

They have been quietly doing the business for the past 5 years though, but people are only really starting to look at their spending now and their trophies in that time. If Arteta does not win a trophy this season he should be gone. People were going on about our spending this summer, yet with the Eze deal they are only 50m behind us in gross spend and they have a relatively settled squad. Taking into account net spend they have spent almost 2.5 times what we have this summer.

Since 2020 they have a gross spend of just over 1 billion euro and a net spend of around 840 euro. In that time our gross spend is 840m euro and net 418m euro. Sure our squad was more settled but it just shows how much Arteta has had to spend and his outlay in trophies is 0 since he won the FA Cup without spending anything and the squad he inherited.

Still funny to see a club's fans have a meltdown over a transfer, especially when its not your own.

Arsenal do seem to have built a more impressive squad but they haven't had any significant sales either.

As machiavellianme said they can only play 11 players but they have built a good squad.

I think there usual formation is a 4-3-3

    GK - Raya / Kepa / Hein

    RB - White / Timber

    CB - Gabriel / Saliba / Mosquera / Kiwior

    LB - Calafiori / Lewis-Skelly / Zinchenko

    RM - Odegaard / Nwaneri

    CM - Zubemendi / Norgaard / Lokonga / Viera

    LM - Rice / Merino

    RW - Saka / Madueke / Nelson

    CF - Gykores / Havertz / Jesus / Trossard

    LW - Eze / Martinelli

I think Arteta's challenge this year will be to keep them all happy with game time. If they get Eze over the line Martinelli will definitely be dropped from the first team.

Jesus and Zinchenko must be on good contracts as they're not looking to leave but I can't see them getting much game time this season.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to sell Havertz this summer too as he missed some awful chances last year and is always picking up injuries.

Trossard might also start getting impatient as Gykores will start nearly every game now.

Looking forward already to the game at Anfield Sunday week. Will be a big marker for either team if they get the win.

It depends how they do at the start. If they start well and theres a chance they could win the league then the players will mostly row in. Of they're any way off the pace then tou might have a problem.

Havertz seems to be artetas favourite presser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,568 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Definitely more worried about Arsenal now. Martinelli was the weak link in their team imo, he’s fine to be an impact sub for the last 20 minutes, but not at the level of the likes of a Gakpo or Diaz. Eze fixes that.

Divock Origi having his contract terminated at Milan this morning, who needs Isak just bring him back! 😆

Or tell newcastle we will put a good word in with him while we buy Isak :P

There is nothing quiet about Arsenal's spending.

Their business is great. But with that HAS to now come an expectation that they actually win something. Arteta has been backed incredibly for a long time now, and he hasn't even had to sell this summer.

Slot is being backed too this summer, don't get me wrong. But the pressure is on them. If they can't do it this year with that squad, as talented and settled as the core of it is, with the additions they've made again, then they may genuinely never do it.

Salah and VVD mentioning at the awards how we're down forward players, and aren't as strong as last year. They know it too.

As an Arsenal fan I agree with all this. We do need to sell those 4 or 5 periphery players but that doesnt affect the title challenge.

I see Pool very marginal favourites still but almost nothing in it. It really appears to be a genuine 3 horse race.

I'd have Liverpool's first 11 slightly better than Arsenals but Arsenal's squad as a whole a fair bit better than Liverpool's at the minute with more and better options off the bench to win/close out a game.

The big thing is that Liverpool have experience winning the big trophies in the last few years whereas Arsenal don't. It'll be an interesting season but Arsenal would be favourites at the moment for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭McFly85

Arsenals players aren’t the problem, the system they play is. They are capable of great play in patches but they don’t create many chances and prioritise minimising risk.

In a way they remind me of England under Southgate. An abundance of talent at his disposal that is totally underused - enough to get through most games but the tactics will end up causing them to lose out.

They were poor against United, the only difference between a win and a draw there was Raya having a good game, other teams will be less forgiving.

They have an unbelievable squad though. If a more proactive manager given the job I would say they’re heavy favourites. As it is they will be in with a shout but I still think they’ll finish around the 80 point mark which might not be enough.

Has there ever been a player like him? Seems to be absolutely abysmal everywhere he goes EXCEPT for 1 club where he scores vital goals, wins trophies and is a cult hero.
