I agree with this point. Hugo looks very promising but I couldn't help but notice the stat which he shared with Darwin (goal and assist on his debut) and that wasn't exactly a resounding success in the end.

Isak and Guehi coming in before the end of the window would be great business imo. Buying Isak without a CB would be kind of insane at this point.

Apologies if posted already but nice to see Diaz off the mark for Bayern already in their cup game.

Celebration paid tribute to Jota as well.

Both Darwin and Ekitike scored a goal and had an assist in the first PL game of the season after both also scored in the community shield

How i look at it is:

To win the league we need to flat track bully the bottom 15 teams and hold our own against the other 4.

To win the CL we have to beat Real/PSG/Atletico/Barca.

Do we have the players for those? Obviously there's no way to know but it looks like we definitely need players to do the latter and probably need players to do the former.

If we had to muddle through this season with what we've got then it looks like our 1st team could have a proper go at the league but injuries and AFCON will eventually end that.

I don't think this squad would beat a series of those European teams.

Therefore we need to improve in a number of positions.

Doak has completed his move to Bournemouth for £25m.

To put it another way, we are league Champions and for the first time in a long time we are able to sign the best players from other top sides in the league. We aren't restricted to up-and-coming players, we can buy the proven quality.

We should be taking advantage of our current status to build a side that can sustain success. Winning the league this year is likely to be harder than it was last year IMHO, though obviously I could be totally wrong since it's only week 1. We haven't won back-to-back leagues since the early 80s.

When we won it under Klopp, it felt like a great achievement winning it over City. It feels like now we're at a point where we could establish our own period of dominance if the squad is managed right, and the standard becomes clubs have to win the league over us.

Come January, I'd rather be sitting here with both Isak and Ekitike saying how Ekitike has been way better than expected and has been a great foil for Isak, than sitting here thinking if only we had someone who could have taken the pressure off Ekitike when he was struggling.

Same goes for a centre back.

If the money is there then get the players in now rather than wait. This transfer window could set the tone for the club for the next 4 or 5 years.

Banned from every stadium, can't even go within a mile of a stadium.

Not nice for a season ticket holder. Taught him a lesson for sure

"Muddle through the season" is a bit myopic. We've brought in 300m worth of talent! We may be short of ideal in a few positions, but its a world away from muddling through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,823 ✭✭✭atilladehun

Yeah, i get ya but if we end up with a few key injuries on those players because we haven't got the depth and not properly competing for the PL and CL then we will be muddling through.

How long do we give this Isak situation before shelving it for now? Less than 2 weeks till the window closes we need maybe 2 forwards and Newcastle can't even get a back up striker in.

Depending on Hugo does, we might never come back for Isak after this window.

I think the Isak situation will move fast after the Newcastle fixture. I suspect the club know what it will take to shake him loose, but also know that Newcastle won't play ball before we play them.

I still feel fairly confident that deal will be done.

Newcastle were never going to sell him until after we play them this weekend.

I still think it's more likely than not he's a Liverpool player by deadline day.

  • Administrators Posts: 56,316 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

If I put my wishful thinking hat on I am thinking that the club know Isak is pretty much in the bag but won't be done until next week, and so attention has turned to getting a CB.

Hopefully we hear some rumblings of us and a CB this week.

But this could just be blind optimism.

They can't get a replacement for Wilson never mind Isak, I also think we will not pay the rumored asking price of £150m.

Isak can say what he wants, he will reintegrate and play for Newcastle once the window closes. Newcastle are in a very strong position despite his antics to force a transfer.

They effectively will write off their season if they sell without any replacement. I always thought the success of the transfer depended on who they could get in.

    Agree with this.

Ive always been surprised at some of the podcasts and forums who seemed to feel Isak throwing a strop was irreversible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,458 ✭✭✭jones

I don't think it's irreversible but it's fairly close to it. He's refused to play or even train I don't see how he goes back to the team now. Every other example I've heard never went that far even if they were having big disagreements with senior management.

I want Isak but not for 150mil I'm guessing around 130 does it

I've said it over and over there is always a way back, professional players are simple creatures. It's also a world cup year so their position is even stronger. When the window shuts it'll be like nothing happened.

I'm all for being tight-fisted, but if we lose Guehi to Spurs I'll be pretty pissed off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,204 ✭✭✭Enzokk

Do you think we are entitled to sign anyone we are linked with, regardless of the player's wishes? - Surely if we do lose out and the player wanted to stay in London it is not the club's fault, however if it is because we do not want to spend the money then you may have a point.

All the noise is that he wants Liverpool or no one, so it will just be the money if we don't get it over the line

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,204 ✭✭✭Enzokk

In which case the post above mine stating we will lose him to Spurs is off the mark? Doesn't matter, I am sure the club is working to get the solutions they think we need within the constraints we have at the club, no use getting upset about it, in my opinion. 🙂

Newcastle putting in a fresh bid for Wissa according to the BBC.

Four days have passed without a signing....this club is a joke...#FSG-Out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,985 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if he went to Spurs

I'm the same as you though, I trust the club and won't be getting worked up either way, I'm too old for that these days 🤣

Hopefully we do get him though, if we were to land him and Isak them this could be an era defining transfer window

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,860 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I could see Spurs offer more cash but difficult to see the player wanting to go there over us.

Club could force it I guess but he could also say, fine ill go to Anfield on a free next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,924 ✭✭✭mormank

It's not an odd example to pick. He picked it cos it helped support his terrible argument. I believe it's called arguing in bad faith or something like that. It's ramapant these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,924 ✭✭✭mormank

Iirc Mascherano refused to play for us before his move to barca and Coutino faked a back injury to not play for us before his move to Barca.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,924 ✭✭✭mormank

I feel like if Guehi is willing to move to Spurs then he wasn't the right player for us in the first place tbh.

I don't know. Was there a way back for Sancho or Rashford at Utd? Or Sakho with Klopp? I think there can be a line to be crossed, whether it's with a manager's ego or the fans' tolerance, and people aren't willing to walk it back.
