The purpose/benefit/need of non return valve on output side of positive head shower pump

need to replace a shower pump in my sons house and when buying the new pump, a plumber, who was also buying some gear recommended a non return valve on the hot and cold from the pump to shower.
they do not seem to be fitted on existing and looks like a bit of work to do so now.
looks like hot is on RHS
