Drop Link Rubber Cracking

    Hi,

I just brought my car back from a service in a Peugeot main dealer, and I was told that the passenger side drop link rubber is cracking and needs to be replaced soon. I was quoted around 140 Euros for the fix, which I think is very high. How much does this job usually costs in normal Dublin garages? My car is a peugeot 3008, year 2013.

Also can this lead to an NCT failure if not replaced before the test?

    Thank you!

If by "drop link rubber" you mean the rubber boot or gaiter on the drop link, then yes, this will cause an NCT fail if it's cracked/damaged.

Thank you! One of the reasons why the Peugeot dealer said it will cost around 140 Euros is because they said the job would take about an hour. Is this really true? Appears to be a straightforward change.

If it's a main dealer you've got the quote from, they'll always be expensive. it's not a complicated job so if you know of a local mechanic, it would be worth asking them for a quote instead.

Edit: older cars can be a pain to work on. Rust and/or seized bolts can easily turn a 15 minute job into an hour or more. The Peugeot dealer may have factored this into the quote.

I just happened to do my drop links at the weekend (2010 Qashqai). Was doing brake pads also so wheels etc were off, but it took me about an hour. Not a mechanic, just an eegit with access to a lift. Was 40 quid for the set of droplinks.

Whats Peugeots labour rate? Must be over €100 per hour?

It depends on the garage. The one I go to is 90+VAT, and seems to be on the low side compared to the other Peugeot garages.

So is your total price 140+vat parts and labour?

Jesus €140 is very expensive, you'd get a good quality droplink for €15 quid and fitting takes about 3 minutes once wheel is off, I replaced mine periodically just because they're a cheap part and can create an awful racket when they go bad

Good ones are about 50 quid each, if you replace with trw or lemforder then you will easily get 200,000km out of a set

The cheapo ones don't last at all

Any particular brands you’d recommend for Mk3 Octavia?

you mention TRW. There are TRW ones on Autodoc for €15. would you know if these particular ones are likely to be good?

there’s also the option of Lemforder for around €30

I find Febi decent enough and they're cheaper, I dont know if Lemforder are still any good, I watch a YT channel called M539 restorations, German lad that rebuilds old high performance BMWs,in one of his videos he said a friend warned him about Lemforder declining quality, he opened up a brand new ball joint boot and there was a pea sized amount of grease, most of the joint dry, and it was a made in Germany part. Likewise I've had Lemforder control arms installed for a couple years and ball joints are gone.

    Trw would be just fine

@BlakeS94 trw and lemforder are the OEM supplier to BMW Mercedes and VAG so generally they would be the best aftermarket quality you can get.

Febi can be a mixed bag with what you get, definitely better than starline but in my experience with the above 2 they are definitely the longest lasting suspension parts.

Manufacturers are always looking for ways to shitify their products though in the name of saving a few pence however a small amount of grease is not cause for concern, less is often more when it comes to grease.

Just need to watch out as I said in another thread fake parts are all over the place branded as lemforder, trw, Bosch in particular so stick to the big name suppliers when ordering and avoid Amazon and eBay
