BBC seems to have confirmed it: https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cev28rvzlv1t

Trump will be able to spin it as everyone coming to see him, but at least Zelensky won't be ambushed again.

I did read that headline yesterday about them being invited. Sky are also confirming an invite from the WH

Trump will find it difficult to say no to a fact based approach which will be put forwards by several powerful leaders. He's going to find himself in a deep hole soon as he tries to keep promises to both sides

He won't. I think he'll just say whatever and flipflop as it suits him.

Nothing about Trumps reaction to the meeting on Friday suggests that this is the case. Nothing.

Maybe you didn't see any of the reports that came out of the event or the interview with his buddy Hannity afterwards. No?

I'm glad Zelenskyy will have significant back up this time. Trump ambushing him last time was tough to watch.

Would love Macron to ask Trump in front of reporters where the Epstein files are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,580 ✭✭✭spakman

Why on earth would Macron bring up Epstein files? It has nothing to do with Ukraine, France or Europe.

Most such deployments the past couple of decades have been of individual volunteers, particularly those who don't happen to have a civilian job of the time. Rarely is corps (Branch or MOS, we call it) considered as a factor unless there is a specific task being undertaken which requires it (eg mechanics fixing border patrol vehicles).

As an aside, his taking control of DC and 'cleaning it up' was a campaign talking point before the election.

Well he said there would be repercussions for Russia if they didn't agree a ceasefire, they haven't and Trump is praising Putin's insights into American elections. This is only the latest in a long line of clear indications of where the U.S. President sees this going.

You may not be able to read between the lines but others certainly can. Ukraine is screwed if it's relying on Trump or the American public for that matter.

considering that Trump Pulled Out ALL THE STOPS for Putin’s visit it will be very interesting to see the choreography, sequence of actions, press conference, ( who will be allowed to ‘speak first’ , Trumps response, presence of carpets and while taking the cultures of the various nations into consideration re diplomatic niceties.
SO, stock up on the popcorn

PS , I wonder who will the collision of the willing chose to do ‘most of the talking’

PPS will the same line up pertain - either before or after the meeting with DT and VZ sitting in ‘big’ chairs within hand shaking/ finger wagging distance and both flanked with their advisors . Or will they skip that variety / ego building/ power show?

I was thinking, aside from the intermix of Civil Police and Military not always been to the better, that using MP's would be better than Inf on foot patrols in an urban setting (if needed). Comms and mindset would be another thing, as the sets & radio-speak could be different. Actual provable shifts in crime pattern results would be nice as the crime rate in DC has reportedly fallen by 30% over last year.,, no mention made of it accelerating since Jan this year, apart from one specific reported crime incident which attracted a lot of attention.

On the aside, it would be a pity if his efforts to clean up Washington were solely reached by utilizing the N/G in support of the civil sanitation engineers clearing away tent city, purely giving the city a manicure. I can almost hear the "here we go again" mutterings in certain quarters, "THEY want **** cleared up but don't want to pay the bill".

The locations where the former Washington tent city residents were moved to in order to achieve his urban regeneration desires doesn't seem to be clear yet. Edit: Gentrification was the word I wanted, not urban renewal, but as Trump is big into property deals, both would do.

It was quite obvious from the two handshakes televised, who's hand was dominant and that was before the meeting started.

On the plus side the American public do now not need to read between the lines to see their president is a lying piece of shlt and Puti`s puppet.

Given the chance, he'll veer off into a soliloquy about windmills and the strength of toilet flushes and forget Zelensky is even in the room. At least with the extra leaders there, they can attempt to keep him on topic.

Putin must have the Epstein files or something even worse on Trump.

Ref the big meeting, I'm waiting to see if some issue of protocol is raised by the White House over the Zelenskyy & European Rep Group meeting with Trump to see if HE wants Zelenskyy (as a head of state to head of state) split off from the European group with the W/H saying there would have to be separate meetings leaving Zelenskyy open to ambush No 2. If Trump has his W/H team insist on separate meeting, I would like Zelenskyy to walk out with his fellow Europeans and leave Washington immediately by air, denying Trump any opportunity to lie to the media about Zelenskyy being the disruptor of peace.

If you are going to start from the premise that Trump deploying troops to clear the streets of the homeless is acceptable then you would be setting a very low bar would you not ?

Using troops answerable to one individual to forcible move people to camps has been the thin edge of the wedge in the past and hasn`t a great history. If it has to be done then why not have the civil authorities do it.

the more European countries that could attend in DC the better. The image of large and small countries there behind Zelenskyy would be powerful. Ultimately it might make no difference, but still this is close to a key fork in the road and I think I know the one I would be taking. (personally I think VdL is a twit and the President of the Council should be there (Costa) not her).

There will be a special chapter in the history books for Trump ….

I’d guess that by the time he goes and is possibly succeeded by Vance, the history books in American schools will have been reprinted to paint him in glorious terms.

Trump has brought the N/G in on the basis of DC suffering a breakdown in law and order. Since the operation began, the tent-city people have been moved on to accommodation elsewhere with JCB's destroying the tents and forms of accommodation the tent city residents have been using.

I would suggest it is not I, but Trump, who has set the unacceptable low bar. It would not take a genius to work out that Trump would seize any opportunity to promote his agenda regardless of where the tent city is located.

I totally agree on the "there will be a special chapter in the history books for Trump comment. I would prefer that he not be the winner being covered by a ghost-writer.

    1) attack the press because they won't bend the knee

    2) claim it was Biden's war - don't criticize Putin

He has said multiple times that this war wouldn't have happened if he was president. That's true, but not because Putin feared Trump.

It's because Trump would have opened the door for him..

Putin and Russia are there for the taking if the will was there from the US. Tighten Oil sanctions and more materiel for the Ukrainians would see the Russian effort slowly grind to a halt. Trump is keeping him in the game. A blunt united message needs to be delivered from as much of the rest of the world as possible.

I can’t begin imagine what the ‘ traditional’ US military and intelligence community think of the strategic genius the current POTUS is … peacemaker and deal broker and all ….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,621 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

I didn`t suggest that it was you that set the low bar, but then I don`t think that the idea of using the military police to clear the streets of the homeless is any more acceptable than using any branch of the military or the taking control of the police department to do it. Especially when Trump ust lied about the reason for doing so.

To answer your question, which I see another poster you asked did not, not only had violent crime dropped in 2024 from 2023, this year from 1st January to 11 August compared to the same period for 2024 it has dropped a further 26%.

Not the worst idea, though the reality is that the overlap between field MPs and other troops is relatively small. They get a bit more training with tasers and the like. Garrison MPs and CID are closer to civilian police, but the Guard doesn’t really have much of that. They are commonly tagged for such duties though because of the word “police” in the job description, and the fact they they are more likely to be certified on pistols than most.

Regular units do have a smattering of police in them, though. My brigade commander is a cop in civilian life, as is my commo NCO and several of my Cav scouts. We usually have an SME or two in such things in any sizeable group.

Not defending the Trump administration in any way, but we did have JCBs clearing homeless people's tents in Dublin. Being homeless sucks enough without some fucker destroying all your stuff because the sight of you made some suits feel a tinge of guilt.
