I know a lot of the talk here is about the pennies and the pounds, but is the other major issue the fact that very little content is being created? There hasn’t been a post in AH in an hour. This used to be a forum that would have multiple posts per minute. Even the trolls and WUMs no longer bother. I hate to be negative; but it looks like the site is in a death spiral.

There's several markup shortcuts you can use.

Single asterisk or underscore before and after text will italicize your text.

double asterisk or underscore before and after text will bold your text.

A single hash symbol before text will make it a level 1 header, similar to h1 in html, thus using two hash symbols will make it a level 2 header like h2 etc

a shevron / greater than symbol before text will make it a block quote.

there is more but hard to show when they get rendered without been able to escape like you're supposed to be able to with back slashes.

As for the pac smiley, all boards have smiley/emoji management, adding pac back is relatively easy.

Yep, that's the biggest issue. The home page shows the most recent 50 threads with an update. During the day this would traditionally have been posts from the past minute or two, now it goes back 45 minutes.

Unless that element is addressed (i.e. attracting new users, or getting old users back) then subscribing is just a sticking plaster…

My biggest concern is the platform is being kept alive by a single random company in Canada. If they up their charges or even shut shop, the vanilla platform no longer receives updates of any kind even if they migrate it to another host.

Why is development still being done, when there isn't a pot to p*** in 🙄

I’ll admit I haven’t been a regular user here in over 10 years. Sort of just stopped. Think I got a warning or a card for insulting a poster who was against the marriage equality referendum. Logged out and that was that.

I mentioned to my husband that the site was going to close, and he didn’t even know. And this lad used to an admin here back in the day.

Desperate times and desperate measures but why don’t they just unban everyone and send an email saying please come back and here is how you can reset your password? I don’t think there’s any GDPR implications or anything there. More posters and readers will mean more subscribers.

Arguing about moderation and ads isn’t going to solve the poster problem. Most moderators are only trying to chip in and contribute to a site they like. There was always some rotten moderation here. It comes with the volunteer model.

Yeh, I'm aware there were problems.
But how come so many 'left' over it.
They were never problems I could see that left the site 'unusable'.

Folk being a tad over excitable maybe.

Couple of irks I can remember…

Think a big one was loss of all the threads/forums you were subscribed to, that had some cack handed workaround and eventually fixed later

And another was email notification of every post or nothing, never used it myself but guess some people liked a summary of new threads in forums they were subscribed to (no idea if that is fixed)

You just need to read the first few pages here if you want to remember just how bad "vanilla" Vanilla was…

Good post, a point you made illustrates something that's a problem.

If the site is in such grave danger, if there's only X amount of days left then why are the attempts to get the word out so lacking? We can debate all we like about moderation or ads or whatever, but it's not much good without a bit more of an effort to get the word out.

Where's the engagement? People, who might otherwise subscribe, are in the dark. Where's the email campaign? Where's any meaningful engagement with any media organisation of any description? There hasn't even been any engagement on this thread for, what, over a week now? Even the odd post here from Odhran would probably help bump up the subs: people appreciate transparency, even if it's not good news.

We're all on the outside, of course, and, yeah, resources are tight, but this rescue campaign is feeling less and less credible.

I was under the impression any changes being made now are to cut costs (back to old vanilla) or raise subs (payment processing, keepboardsalive.com, ads to push to sub, banners etc). Is there something else you're referring to?

vBulletin was so far from perfect though, and so often maligned, I really did and do think that the hate towards Vanilla forms was overblown.

From my experience (I’ve had a previous account here since 2001) Vanilla brought some new issues, sure, but none of them detrimental to participation - and it did also bring some sanity and stability to the mess that became of the hacked upon and outdated vBulletin system.

I think a problem is that to some people, users, mods, and Admins alike, “boards.ie” is a single large entity, one large community, whereas I think it actually works better if thought of as a collection of smaller communities.

People complain about over moderation “on boards.ie” due to whatever might happen on CA or After Hours or wherever, and the consequences can ripple throughout the site. I don’t read those forums, I actively avoid them. The forums (or forum, more accurately these days) I do participate in doesn’t have those problems at all.

But the structure of the site, with the homepage etc, and the mentality of the loudest users on it doesn’t lend itself well enough to filtering out the noise and focusing on the communities you care about. It stopped me from even trying, these days I’ve got a bookmark going straight to the forum I enjoy and try not to ever venture to the homepage, and I’m sure it’s driven others away entirely.

Bit late for all that now though I guess.

Never had to visit that thread as it never got that bad for me.

I understood there'd be glitches, there were a few I noticed, but never got in the way of using the site or making it un-useable.. Nor with vBulletin.
    Hence my original point.

No, it's not fixed. It used to be one notification for new activity on a thread since you last looked at it, which was great. Now if you bookmark anything you get a notification for every single post.

(to the tune of Guantanamera …)

Vanilla format. I hate the Vanilla format.

Vanilla format, I wish they would not be use that.

I liked the Boards back in oh-two,

It was so easy to run through,

Vanilla format, they should not have messed around with that.

Thanks! How do I set it to do what it used to do, though? I used to get an email if there were new posts on a thread I followed. Then when I went to the thread there might be one post or 20 posts for example. Now, if there are 20 posts there will be 20 emails. I'm not sure which settings I need to change for that particular issue?

@M.T. Cranium I'm happy to see you in this thread. I read your weather posts every day. I'm trying to remain hopeful but if boards goes down, I hope we'll be able to find you on an alternative / replacement forum? I believe you're on facebook but I'd never be willing to use it.

You have notification and/or email abled to be turned on and off. It would be hard for me to guide you on your exact needs?

To get these options click on notifications and the three bars icon on the top right of the popup. « desktop and mobile!

3rd option from the bottom "New comments on my bookmarked posts". I had it ticked for email but, as I said, it leads to too many emails now whereas before, there would be just the one. It was handy for threads that might not have activity every day but then suddenly there'd be a flurry of posts.

I've seen lots of others still complaining about it so I assume there's just no way around it but I would love if I was wrong about that.

I've set it to notifications within boards now instead so I'll see what that's like.

My understanding of your initial query is that you where getting too many emails and didn't know how to turn them off. As you can't follow a profile here, no way to get notifications of certain posts. So it is all posts or none.

It wasn't hate. It simply didn't work. You could post and be unable to get back to the thread.

It wasn't as simple as over moderation I'll leave it there.

I've asked before for an ignore feature/filter for things like AH or CA. Love to be able to ignore those long running threads on those forums. Just full of handbag fights.

I put up with the initial problems with vanilla because they didn't effect me much at all. But with this thread bouncing / anchoring on mobile the last 8 or 9 months, I nearly gave up using the site altogether after Christmas it was so bad, and it still hasn't been fixed. I'm sure there were a lot who never came back

If you're on your mobile and you view the profile of the person you want to ignore, you should find the Ignore button by pressing here (I've used yours as an example).

    Screenshot_20250815-215411~3.png

As for not being able to put entire threads on ignore, can't you just avoid reading them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,566 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

You can click into forums like CA or AH by accident. Be nice not to see them at all.

Try bookmarking this: https://www.boards.ie/discussions/bookmarked , it's very similar to the UserCP in Vbulletin.

Also, you can choose to follow only certain fora (probably from your mobile, TBH) and not select those you're not interested in - they'll show up here:

    image.png

or in the drop down menu on the top left if you're on your mobile.

@Quantum Erasure {bouncing} was so bad, and it still hasn't been fixed

And with the planned roll back to basic vanilla platform, I don't see it been fixed anytime soon!

I created an extension/script to hide it behind a timed overlay, that is working well for me and few others who have tried it.

As my script also hides the sub notice, I reversed it for paid subs only. Also include some handy keyboard shortcuts for desktop use. (eg Opening bookmarks on chrome).

Provided @28064212 with access to the code, so he might do something similar with his extension?

If anyone is interested, I could stripout the code to hide the sub message and just provide the overlay extension?

    I think that's too severe a filter.

Anyway it's off topic. There's a lot of filler in threads these days.
