I think in the event of FG nominating a replacement candidate, FF will also back that candidate.

Heather Humphries is the FG favoured candidate according to John Lee.

HH if willing would walk it. I know they're are a few issues in the past, but didn't derail her as a Minister.

She would be a strong candidate but I think Frances Fitzgerald might have a slightly broader appeal…

There’s a real classy take on someone being diagnosed with what sounds like a fairly serious medical issue. Not one bit surprised either

FG were ringing around journalists an hour before making the announcement to pitch their replacement candidates. It's a tough business.

I hope everything works out well for McGuinness, but do we all really have to do performative thoughts and prayers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,469 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

John Lee certainly confirmed that. Decision has been made more or less in FG is precisely what he said and they are out selling it.

Trying to spin someone contracting an illness as “not a great look” is a reflection on you and your moral compass. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭tradfan1

I think Olivia O'Leary would be a great candidate and could be possibly an agreed candidate for FF and FG - she could take some persuading though I feel!

I don’t see it for Fitzgerald. Regardless of her subsequent exoneration - she’s still tainted by the Garda whistleblower scandal in the eyes of a significant portion of the electorate.
She struggled to pull in transfers from anyone except FG and Labour in the 2019 European elections, and IMO would have the same problem now

I don't think Nick Delahanty is a right wing nut. He's actually on the money with things he talks about and has broke a few stories that others did know about.

Up there with Michael Mcdowell IMO.

To be fair I’d have probably contracted an illness that should be under control after mid November if I was the FG candidate this week.

I am scarlet for you 🙂. I think you owe that man an apology.

It appears Holohan has approached FF for a nomination. He hasn't a hope in hell of running.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,652 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Nah it amuses me that everyone is so against Michael McDowell for a position that is supposed to be non-political, when he is one of the strongest candidates, regardless of your views on him. It just proves my point. It's all politics.

Indeed but he has members of the Oireachtas, across the floor, if he wanted the, or if they were allowed.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

It was clear that I was posting about the implications for Kelly, which are indeed significant. There was no comment about McGuinness, good, bad or indifferent.

I'm sure she'll be touched by your attempt to protect the party's honour.

My advice for FG and for the government would be to agree a joint FF and FG candidate quickly and back them to the hilt. Ideally a person with long history of public representation and international connections; Sean Kelly, Simon Coveney, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Barry Andrews, Geraldine Byrne-Nason etc.

Yes they should agree a joint candidate. But I'd have a very hard time being convinced to vote for any of the above.

Also you said it should be a woman - sexist much?

    Quite suited?

    History might catch him out?

I am at the point now I hope Bertie runs and does well but doesnt win, the performative outrage of people opposed to even hearing his name is tiresome. Let the people decide their position on Bertie... yes... seriously... ...democracy... ...

I would certainly consider a vote for Simon Coveney if FG could get him to run. Heather Humphries too would be a good candidate.

More likely the other way around imho. FF will nominate a non-party candidate and FG will row in. Plausible deniability on both fronts - "an FF party candidate coudn't take on McGuinness" and "FG are bringing the sub on"

Both HH and FF are on record recently enough as saying they don't want the job. Not going to happen. You don't offer a stick like that to the opposition to beat you with.

@Deedsie why would you want such an eminently unsuitable candidate to run?

Unfortunately there is a trend in the last few years of awful candidates picking up "protest votes" 🙄 and winning.

"I don't really want to leave the EU, but we need to shake things up"

"I don't like Trump/Farage/Hitler all that much, but we need to shake things up"

Yep, effectively it's a "retirement" job where the main task is meeting and greeting people and having a chat.

So an affable personality is needed.

And Bertie has that. But unfortunately he has history that some people can't get over.

Hence, if Sean Kelly gets FG nomination, he'd be my favourite.

As for Sheridan - there's so much whiff of excrement and continued self love, that I reckon he's now got zero chance of even a nomination.

The naivety that he suggests that "Sean Gallagher people" are planting stories shows his utter unsuitability. Almost all the information published is available on various financial websites in relation to Nutriband which is a one trick pony that loses a massive amount of money and value is pure hope value

The position is non-political but getting elected to it is entirely political see the difference? He would be a terrible candidate at a national level politically for all the reasons previously posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,469 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Heather Humphreys name still very much in the mix this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,448 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

Sean Kelly is 73! and Heather Humphreys is 65 Francis Fitzgerald is 75. (Mairead McGuinness is 66)

Sean Kelly still seems that he has the energy for it, he withdrew from the race because he happy being an MEP.

Who will replace him as MEP https://corkcityreturningofficer.com/index.php/european-and-local-elections-2024/48-notice-of-poll-european-election-2024

People not happy the party who destroyed the countries finances, might run a former corrupt leader to be president. Worlds gone mad

If you want the people to be allowed have their say on him, surely you would have no issues with the likes of McGregor on the ballot so people can have their say on him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,499 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

If Sean Kelly was to win the list would skip John Mullins (RIP) to Martin Conway who is obviously on the outs with FG. Whether the party could stop him taking the seat though is another question, would he be brazen enough to take it?

If it did skip over him I'm guessing Jerry Buttimer wouldn't take it as he's a junior minister which would mean it'd go to Eileen Lynch who is a senator. If the senators want to keep their jobs in Ireland then it'd skip her, skip Michael Murphy (who is a TD now) and skip Garrett Kelleher (also a senator), leaving it go to Avril Cronin at end of list who is a councillor.

Could see Eileen Lynch taking it, seems to have an interest in European level matters. https://www.finegael.ie/our-people/senators/cork-north-west/eileen-lynch/

But so too is Catherine Connolly and she's got a nomination, and she's never held any really position bar the Leas-Ceann comhairele. And we've seen that the current president can be quite political in what he says and how he acts.
