It's a lot easier than any Ninja Gaiden I've played. It is challenging but the quick restarts mean it never really gets frustrating. Some tough boss battles but I honestly found them all a blast to figure out.

Well, I'll wait for the physical and I've picked up Mafia The Old Country on the way home, so will hop off that. The only real complaint I'm hearing is that its like an interactive movie, which is not necessarily a bad thing (Uncharted, God of War, etc).

What are the random games your dad rented for you in the 90s that you half remembered for years?

    Here's a few of mine:

    Lifeforce Tenka

    The Faery Tale Adventure

    Skyblazer

    Putty

Skyblazer is a hidden gem on the SNES. Same team made the Hook game which was way better than that awful movie deserved.

We weren't allowed to rent games because the first game we rented was Desert Strike and my mam banned us from renting games because my dad got really into it and was swearing too much.

So I am after finishing Mafia the old country . I am tempted to give it 10/10 but gameplay is a bit dated and some of it repetitive . But my lord the story , the immersion and the beauty of the game . Looked unreal on my 5080/9800 XD3 . Honestly one best video game stories i've ever played . Couldn't wait see what happened next . I think it's time re watch the Godfather …

    Wouldn't have been my Dad renting them or anything, would have just been me sent into the local video shop with whatever loose change he had to shut me up. But the main ones I ever remember renting were mostly for the Mega-Drive;

The Addams Family, James Bond, Robocop Vs Terminator, think there was a Jurassic Park one too (edit: just watched some gameplay video of the Jurassic Park game, and no, I've never played that).

Hey, without the internet to check out reviews and recommendations, you kinda just go for the movie tie-ins I guess…

I also remember one summer day a few years later being so bored at home that I got permission to walk almost 4 miles into town (and 4 miles back) to rent Crash Bandicoot 3 when I had my PS1.

The world would be a much better place if more people played Robocop vs Terminator.

Ah man we loved robocop v terminator, the cool soundtrack and the growls of ed 209. I have memories of renting Fantastic Dizzy and the immortal, as a kid they seemed impossible from reading now they are anything but.

You should play it now. It's not good. Some pretty awful eurojank gameplay and airplane hanger level design. The game kind of falls apart as well when every enemy is replaced by terminators.

    Banging soundtrack though.

I checked out a few full playthrough videos of some of the games posted above. Games I rented several times but was never able to finish.

The full playthroughs of some of them are about half an hour.

Sure, they're by people who have played the game extensively etc, but yeah that kind of stings.

That said, I did complete The Lion King and that's a real bastard hard game. I think the dev said they were forced to make it more difficult because Disney didn't want people completing it when renting it, so they'd have to rent it again.

I actually could never finish The Lion King as a kid and it was one of the first games I owned on the Mega Drive. It was the final Scar boss fight that got me, if I even got to that point.

Ended up going back to it years later, in my 20s, and I finally managed to finish it in one attempt. Still a pretty tedious battle of attrition to push Scar over the cliff IIRC.

The Lion King and stuff like the Ocarina of time water temple baffle me because I never found them that tough as a kid/teenager. The Lion King had that awful I just can't wait to be king stage but that was just rote memorisation. I do remember the scar boss fight being tough. One of those badly designed western boss fights where it never felt you were in control. I think the trick to it was to get as many throws in but I had times where the throws just wouldn't register.

Yep most games back then where 30 - 60 minutes long but you'd have to sink about 8-20 hours into them to get good enough to see the end. Way shorter than most modern games still (and more fun dare I say).

The making a game harder for the rental market was a big thing in the west. Streets of Rage 3 is horrible compared to its Japanese version, contra hard corp you could take 3 hits before losing a life but it's one hit kills in the west. Billy Bayou, made famous on AVGN, is a horrible game but the japanese version Mad City is fantastic.

Yeah it just feels oddly unresponsive - it’s been a while, but I think there are a few set mauling animations that play out so it doesn’t feel satisfying in the slightest.

And yeah, learning which giraffes were which in the Just Can’t Wait To Be King stage was a pain, offset only by a catchy chiptune version of the song.

I’ve zero doubt the game is fairly straightforward, just one that defeated my 8-year-old self :)

Yeah learning the patterns to the giraffes, the stampede level, and then awful attacking when you're adult Simba. The game was fairly horrible. But also, since it was one of the only MD games I owned, I also just played it relentlessly.

Come on, it's like the original Mortal Kombat. We all played it because it was edgy and gory but both just aren't that good. And I'll admit, both Terminators and RoboCop goes a long way.

Played more of Ragebound last night. Fun getting more into it. Tricky at times, but also feels pretty fair. That said, I did the first level of the second character, and it'll take a bit to get used to her style. If enemies aren't directly in front/behind/above her, I'm guessing your only option is to do the jump kick (not always enough room or time to do it) or dodge (can often throw you directly into another enemy). She's tricky, but I do like the ranged damage.

But man, I'm really getting the aul' itch to play Baldurs Gate 3 again… Completely unrelated to NG Ragebound, but just that mood came over me again recently.

Sounds great! I'm happy for a game to not revolutionise my world if the story is good and keeps me engaged. Might look out for this once a sale hits (as im working through a few games) but I'm all in for a good Mafia story.

A few hours into Old Country myself, and yes, it is definitely an interactive movie. It was at least an hour before I had my hands on a gun, and its still on the rails for now, no open world for me yet. Soon maybe, maybe not. Not sure. But they have nailed the look and feel, and the voice acting is on point, totally helped by an excellent facial and eye animation system. Straight forward stuff so far, but I'm on board for the ride.

WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers got a patch that nerfed it a bit, improved the get up and heal animation i-frames and interruptions:

    https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2277560/view/498329191821869869

Also they sped up the lift waiting animation and they will have a new patch that will respawn the player at the fog gate:

Optimized game code in preparation for allowing players to choose to respawn at either the Shrine or the BOSS Fight Entrance after death

Sounds like they ditched trying to be an open world game and went back to the Mafia 2 approach. Wasn't a fan of that game but it's probably the clever option to choose to keep the game as high tech as possible with a smaller team.
