But if Mods and Cmods can't donate a measely few quid to keep the place alive then it is a bad look.

Nobody has to donate and I am not saying any poster in particular should donate.

I am just saying it is not a good look to people who are unsure what to do.

Boards should give moderators subscriber status as a recognition for their free service to the proper functioning of Boards.

Only potential issue is how that might skew the 'Keep Boards Alive' tracking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,821 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Seeing as the subscriber target is at 34% and the funding target is only at 24%… what happens if that trend continued and they get 2000 subscribers. The funding target assumes all subscribers pay for a full year, but that's not happening. Paper napkin math says the funding target would only be around 70-75%. Does boards.ie get shut down in that scenario?

What's putting me & I suspect others off, apart from the carrier billing, is the "Days Left" on the Keep Boards Alive.

There's no hint as to what happens after it expires. It's portrayed as a deadline & as others have said, people will stop subscribing when it's clear that the target won't be reached

Great idea. We had this before as well and it'd be nice to have mod, cmod and admin contributions recognised.

I've no idea what the difference is between a mod and a cmod (and I'm here twenty years) but expecting people who already volunteer their time for a website to pay extra for the privilege is taking the piss

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,926 CMod ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

Moderators enforces the rule of the forum and may issue sanctions such as cards and bans for rulebreaking. Category Moderators (CMods) oversee the first stage of appeals for sanctions as well as supporting the mods and helping to choose new mods. CMods do not actively moderate forums in their category.

You want to give subscriber status to all mods regardless of their performance even when some mods are partly or

wholly responsible for the current situation. What a great idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭championc

Got to feel that subs dribbling in now are less likely to re-subscribe in 12 months time.

This whole thing needs a whole new business plan, or a whole new team, or both imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 405 ✭✭SharpCoder

Yeah, give free subscriber / paid member status to mods that remove adverts and revenue from the few members who practically live on here and make their goal even more likely to be not met. That's boards ie thinking right there 😂

@Genghis If your having difficulty adapting it, query your AI of your choosing to patch it for your use.

@The Continental Op What have you done to try and save boards? Strange to use it as a reason for not subbing. You probably not going to anyway?

I have shared the news of the platform on socials and was In communication with an old mod/admin of the site and got a statement out of him on it.

Also added 'Boards.ie: Mike ' to my chat, so if he sees the overlay in action, he might decide to apply it to the site.

Creation of the extension, evolved from discussion on thread. Never planned on creating it. Privacy preserving script, where allot of third party extensions for doing it seek allot of general permissions across all sites.

You're correct on one level, but on another they may not have it to spare, everyone is feeling the pinch these days.

With that said, they shouldn't be running the place down here or elsewhere or moaning and whinging about petty issues.

The concern currently is keeping the place running, and while a Mod or admin might have an issue with how the place is run, they shouldn't be airing those grievances here or elsewhere online.

I know they're volunteers, but even volunteers need to respect the organisation they represent.

If you were working for a company entering insolvency and started making public statements about the inner workings of that organisation you wouldn't only be removed from your position you'd likely be subject to legal action. The point being, keep your bellyaches to yourself, it's unbecoming.

Can't be doing any favors to the place if the people charged with running it never have a good word to say about it.

    Glazers Out!

If the powers that be take issue with a moderator's comments on an unrelated website, they can remove the moderator.

Why's it any business of any regular member what a person says on an unrelated website, or whether or not they are financially contributing to a website they already contribute countless free labour hours to?

Some of you are taking the absolute p!ss now

If you genuinely think the issues with boards lies with mods and not the cack-handed management of the site and the ill-fated decision to move to Vanilla then I don't know…

Moderators already are ad free. Always have been.

Well, I joined in 2009 and only really became active in 2014-2015 or so? Hard to remember but I do recall people always going on and on and on about moderation. Not saying that all complaints are invalid or anything but the internet has been changing rapidly since then and then there's the catastrophic issues you cited.

Theres a cloud in the sky.

Its obviously the mods fault. Theres nothing some wont blame mods for.

🤣 Some of the tall tales going on here with "I was honestly just about to sub but then a mod shat in my cornflakes and now Im huffing" are entertaining if nothing else. Give over with that nonsense.

Any word on the suggestion of having this thread for Boards future news only and a separate chat thread?

Plan B should be to cut costs, and cut them drastically.

A site like this should not be costing anywhere near 140k a year to run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 11,456 ✭✭✭✭J Mysterio

I don't see how mods are in any way responsible for the current situation. That is on management. I find the whining by posters such as yourself to be really quite pathetic.

People have always been complaining about mods. There are always people unhappy with moderation in a particular thread or forum. This has been the way of the world.

The issue that has caused the cratering of users was the switch to vanilla, not the mods.

I am finding it sort of hilarious that the rules in current affairs appear to be all over the place. I see a post has been edited in the immigration thread(by Mike, no less) cause Tommy Robinson was called a racist grifter(it also mentions his assaults and the fact he was associated with a paedophile but all of this is factual) ... So the rules have opened up but then that's classified as unacceptable? 😂 It's almost as if there's a level of pandering going on.

If that's the direction the site wants to go, fair enough. But honestly it's an odd direction. Being really racist all good but don't you dare highlight how the racists behave.

But in reality, that should have been part of Plan A. I have zero faith in them getting to 1000 anytime soon, never mind 2000.

I saw a comment the other day about additional development. Surely that's like building a conservatory on a house that's falling down ???

@SharpCoder I've gone through your posts on this thread and you really are spouting a lot of nonsense as "facts".

If you'd like to add something constructive please do. If you continue posting uninformed nonsense you'll be removed from the thread.

Quick demo of the extension. Seeing is believing?

Pasted the bookmark link in, because didn't want to be showing my profile email.

Take notice of the scroll bar jumping before the overlay is removed.

Also tried unsuccessfully to force the display of the bookmark icon on chrome.

The lack of getting in touch with users in a personal way is going to be the downfall of this effort.

It's like an election, you have to get out and canvass at ground level.

The general news messages aren't enough. Somebody or some group within boards need to coordinate this, it's never too late.

Getting a personal message to your mailbox is needed. I've been on the Weather and Fair City threads and about one tenth have subscribed. There are great posters posting away and seem oblivious to what's happening with the site.

'Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? A nation turns It's lonely eyes to you.'

I think a lot of forum mods have linked the announcement thread in their forums

TBH I'm not using the email I signed up with anymore so maybe pm here to each member

No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change this World

All regular posters know exactly what's going on.

It's not their job to bank roll the site. They are doing enough by contributing to the site by posting.

The site would be nothing without the regular posters which has seen a downward spiral for many reasons.

Having regulars pay and post would be instant death of the site.

    Why can't it be both.

The inconsistent moderation has IMO also driven people from the site. Not that the migration wasn't a disaster. Ironically recent changes even the full screen adds seems to improved the usability, for me anyway.
