I also think mods, cmods and admin mods should also be paid member subscribers, lead by example

If they were getting paid for doing the job I would agree but forcing anyone to subscribe would be the wrong direction unless members are benefiting financially from the site like some are by selling goods here.

I can't say I interact enough on the site to know even half of the mod's are round here, although I do see some names mentioned more than others. But that was some turn around from you - and paying the full year too! That actually put a smile on my face :D

Well you're dealing with a farmer. When a farmer is making a deal what he's saying, and what he's really thinking and intending to do can be very different! I'm not saying I was being disingenuous, but I was weighing it all up. Everything I said about the flicker on screen etc was true. But there aren't alternatives to boards for what I'm interested in.

And like Ryanair staff who get a bonus for identifying oversized bags the overzealous mods will get a bonus for warnings and bans issued. Win win situation and will ensure a quick demise of Boards

Not everyone has the disposable income. Also plenty of moderators have contributed huge amounts to keeping the site alive IMHO. Also the ones who stuck around post migration have been lumped with inferior tools for moderation etc. So obliging them seems a bit silly TBH.

CA took over as the go to place for all the sort of stuff that used to live in AH.

But that would probably kill the site.

The likes of CA is probably driving the majority of the traffic to this place.

If make that invisible then the amount of traffic would just fall off a cliff.

When the move to Vanilla was made the then restricted fourm "Soccer" had to be put in Groups (along with "Sex and Sexuality ". Threads for these fourms never appeared on the homepage, and it killed what was previously a very lively soccer fourm.

I'm assuming that the same would be the case if you restricted CA.

Soccer forum still lively btw, even if not for you. A really good community there now for the most part. Adult conversation

I am contradicting my own words on using scripts!

Successfully just created a script for 'TamperMonkey' to remove the site notice. I was testing it and using it to bypass 'Xitter' age gating.

If there is any paid member, that wants the script DM me or just ask your favourite AI to craft a bit of javascript!

@Mars Bar Sent you a DM, because you where looking for it's removal for paid members!

My scripting knowledge is poor because of neglect of not using it for years. That's why I get help from AI on how to write stuff. If the site owners and mike can't remove the bouncing, I doubt a script could do it!?

@Dublin Calling But there is methods that boards could use and surprised they haven't already @Boards.ie: Mike

    1. Hide Content Until Fully Loaded
    2. Reserve Space for Late-Loading Content
    3. Skeleton Loaders / Placeholders
    4. Scroll Anchoring
    5. Overlay Spinner with Prevent Scroll

But this is all redundant now with the planned roll back to a minimal vanilla platform?

From what I can gather, the bouncing is down to the way that quotes, embedded tweets, YouTube embeds and ads are not present when the page first loads. So when these do load, it messes up the page anchors. The only way I could think to stop them on the client side via scripting would be to block all of these, but blocking quotes wouldn't be ideal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,390 ✭✭✭Dublin Calling

The bouncing has been fixed before. I would imagine is it something simple, if you had the know-how! However, is appears both the current owners of Vanilla and SaaS provider Higher Logic don't. From reading online, it appears the original developers have left and Vanilla is no longer being developed.

@Dublin Calling Just tried creating an extensive that puts an overlay over the pages until fully loaded. It maybe be preventing the bouncing, but replaces it with a delay and overlay display. So I don't know which is worse!

    ^^ Folder provided above!

    Load the Extension:

Go to chrome://extensions/ in your browser.

    Enable “Developer mode”.

Click “Load unpacked”, and select your folder.

If anyone else wants to test it?

I'm looking into combine both features (bouncing & message removal) into one extension!

I know that the banner re subscription isn't showing on desktop (until one clicks into a thread).

I just noticed that the 2 sticky threads (this one and the subscription thread) don't show up on the "latest posts" tab on desktop either.

If I were exclusively a desktop user, I wouldn't see much of what's going on with the forum.

Edit: Solved my own query! I clicked on "posts" at the top of the desktop page and can now see both the banner and the sticky threads. Never used the "posts" button before!

Carry on, nothing to see here.....😊

I managed to combine the two in one extension! Although it doesn't completely remove the bouncing it does reduce the amount of it you see.

If anyone is using Quetta Android mobile browser you can also load extensions from zip files.

Handy because I didn't want to be manually configuring the other extensions on mobile.

If any paid member is looking for the extension, PM me and I will upload to github and provide a link.

Alternatively just tag me and I will add you to chat, which has the zip

    • Edit: Tested and works on chrome & quetta, also got it as a temp ext for firefox.

At a guess, it would also greatly reduce the need for legal costs as well as server traffic costs. If the site becomes unsustainable using the current model, the alternative to trying to prop up a failing revenue stream would be to drastically cut costs by downsizing the site. By archiving older content and reducing traffic generated by non-subscribers, hosting costs could be slashed. Taking just this thread as a microcosm for boards more generally, we're seeing a huge volume of moaning and whingeing from a very small number of posters about why they won't pay, why boards is crap, why the mods are crap etc… Personally, I don't believe those of us who genuinely do care about this community should be putting up with this nonsense, let alone funding that cohort of posters.

Moderate in a fair manner across the board and there's no room for complaint.

Mods on this site allow their own biases to influence their actions, while that might be understandable on one level it creates a situation where someone with opinion X is free to flout the basic rules around civil behaviour while someone with opinion Y gets the sharp end of the stick from mods for the smallest infractions.

Anyone being an aggressive prick shouldn't be tolerated. Take it to that basic a level and all the other crap never gets a chance to be an issue. It's been repeated to you for years but you choose not to do it. Some people are immune to good advice it would seem.

So you don't want to fund their existence here and they don't want to fund your existence here, bit of as stalemate there.

I don't think moving things behind subscriber walls would fix things.

The amount of posts from 20+ years ago are pretty useless nowadays, not to mention the stagnant talk to forums.

However the issue is a lot more than that, the database is a disaster, it has to be heavily fixed before they ever try to migrate or even step down to self hosted.

people are rightfully annoyed with aspects of boards from the lackluster approach to fixing anything not related to revenue.

Like where did most ex boards staff go to, some at least some tried to fix some forums and if these ex employees are all gone, why are their accounts all still active with full employee access, talk about security issues and people worry about their payment info on here 😂.

On a lighter note, there must be prunes, adjustments, re-factoring, database changes going forward and i just don't see any evidence of that from the few threads that have gone up recently related to this topic.

May I ask for curiosity, are you going to subscribe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,804 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

It's a bit weird that you and a handful of others have specifically fixated on whether capaill is gonna subscribe or not. It's sort of none of your business. 😂

It's Germane in light of comments made about this platform on at least one other platform.

One of the biggest problems with boards is the seeming inability for people to be civil to one another.

When people in senior mod positions can't rise above it what's the hope for anyone else?

If you spend years winding people up and things get to the point where they are on boards currently you can expect people to ask you such a question in a polite manner.
