If the only plan to attract new subscribers from now on is to just add increasing number of ads and have that banner, then the target hasn't a hope in hell of being met.

Agreed. It also ruins the site. I'm all for people being able to post about immigration. All I really want is for it to be kept to the relevant threads instead of the same people bringing up their agendas and perceived slights over and over again in Feedback, HelpDesk, and now here.

Contrary to the expectations of some, subscriptions would appear to be fairly linear since word got out, with only perhaps a slight tapering off in the past week. I think 1000 subs will be reached but it might take something extra to get to the 2000 mark.

In short, It doesn't look good. But, we also don't really have a lot data relevant to the regular user base as far as I can tell

I seem to remember use dropping off during the summer when schools / colleges were off, and picking up again in September (admittedly this was years ago)

If the site was in a somewhat presentable condition in a couple weeks, maybe we could put on some sort of a drive in colleges during freshers week, or just print off a few posters and stick them up around campuses, if there's any students on here at all these days

Top up their phone by €20 a month, get unlimited calls, texts and data and get to keep the credit too so they build up phone credit each month they don't use it. I once had €180 of credit on my phone a few years back, used it to enter competitions on the radio.

I don't see many companies allowing "carrier billing" to be used in lieu of payments.

My issue is others dragging opinions of mods and one or two threads to this one so no won't be debating you here .

At least you own your views kaiser , which whether they be right wing or not are usually grounded in some reality .

Everyone is entitled to their opinion just not to shout it down with misinformation and skewing facts .

Point is , el gato , on that thread anti immigration posters are in the majority and some are decent as per above but some are there to shill for very extreme views , which is not alright . Those posters if sanctioned, cannot take their bans except to blame the few not anti immigration posters and bring it here or to other feedback threads constantly , which is very tiresome and hence my original post .

My quote about "owning it " was specific to those few posters who have very extreme views but deny it ...not to all those who have doubts about immigration in general some of whom I very much respect.

I know that there is a difference between those expressing dismay at immigration numbers and the handling of it , and those on 'the far right ' , but on the other side if you disagree you are likewise described as 'far left ' or "PRO open borders " which is just as reductive and unhelpful .

There is room for reasoned debate somewhere in between .

The mods have been attempting to allow that , but the same gobs always push it and whinge when they get warned .

They should use DRP to solve their issues/ get it off their chests not use this thread .

It is the same group of people making every feedback thread a battleground unnecessarily .

Anyway I am responding to you two here and as Kaiser said it now is doing the same thing as it is derailing what should be a constructive thread about helping to save the site if possible , not how to bring it down .

Help keep Boards going , subscribe or donate if you can.

Some of the streaming services, Disney+ etc accept it for their subscriptions. Also charities. I think Adverts.ie still do.

There's a big thread listing new places where it can be used.

I've a couple of hundred waiting to be used but half of it expires in September so Boards will get that if they can set it up on time.

Many users off line in the summer and might not even know this is going on .

How to get it to their attention urgently ?

Think if it could be brought to the attention as in a pm maybe of as many users who have not been online or maybe just tagging as many people as possible to this thread ?

I know someone who is good at that for forum games for example but might not want to get into this ??

Could suggest maybe current users who have been offline but that you all think might be interested ...

I don't know if it's been said yet but there are a lot of people who would be willing to subscribe if they felt it would make a difference. At the moment, the whole thing gives off a vibe that you would be throwing your money into a black hole if you subscribe now because you are so far off meeting your target.

But if you manage to reach a certain threshold where people actually believe it's possible, you will see momentum.

For a site with so many moderators, it shouldn't be that hard to curb most of these "bad" threads or just have a immigration thread that all immigration stuff is sent to by them so people can choose to ignore or block, could make it not post email alerts etc, but it seems they are mostly locked to just one category or one set of forums, probably tied into the mess of a usergroup situation.

Another way of paying for things with your phone, on whatever type of contract or deal would be texting"charity" to 55555 or whatever to donate 5 euro or texting today FM "win" to pay them money for the cash machine draw. Lots of ways to use your phone to pay for things.

Basically the same thing as radio competitions.

Try got into Tesco or most retailers are try pay with phone credit.

I feel like there's a damned if you do and damned if you don't element to this. People have been moaning about moderation since God was a boy. While it was never perfect, it is a bit galling to see people demand light touch moderation and then immediately starting complaining about it (not directed at you to be clear).

I merely stated you can pay via phone using that method I didn't suggest paying for things in bricks and mortar. Much like I'm not suggesting that you try to pay for things using cash online.

Maybe if they called it Unused Mobile Credit, we'd get it!

That'll have to be done after she sinks if it comes to that.

For now it's all hands on deck.

I suspect that it was an accident & only applies to old 3 mobile accounts like mine. I don't think 3 can stop it so we all got offered alternative deals but turned them down. My 20 per month gets used for YouTube premium, phone apps etc. In the good old days you could buy things like a Chromecast with it but then they imposed a limit per transaction.

So all i get is full page ads now on the mobile site anytime i click on a comment or new thread.

    Is this the new norm

I've signed up for a year. It came back to the good of boards outweighing the bad.

My biggest obstacle was feeling unfairly banned by Beasty, and everytime I'd try and re register after 2 or 3 months he'd ban me again. The phrase he used was 'nuking' accounts. He did untold damage to the site.

seeing doom and gloom posts. The end is nigh… but the boards.ie owners putting up the message that not meeting a target and boards will close, plus saying the yearly sub has the most impact. Well, that surely kills off anyone paying yearly.

I paid 1/4ly and happy to pay, but not if we’re told we’re miles off target and closing is likely. It seems a bizarre announcement.

My credit card is updating shortly, so my payment won’t automatically renew. Sad, but the recent announcement seems like a a self fulfilling prophecy 😔

It seems like a desperate measure/Hail Mary pass. Doesn’t bode well.

Just a thought, but I reckon the more contentious forums, particularly those that attract a lot of bans and re-regs, such as CA, Politics etc.. should become subscriber only. I'm guessing 90% of the work of keeping boards ticking over lies with the these few forums. Also serves to make a few bob out of the re-reg trolls ;)

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,746 ✭✭✭hometruths

This is not an insane idea. From a lot of the discussion about problems with CA/Politics from both poster and mod point of view, it sort of seems like the answer is to drop them altogether but that is a bit a drastic.

A more sensible solution is to make them subscriber only.

    Pros outweigh the cons IMO.

Way back when, the Sex & Sexuality forum was limited to subscribers only. Slightly different reasons, but the same logic could be used - i.e. that if access costs you money you're a bit less likely to act the maggot.

Now in saying that, I thought that it was practically in the welcome mail when you sign up to boards that it's a good idea to go and spend five minutes in AH, and if at any point in those five minutes you think "ah come on now", just leave and never go back there. Certainly my experience of boards has been massively enhanced by looking at AH no more than about once every 3 years or so...
