    So it begins…

First glance I actually thought it said £140m…

TeamTalk.com had it at exactly £100 million yesterday. Do we reckon it's all just click bait for now?

Nothing would surprise me this window to be fair. Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko all wrapped up. Fees high but in line with the current mad market. Wages reasonable compared to the madness we've become known for. So if the club have briefed that they're after Baleba, I'm not going to ignore it.

Plus with Garnacho seemingly close to a Chelsea move and rumours of Antony to Benfica, we might just have the cash to pull this off.

garnacho agrees personal terms with chelsea.

wonder where we start the negotiating at? i think £45m will be the best we can do.

    romano:

Understand Alejandro Garnacho has agreed every detail of personal terms with Chelsea! Deal done on player side, he only wants Chelsea as revealed here since July. Talks with Man United about fee will follow soon.

If we get Sesko I think get rid of Hoijland. Berrada's big thing at City was if players don't perform for 2 years then get rid. If we get a loan with a fee at least we can use that to go towards a GK or CM. Next year then if he performs alright we might get the 30-40 million that would align with his PSR cost so you're not financially making a loss or you keep him in the squad as back up.

At the moment he's not even a back up, I would still have Sesko, Zhirkzee, Mbuemo or Cunha in ahead of him in the starting line up and his value will just plummet more.

More excited to see the back of him and his big mouth than any of the admittedly exciting incomings.

    Glazers Out!

I don't think we'll be able to sell Hojlund immediately. Best bet would be send him out on loan with an option for recall in January. That may reduce the loan fee we get for him. But allows us to see how he does - hopefully increase his value, and if we're in a position where Sesko is injured and we're desperate, we can take him back.

Garnacho going is another problem off the books.

Culture change is most welcome. Even if season is poor least this is step in right direction. Club feels like it's finally waking up and moving forward and that will be good thing long term.

Harwood reporting all player stuff agreed except for fee. I know he's not tier 1 but he was certain from the start that Sesko was only going one way. Doesn't give Brighton much time to replace but ye never know

All just guesses but honestly I don't see him going for less than £100M. Brighton will want big money and he's effectively tied down for the next four years.

I wonder would BHA look at Yalcouye as the replacement.

By all accounts he had a good season last year in Austria but maybe a season too soon to be promoting him as a first team regular/Baleba replacement.

I am unusally positive on Baleba.

I really do think we are gonna push for him this summer, cause waiting to go again for him next summer carries too much risk - you could easily see Liverpool in for him next summer (wouldn't rule out this summer tbh), Chelsea cause Chelsea. City I could see going for him if Madrid follow through on trying to get Rodri. Hell, you could see Madrid in for him.

Liverpool are the only side i would fear trying to grab him this summer, so it feels like this is our chance to get him.

Also, regardless of competition for him - you could see us having another average season, and either not being in a position to get him or just being that bit more unattractive.

As long as we are hearing stories of Brighton valuing him something then he is available to buy. Just do we have the finances to get close enough to their ask. IMO we HAVE to know that its going to need close to 100m (could be 90+10, or even more!) so if we are seriouly interested, the talk of him being valued at 100 (or 104…) shouldn't be a surprise or something that scares us off.

I hate loan + option deals. See no benefit to them from the selling/loaning clubs perspective.

Even if he does well, you will probably end up with Milan trying to buy him for 20m or another loan and Hojlund saying its Milan or no one (bleeding Antony)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,381 ✭✭✭✭JRant

I'm with you on this one. I don't think the 100M fee will come as a surprise to the club and in my opinion this is the window to get him in. Plus, next summer is a WC year and it's never a good year to try do a lot of business so we may be front loading that work to this summer, which is a bloody good idea and seems to be something similar to what Liverpool are doing.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,566 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I do wonder if that is why we can seemingly afford this much business. We are simply spending next years budget, or most of it. Maybe if we get this deal done we can only do a keeper and a couple of depth players next summer. If that is the trade off, then fair enough.

Yup. I read his preference has been Chelsea since the fall out but it’s quite telling how few clubs showed interest. People half-jokingly mentioning making him as part of a swap deal with Brighton but clubs like that probably wouldn’t want the attitude even with plenty of potential to work with.

Anyone remember that Hojlund, Garnacho, Mainoo celebration on the hoarding? Could be down to one soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,566 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Mainoo, Baleba, Sesko pic next (and last…) please.

Mainoo and Baleba could be an amazing midfield pairing in a year or two. Like best in the world levels.

It Would be the most reasonable explanation really and it's something I can also get behind. Transfer fees are crazy enough this year, imagine the lunacy we'll see with a WC on and then trying to get players in later in the window.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I'm not sure Mainoo has it to be a top midfielder. He's far more better going forward than backwards, and for me a top midfielder has to be comfortable with both. Then again, Roy Keane started out as something similar and he didn't turn out too bad.

For me, Mainoo needs a bit more aggression. He's good on the ball, he's a good passer, clearly good at shooting, but if he's going to be a midfielder he needs a lot more aggression in his game, and certainly getting back a bit more. His fitness need work too.

The raw materials are there, you just hope we can mould them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,566 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I agree. But 'counter' that he is 20.

He does need to up his agreesion and intensity, and get better at anticipating danger the other direction.

    but he is 20.

I think he has the time and ability and tool set to do it.

He might not do it, but I think there is a good chance in 2 years time if he does work hard and develop that him and Baleba could be the best CM pairing in football.

And looking at him in pre-season… he is looking very good. He is looking lean, strong and getting around the pitch. I'm liking what I am seeing as a step up in the aspects of his game that are the worry.

I was just thinking of Leicester and you'd certainly fancy us more than them before that season. Then Chelsea also went from 10th to Champions.

While it is certainly unlikely I don't see it as an impossibility.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,715 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

He's been totally crocked by injuries for quite a long while now. Can't see it happening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭d22ontour

He's out injured for the next 3 months according to him and 4 months according to Barca who want him off the registered players list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,870 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

Chelsea were champions the season before that - the 10th was because of José sabotaging them after the incident with the physio.

Leicester, remarkable as it was, was due to the big guns all being in transition (and the aforementioned José antics). You could probably find reasons why all of last years top 3 might fall away this year - City were flaky last year and Pep seems knackered, Liverpool have had a lot of churn, Arsenal are Arsenal etc.

This is how it looks to me too, doing two windows worth of spending in one summer. Gambling a little to make sure we finish in Europa if not the CL positions.

Assuming we get Baleba and a new no. 1, I can see us being relatively quiet next year. Maybe a CB to replace Maguire and Licha, a back up keeper and perhaps a new wing back. Definitely think purchases next summer will be in sub 40-50m bracket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,203 ✭✭✭paulbok

You would hope the club are sitting down with Mainoo over a new contract and explaining this. That right now he's just not ready as a weekly starter and is back up to Bruno, so learn off him. Then next year with Bruno leaving (imo) he'll take over that spot if he puts the effort in this year. He needs to work on his positioning as a no.8 and toughen up a bit.

If this is the plan perhaps they would need to bring an experienced squad midfielder for a year or two as backup/mentor to both Mainoo & Baleba next year as they (and Collyer) are young, with only Ugarte as a senior MF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,949 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Any thoughts that we might bring in a back up striker if Hojlund goes?

Obi is very young and green. Zirks is improving but he's not a 9. I just don't want Sesko to be under huge pressure from the start as the only real striker in the team. We did that with Rasmus and it broke him (or certainly contributed).
