I have been given some crazy quotes to make a will. We have a very straight forward plan and it really is two sentences.

    Any suggestions ?

is there a chance of the will being “contested”?

Ours cost about €150 - that was in 2019.

in that case you can do it yourself, with appropriate witnesses.

If there was any potential for it being contested by an excluded party better to engage a solicitor.

We got it done a couple of months ago and I think it was 250. Co Clare.

The cheapest place to make a will is at home.

All you need is pen and paper and two witnesses to your signature.

You will save a couple of hundred euro.

If you get it wrong someone else might end up losing considerably more.

You can do it for free via the RNLI, it's up to you if you include anything in it for them.

Making a will is not a DIY job. Solicitors are insured and will have to pay up if anything goes wrong.

It is easy make an error and the consequences can be very serious.

if you are member of credit union it's free...dunno if it's all of them though....Google seems like a lot.

Hi, I have a very straightforward will, my local solicitor charged €50.

    Hi,

Optionally you can leave a few $ to the RNLI and they have a will guide … Ive no affiliation with them

That would be a ridiculous way to make a will. They have no professional indemnity cover and can only deal with generic boilerplate circumstances in any event.

    Go to a proper solicitor.

There is nothing more expensive than a cheap expert!

they send you to a solicitor

For a "standard" will or amendment. You presumably have to pay for any kind of personalised service beyond the formal witnessing of the will. Anyone making a will needs to consider a number of scenarios such as an unanticipated early death, sentimental items and tax to name but a few.

Was that all in for a single or pair?

Recently got quoted €920 (inc Vat) for a pair of Mirroring Wills. Will is very Bassic, House/Wife/2 Kids not much else.

The sample Chat GBT gave me is very similar to friends wills with similar set ups

For both of us, I think they quoted 200 for 1 person and extra 50 for spouse

Interesting as i have been nagged to make a will and if i want to leave it to the cats and dogs home if i wish .

No family or kids or anyone to contest it , does it need to be hand written or on a pc down loaded and then signed.

Might have been fate finding this thread.

Mine, simple and straightforward, local solicitor was 50 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭Jellybaby_1

We made our wills in 2021. I rang every solicitor in our area and the prices were up to €500+, absolutely mad money. We eventually found a couple charging €100, or €150. I'd suggest to ring around as many solicitors as you can. It's just a sheet of paper in the end really. But absolutely legal. And keep it up to date, especially when deaths occur.

Most credit unions have a deal with a local solicitor for members to make a basic will for free. Check with your CU,

Are will kept central located as such. If nobody aware of a will or not due to witnesses or people who know have died also. Can a search be done to see if person x has one. I mean by a legal profession and not any Joe soap

for a married couple where all the assets are in joint names, im struggling to see why a will is needed

What happens if they're both killed in the same car crash? Dying intestate is generally not a great strategy in Ireland.

I recently got two quotes for making a new will in my local town , one €150 the other €400! I’m meeting the solicitor next week to make a new will (€150)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,982 ✭✭✭Claw Hammer

The key point is "basic". It is not a matter of downloading a template from a PC and finding a couple of handy witnesses and its all done. Many people do not think about some of the scenarios which happen such as spouse of siblings dying before them, tax planning, ensuring the will is secure and can be found not to mention avoiding technical errors which can make the will void. A solicitors secretary got a will drafted in the office for her friends mother and then brought it to them to sign it. Their husbands witnessed it. The result was the bequests from the mother to her friends was void.
Even Cats and Dogs Home wills can be problematic. The will leaves the estate to the cats and Dogs Home in Ballytown. By the time the person dies the home has closed down. Next thing a previously unknown third cousin shows up claiming the estate!

Contacted my cu and forwarded to a solicitor fairly quickly and got chatting .

I assume basic is with no land or family making things simple and not having loads of pages.

Basic is a 5 liner which may or may not be suitable even with no land and family.
Do you have any important personal possessions that you don't want ending up in a car boot sale?

Are there any charities you would like to benefit.

Are there any relations you DON'T want to benefit?

Remember a will is ambulatory and it sometimes happens people come into substantial assets shortly before death.

A bachelor brother might die leaving you something. The prize bonds or the lotto might pay out.
The residue of your will might end up being far larger than is now expected.
