    2FM Groundhog day for Dan

Dan Healy, Head of RTÉ 2FM, said:
“It’s early days for the new 2FM schedule which first went on air in February and therefore isn’t fully reflected in these results.

We’re just back from a great weekend of broadcasting from All Together Now and are getting ready to head to Stradbally for Electric Picnic.

We’re also very excited about the weekend schedule which features Demi and Mikey, both recruited through the expressions of interest process we ran last year and have also seen good gains for Graham and Emma.”

So we can take it that the increases in you weekends is due to the new schedule but its early days for all the drops in audience during the week.

Long overdue for 2FM to be re-branded as RTE Gold

Classic hits would probably sue them if they tried

    This too shall pass.

It could be that they start selling ads as part of the agreement to close the other radio stations.

Time that they stopped supporting 2FM out of the licence fee.

Doesn’t look like the Q102 relaunch is setting the ratings on fire 🔥

2fms music playlist is still more versatile than Bauer media and Choice Broadcasting stations combined.

    This too shall pass.

    Thank god for onic :)

It's not about that, RTÉ should know where 2FM sits, is it there to be what it currently is, if so why are they spending so much on it? while why do they have a night sports show on the station?

Make it a music station, make it a youth station, but if you know you have to make cuts in other areas of Public service broadcasting you should first cut there.

They have lost listeners for the past two books. I doubt this is what they had in mind. There strategy of using the personalities has not been working.

Why is Ray D'arcy on national radio?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭chilloutrelax

Another interesting development in Dublin is the big drop for Spin in Dublin. They have now fallen behind 98fm in terms of market share (who are also quite a bit behind the others). They were almost double 98fm a couple of years ago.

    Because Moya said

Moya Doherty made the comments before the Oireachtas Communications today where she came in for strong questioning from TDs over what RTÉ pays some of its star presenters.

How do these JNLR metrics work? How do they know how many radios tuned in?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 350 ✭✭chilloutrelax

The JNLR (Joint National Listenership Research) measures radio listening in Ireland through a continuous, year-round survey of approx. 16,000 people aged 15+. Using a 7-day diary (in 15-minute intervals), it captures listening habits by station, time, location, and device. Data is collected via face-to-face and telephone interviews, then weighted to reflect national demographics. Results are published quarterly and form the official currency for radio audience measurement in Ireland.

Why is the taxpayer paying for 2FM?

What is the business case for RTE Gold? Who pays for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Up to 2011 2FM was funded via commerical Revenue, RTÉ since 2011 have given circa 3m per year to the station, the station is one area that RTÉ has never cut or has only cut very slightly. They've failed to make gains since 2011, and have also fail to cut licence fee funding to the station. RTÉ have argued that it is an important part of the public service broadcast (but I will let them argue that).

RTÉ Gold was set up as part of RTÉ initial set of Digital Radio stations as part of its DAB trail. Independent Radio argued that it, and other digital only stations, should not carry advertising during the trail period.

In their New Direction RTÉ attempted to close all digital radio stations, however it was told it must apply to the minister to close them, they did close the DAB trial with that new direction. No ministerial approval was required. But the stations were now on two broadcast services Saorview and Virgin Media.

Similarly as part of their 2028 Strategy, they want to close all digital radio stations but GOLD, this is possibly due to the fact that it is the most popular digital station and many asked for it to be saved.

RTÉ have asked the minister to close the remain stations, a decision has yet to be made.

You know I may have mixed up the names of their "new direction" and their "2024 strategy" but sure they are so similar in content, you might confuse them.

it suits everyone in the industry to leave 2fm the way it is. It doesn’t compete too hard against the competition. In return it’s advertising minutes are curtailed.

if it was truely independent it would not only cut costs but also take ad revenue from the rest of the stations just by being allowed to see 10or 12 minutes an hour versus the 6 minutes an hour it does now

Oh and as an added bonus it gives people who want to bash Rte a useful tool

Despite 2FM arguably getting more free press than any other radio station it’s now officially bottom of the heap in Dublin; being beaten by everyone including LyricFM.

I wouldn’t like to see them replaced by Gold on FM tbh, I still think there’s a need to do something (anything!) for under 25 consumers. There’s good people in 2FM but they’re not achieving their potential.

To summarize - the taxpayer is on the hook for 2FM and RTE Gold 😠 and paying the presenters wages.

This is not good for my health.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,237 ✭✭✭RoTelly

2FM advertising minutes were always curtailed, RTÉ did suggest increasing them at one point during the last 9 years, when they were pumping license fee revenue into it.

2FM was always supposed to be run on a cost neutral basis and perhaps even return a profit for RTÉ, so it could invest in other areas. It was the case it broke even via ad revenue until 2011. There was never any suggestion that they sell more advertising.

2FM should cut costs and aim to breakeven.

How much would be saved by dropping many of the co-hosts on shows, along with dropping Game On? How is it that Lyric FM can run on a lower budget, a largely music centric station?

I've said it before that RTE could be more aggressive with their radio ad selling.
