Yes. It does matter. Are you being intentionally obtuse, or do you not see the difference between VW and VW Group companies? If Tesla purchased all the other BEV companies outside of China and the Tesla Vehicles Group sold 10 times that of the VW Group, I doubt you would be as loose with the figures.

People buy brands, not holding companies. Most people who stick to one brand within the VW Group would never even consider another brand within that same group unless it was big step up in prestige. Many of these cars actually share the same platform and people still won't consider moving to a different badge.

The SEAT Tarraco is a Skoda Kodiaq. Even though they aren't prestige level cars, you wouldn't see Skoda owners rushing to the SEAT. Probably why you've likely never even heard of the Tarraco, even though it's around €7k less than than a Kodiaq. That's just the first example that comes to mind.

So, you can't lump VW BEV sales in with the entire BEV sales of every company within the VW group. It's an absurd method of comparison, as each company acts independently of the next. If you have to do that to make your point, then I say you've made your point. Just not the one you were trying to make.

A fair analysis - the VAG group is huge. Tesla is but one company.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,826 ✭✭✭maidhc

VW make all the cars and Volkswagen Ireland import all the brands and will be selling them directly next year. The point is getting lost in your diatribe, that VW are shifting more BEVs than Tesla in Europe, which they are, irrespective of the badge they shove on the bonnet.

I’m will aware of the tarraco btw. I tend not to forget the times I had to write to Volkswagen over a issue with a vehicle!

Do you even know what diatribe means? Show me where I attacked you. I made a coherent point and you have only given an opinion with no material backing. If you consider my first paragraph to be an attack, then please report me, as I didn't intend to offend your sensitivities if that is what has happened here. I'll take the full force of a ban if my comments are deemed threatening, or abusive.

Now, you obviously don't know the difference between VW Group and the many brands which operate independently of the VW Group, including the brand VW, so I will leave it there, as it is pointless discussing this topic with someone who simultaneously doesn't know the subject matter and doesn't care to understand more about it, as that would shed light on how wrong you are. Good evening.

I’m not sure how much you understand about corporate ownership structures tbf, but as it happens I think the core VW brand alone has outsold Tesla in Europe. Add in all the idenikit clones that all contribute to the bottom line of the same corporate entity and bobs your uncle… a company that was supposed to be going broke outselling what was the leading light of electrification!

If I am reading this right, you are looking down at somebody for driving a Toyota; instead of some crappy plasticky German keeping up with the Jones' SUV?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,149 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

No mickey does the looking down around here (although you appear to be making a reasonable effort yourself) I'm just questioning why, what do you drive Saul must be exotic?

The etron is German but crappy and plasticy it wasn't, although it's gone now.

    You are an angry man!

As an aside I think I only currently own one vehicle per ghosts restrictive understanding of “ownership”, a 23 year old Landcruiser J95 thati have had for over a decade.

I was coming home last night in it and I realised it is probably the closest to a perfect vehicle you could own (at least for a non city dweller): it has adequate power, can cruise at or above the motorway limit with ease, it has lots of space (never needed a removal van!) it’s big, but can still fit in a car park (if you take care) it’s surprisingly comfortable, you can drive it free of annoying “aids”, but still has useful technology like ABS, it can manage 30mpg which isn’t great, but ok and most importantly it will always get you where you need to go and back… even though the ice and floods us non Dublin people have to endure (pulled a fallen branch off the road once, waded through 3ft+ of water to get to school another time)

I know this is off topic a little… but there is no one correct answer to what is a good car and attacking various marques and models because of some perceived enlightenment is odd.

thats not the first time youve said that Mickey, again a not so subtle little wind up attempt, you are the only person either on here over what must be 20 years now or IRL who has described me as angry so ill assume the issue is you and not me.

An analogy came to earlier when you brought up watches, you are like the guy who comes into a seiko thread and sh!tes all over the guy who bought a new marine master because you have a rolex submariner (which would be bad enough and ive not once seen it in the watch forum) but it turns out you actually have a g shock which makes it even harder to understand.

I dont think anything you post is in good faith so ill leave you to it!

as to your last sentence i agree so why do you persist in doing it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,826 ✭✭✭maidhc

I don’t know Jack about watches, but was googling about an IWC portuguiser at one stage (that ultimately I couldn’t convince my self to buy). I only own a seiko in a drawer somewhere and a €20 casio I use for swimming!

No point engaging with that chap. Nothing but a wind up merchant with half baked stories and a bitter streak throughout. Oh and apparently we don’t get floods in Dublin 🤣 .

Would be great if we could get back on track..trading personal slights and insults becomes tiresome…..

Maybe just mute the Maidhc fellah folks- just a wind-up merchant obviously!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,647 ✭✭✭sk8board

I muted them all ages ago, you’d be amazed how cleaner a lot of threads get.

Back OT perhaps, but I was surprised to read that the big pay award to Musk actually only takes his ownership from 13% to 16%, I thought it’d be more.

It will go down a lot after he uses his shares to buy FaceBook 😂

Contrary to popular believe he couldn't afford it. The banks that underwrote the Twitter aquistion and still own that wouldn't load that again. They're unwilling to do a write down on that yet

The days of him doing large aquistions off share wealth are done. Meme stock doesn't count.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,075 ✭✭✭JOL1

Acquisition of Twitter (USD43b) was financed by a large cash injection by Musk ($20b) from sale of some tesla stock, and included also personal borrowings by MUSK ($6+b). These personal borrowings are modest relative to his wealth and borrowings were collateralised by pledge of Tesla stock worth many multiples of the amount borrowed. So any write downs of his borrowings does not arise.

His warchest of Tesla stock alone (13% or 16% with recent comp package — US$125 -155 bn) is certainly capable of raising funds should he wish to "go shopping" and raise funds for acquisitions.

To be fair it was widely reported, summarised and cited here for your edification

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acquisition_of_Twitter_by_Elon_Musk

Although regardless I would agree with you, he can't afford meta!

Your post suggested that “contrary to popular belief “ implying you know more, that his days of using his wealth for acquisition are over. Clearly his wealth (Tesla only part of it) could be leveraged to raise funds for future large acquisitions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,906 ✭✭✭✭listermint

He cant afford meta and wouldn't get backing to aquire it. He has zero credibility now to aquire something of that size and make it profitable at all. Are you arguing that he could produce a business plan for a return on that banks would swallow today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,777 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Lads, don't lose the run of yourselves 😂 I wasn't seriously suggesting he might buy Meta 😂😂😂

I don't even think Musk was seriously suggesting he buy Twitter, until he was.

True enough. But he got a social media platform (only the Lord and Elon himself know why), he doesn't need another one

And even if TSLA went $1000, and he sold all his shares, he still couldn't afford Meta…
