Do you have access to another wheel? Swap them out and see if the noise goes away

I was cleaning out my father’s shed recently and came across his old carbide cycle lamp. He said he used it in the late 1940’s but it was considered to be an antique then. Made by Joseph Lucas of Birmingham. He said it gave a lovely soft light. I must ask him how it faired in very wet weather and what did he use on the rear. His father had it before him and he reckons it dates from around 1900.

I think its a Lucas "Calcia Cadet", which they sold from around 1900 up to the late 1930s.

You'll need another bike to go with that lamp WA!

Another funny one that I get randomly. I sometimes (on the desktop browser) have a star to the left of the profile menu which brings me to followed threads, sometimes I don't. Nothing to do with whether there're any new posts - fire the site up on 2 different computers, one will have it, the other not

my wife was telling me this morning that at the horse show (she's not going this year) you see products come and go, sometimes in a faddy sort of way. this year there seems to be a focus on inflatable (i.e. airbag) rider vests - akin to the Hövding cycling helmet/collar - and in certain circumstances they'd make sense. apparently in some cross cross country events, they're mandatory now. they appear to work based on a tether rather than an accelerometer; once you come out of the saddle and yank the tether, it deploys.

but they're becoming much more common for kids and 'normal' riders; but my wife is very dubious about the wisdom of wearing something like that, in a context where there could be other riders (including kids) riding in the same arena, and you don't want the sound of one of these things going bang and creating a mass spooking of horses.

plus, she said she's seen videos where the rider is unseated, but manages to regain control, and land back in the saddle - but the airbag has deployed. apart from the expense of 'recharging' the vest, that could turn a recoverable spook into an unrecoverable one.

I'd imagine the tether system could get very messy if the rider forgets they have it attached and goes to routinely dismount. Presumably they have thought of that.

Nope, she mentioned that's a thing.

Didn't really know where this would belong, but I thought it might be useful for some, or at least give some ideas.

Had the idea to cycle the length of the Shannon, source to sea. Doing it on the bank doesn't seem to be viable, a lot of it doesn't even look walkable. So I suppose a combination of roads and greenways (where available) is the next best thing.

Can't find anything online relating to this, so before I sit down to try and plan a route, does anyone have any resources (or better again a GPX file 😀)

    A few things.

    1. What are your start and end points? The start point is agreed I think but where are you saying the "sea" is?
    2. End to end especially over long distance is a pain in the hole logistics wise; ask anyone who has attempted M2M solo.
    3. I'd imagine a 200/300km loop route from source would be much nicer.
    4. There are two audax Ireland river routes which I've done, while not very difficult they are harder than you might think.
    5. Once you have your start and end points just plug into cycle.travel and see what it spits out

    Thanks for the reply

    1. Start point is the Shannon Pot, or as close as I can get to it. End point is up for debate, depending on what works out best. Could be the Kilrush/Kilkee side of things, could be Foynes or Ballybunion side. I mean, I could even finish in Limerick City. Nice and easy way to get home, then.
    2. As above, if I finish in Limerick (or come back to Limerick) I have a transit hub that's easy enough to get home from. I could envision it as a two day trip, either b&b or camping.
    3. If you have such a loop, I'd be more than interested in having a look.
    4. Again, if you have a link or GPX file of either (or both) of those routes, that would be great.
    5. I did just that, and it gave me the route below. Follows the river until Carrick-on-Shannon, and then deviates. I can obviously pull the route closer to the river, but I was hoping someone had it done, so I didn't have to curate all those roads

I think Limerick would be by far the easiest end point.

I don't have any route for you, Shannon isn't on my radar at all. To avoid all the logistic mess, would a triangle from home via Canal to Shannon, cycle to Shannon pot and back roads home be better?

I've a 400km route like that just plotted which brings me on Barrow Way.north to canal, canal to Tullamore and backroads home.

I must just go and do it now, might do when schools are back

@Large bottle small glass thanks for those routes, much appreciated. Yes I think Limerick would be the easiest all right.

As regards your planned route above, I'm right on the Barrow Way, if you wanted a bit of company for at least part of it, pm me

Going to be in Dublin city relatively early tomorrow morning. Bringing the bike with me, and I was wondering if someone could post a Google pin of the actual start point here. From reading online, it seems that I have to go through an industrial estate or similar

Ah ok - so depending on whether you mean the Royal Canal greenway which starts in the docklands or whether you mean the Dublin Port Greenway which is short and skirts around the northern edge of the docks

Royal Canal Greenway Start = https://maps.app.goo.gl/2iXLTNiJjJ9NJAQh6

    Dublin Port Greenway = https://maps.app.goo.gl/5C2ipgqPY6rGRnwn9

Either way, enjoy the spin tomorrow.

We've found ourselves in Carlingford. Passed maybe half a dozen anti greenway signs getting here; one erected by the local sheep farming association. I wouldn't have thought a greenway posed a threat to sheep farmers...

PSA: the latest wahoo update has effectively bricked the V1 Bolt and Roam in case anybody goes buying a new bike computer like I very nearly did. Wahoo supposedly working on a fix.

Good article on Escape Collective (might be member only, though) explaining what happened.

Essentially, it seems like a programming mistake in counting GPS weeks rollover was the root cause.

For those few interested in such things

happened a colleague, but it didn't brick his device; it just gave him screwy info. claimed his ride was 172,000 hours long. which is 19.6 years!
