How much revenue is expected from the annoying ad pop-ups? Hope it's worth it because it's a much poorer user experience.

    Sustained personal abuse?

What about just personal abuse generally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 320 ✭✭Soc_Alt

It just shows how fcuked boards.ie is.

If you are not subscribed they make the site unusable with the pop ups.

Thats simply going to drive everyone away from the site. Not subscribe.

Again, this is the mismanagement that drove the site into the ground.

    Zero plan to change.

    RIP boards.ie

Depends. For instance, I've been abused routinely on the immigration thread. Nobody, as far as I'm aware, has been censored for it. I gave one smart-ass reply (not personal abuse, just a bit of smart-assery) to the poster abusing me, and I get a permanent ban. So the danger with "personal abuse" is that some mods, like Necro, will interpret any response to one of their protected posters as "personal abuse" while allowing the same poster to abuse others. If personal abuse is used to ban posters, it needs to be spelled out very clearly what that means, and should be used fairly.

Every few clicks, this is the scale of adverts that are showing up. And people aren't going to disable their ad blockers if it's this level of obnoxious.

I'm not getting that at all, just a relatively innocuous ad at one side of the page.

That boards ownership team can't even get enshittification right 😉 speaks volumes doesn't it.

Also, making an emotive appeal to the user base to save the "community" here when the owner is still belabouring under the assumption that this is still a viable a business? Is more than a touch disingenuous.

This is a website that has in the course of its last platform change, discarded a large proportion of its user base. The failures, usability and other issues all led a large portion of users to migrate away.

Now? The proposal is to keep flogging the remaining user base whilst giving an even poorer user experience.

That the penny regarding how easily websites & fora can atrophy hasn't dropped yet? Again, is an illustration of how a lack of nous that is bordering on naïvete.

When your product relies on attracting and retaining a user base of posters, who engage in discussions and write the content you hope drives site visits? Then you repeatedly seek new ways to alienate that cohort? It's not their fault when your poorly managed business fails.

Middle aged dads who joined boards in the naughties and teens will migrate to other platforms. Yes Boards was a community but, much of that community evaporated during the Vanilla migration. Even more pertinently, those folk have maintained methods of Comms outside boards, other fora, other platforms and whilst skinned Boards still has a little of the nostalgia that keeps some of us coming back?

When the skinned customisations go? Even that veneer of nostalgia does too. Even less reason to return.

A business that desperately needs a user base to pay subs to survive? Is not a business that has any hope of surviving when it's user base is constantly diminishing.

You’d just wonder how the heads running this site can be bothered trying to save it at all when you read the sh*te that the moaners are coming up with. It’s not like it’s a money making site. Nit-pickers who will neither pay nor feck off and leave it to those of us who want to be here. I don’t expect any favours for having subscribed. I’m just hoping we won’t lose something that’s v rare nowadays, i.e. a uniquely Irish forum of a lot of like-minded people. You can keep your twitter and the rest of the crazies’ infiltrated sites with their aggro and paranoia and demented agendas.

    JUST SAVE BOARDS !!!!

Can you try turning off cloudflare for a few days and see how the effects ad revenue.
They have made changes that I see maybe effecting ad revenue more than some google algorithm change.

I was going to subscribe but the full on ads for every link, every refresh put me off today. I felt like being bullied into it. I can't thank, post, make any click on the site without an ad. Whoever is responsible for this I think it's counter productive. No one likes to be forced into anything.

And all the €50 subs ad up. People saying so shouldn't be chastised. Between Laois Today (local news), Ancestry, My Heritage, Dating, VHI, an AVC, Irish Roots, Irish Newspaper Archive, GOAL etc my fortnightly Payslip gets a lot of cuts.

The timing of this is very sudden. Also do I trust it will be used properly. Everything is a bit ad hoc.

The site has good and bad memories for me. We're all trying to work out if it’s worth it for us. I often felt boards fell between 2 stools of amateurism and being a professional site with more coherent moderation. This site page flicking is going on since November 2024. That's not on. How someone didn't grab the bull by the horns and sort that is beyond me.

You'd wonder did they not know it was as bad as it was, or did they not care?

I haven't gotten around to it yet but I'll throw my 50 quid into the pot, for better or worse i'll be here to the end

Some of them must have known and used the site you'd imagine.

The ads today has turned me off big time. It's frustrating and hard on the eyes to post this evening.

Like everything you'll miss it sitting down for the Late Late etc. But in a few weeks the habit will be broken.

If you want to see what's being said about something or someone, you'll go to X.

I will genuinely miss posters I've grown to know, like yourself.

I'd say one thing. If you want to save boards, get rid of the new ads ASAP. As others said it's going to backfire. It feels coercive. We'll make the site unusable unless you join rationale.

**** 'X' (Twitter). I loved it for years but it quickly went down the toilet under Musk, and I felt I needed to close my account. It actually brought me back here - I had drifted from Boards after the Vanilla disaster.

If Boards goes under, I think I will simply be done with social media and forums.

By the way, how can a forum like Briskoda survive where this cannot?

    https://briskoda.net/

For the technically minded, what type of forum is this? I.e. is this xenforo or what is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,099 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

I know X is **** But after scanning you might get the odd sensible post😅

Boards for me is middle aged, centrist views, middle class. Most of us seems to be in that cohort.

I haven't come upon any Phillip O'Dwyer, Lahive, Blighe, Pepper type viewpoints or threads. That's to boards' everlasting credit for me. The lack of extremes on both wings.

Most of the forums I regularly visit need little to no moderation.

Whereas this thread alone probably needs a full time mod because it's been infiltrated by the usual headbangers from the political forums (virtually none of whom have subbed to keep the site alive). Pages and pages of crap about mods and bias...

these one page ads seem to be a desparate last minute attempt to force people to sub. last minute cash grab perhaps before the place shuts for good…

    no way Jose !

This thread, naturally, has the highest number of paid sub posters.

You go across the site to weather, soaps, sport and you see very few subs.

There are very few headbangers on the Fair City thread or The Summer Weather Discussion😅 So it's not terribly accurate to portray people who haven't subbed as being headbangers from the political thread with gripes against mods. For whatever reason, a large swathe of solid users, across the threads haven't engaged with the message or are ignoring it.

Yet another poster who has a banner underneath begging posters to "save boards" happy to denigrate other posters outlining the issues and why they won't subscribe.

Try being part of the solution rather than the problem.

    Time is ticking.

I held back subscribing to see how things would go. I was all in favour of it first and then shortly after the announcement there was a decision to turn CA into 4chan.

It was only when I saw that unofficially reverse over the last week I signed up for the year.

There are people who want more moderation as well as the folks who want less in CA etc.

The site is much more than that though.

    • Sports forum: Excellent for reading about any sport you are interested in. Soccer, GAA, Rugby, Golf, F1 etc.
    • After Hours: Can be random but has it's very good moments.
    • Travel: Great to read threads and get inspired about visiting new places.
    • Food: Inspired me to cook more and try new recipes.
    • Athletics: Nothing to contribute but was so informational especially during the Olympics and even the last weekend Irish Championships.
    • Infrastructure: Great to get updates from people who have knowledge or updates on projects. (Bus Connects, Metrolink Road projects etc.
    • Renewable Energies: One of the best run forums on the site full of posters with a similar interest and always helpful.

Could list 10+ more but I am sure you get the picture. I would hate to lose the site over the whole CA moderation debate.

Would keeping only half the site open ie the busier threads like Gigs/After Hours etc

Not looking forward to the complication of Redit

It seems to me that the people most vocal about moderation in CA (specifically the Immigration thread) are those on the minority viewpoint chafing that their "antics" were no longer getting other posters warned or threadbanned, but dressed up as a lack of balanced posting/victimisation.

I haven't been on much in the last few days, but if the more relaxed policy that was being implemented has now been reversed (officially or otherwise), this can only be a negative thing!

Having caught up this evening we have one serial poster who it turns out isn't even living in Ireland but posts repeated walls of texts that clearly aren't reflective of the reality on the ground, and another who has been (rightly) banned for telling people to get out of their ma's boxroom among other nonsense.

If this is the "standard" of counterargument then no wonder they're complaining/being called out on it TBH.

Sadly, this is the most likely outcome. Those that have experienced the shambollically biased and sometimes non-sensicle moderating in CA (in my case because some of my views don't conform with theirs) are not going to pay to be treated like that. So many bridges have been burned with long time regular posters (the very posters Boards desperately now need to subscribe) and the under 600 subscribers so far is an indictment of that behaviour that doesn't surprise me.

No one is looking for a 4chan unmoderated forum - they just want common sense and moderators to be held accountable for ridiculous decisions, which almost never happens.
