    The JEWS!.png

Grand, head in the sand. "The Jews" is just one really weird example. It goes on and on for days. Weird. And, only in CA. From the same bunch. Like I said, good luck getting money with this swill.

In the old days a company got your card details and then processed that on a payment platform.

The name and address had to match

Up to about 7/8 years ago you'd still need card address

But payment security has moved on a hugely since then. Also payment responsibility has changed.

I can process a payment on an online terminal with just a card number and expiry date. Absolutely no other details required - however, I have full accountability for the transaction and if there was a query it is immediately deducted until I can give proof that it was genuine.

The merchant processer would also have done a check on me before allowing my systems take a payment like that.

Using stripe as both holder of information and merchant processer the only information a merchant can see is the first 6 and last 4 digits of the card and the card type and name on the card. And if it's done online and normal security processes are adhered to, the merchant no longer has to prove the payment was genuine. (Delivery of goods/service is a different matter)

So you could sign up with a visa enabled gift card and put Ronald McDonald as the name

    Good information.

A subscriber provides email address, card number and a name (which must be the name attached to the card) when subscribing

Management clearly does not receive your card number, but (based on information on this thread) it seems they do get your email address and name - but it seems it is possible to get some kind of gift card with a dummy name.

Meta, Tiktok, Google and Amazon etc probably know everything about people tbf. A website having some of your details is hardly ground breaking news.

That is not the point. The point is that you have the right to choose to whom to divulge it.

I've subscribed so I don't need to see the annoying red banner anymore. Can it disappear for subscribed users or at least an x where it can be closed?

Hey there, it is possible to make site messages dismissible. However, that option would then be available for every single user. We would much prefer to have these site messages fully visibly for a while longer.

Given the fact that the site faces closure if the funding targets are not achieved, it would be a good idea if these sticky thread titles had a bit more urgency about them.

I know there is the red banner, but you probably need to consider pop-ups too.

You will need broader media engagement getting in touch with liveline, tech and general media and even sympathetic Irish influencers to push your message. The messaging needs to be relentless tbh

Given the slow take up in subs it’s not looking promising. You might have got more if people where to get money back if the site closed. Like a kickstarter because right now there’s not much incentive to buy a 12 month sub when in all likelihood the site will be gone by end of year.

    +1 on all of this.

Boards need to use social media to push the cause as well, I know it's seen as the enemy, the amount of lapsed Boards users out there might see the message and come back to give back to the community we all once loved.

Ive asked in the other thread so gona post here also.

Whats the story with grants for Boards?

There seems to be plenty of grant aid available for all sorts of nonsense where Im from that's nowhere near as useful as Boards.

I appreciate taking funding can lead to questions re being an independent platform but these are rock hard times looking at the current sub count. Needs must.

With 89 days to go I imagine grants will be no use if the application process is cumbersome.

More awareness will help. I wonder do the original owners every look at this and think I can't let it die.

It's a pipe dream that someone will buy it up and return it back to it's community roots but I can't see that happening either.

Hi Mike, no joy, I'm afraid, all I'm getting is a blank page. I'm currently roaming, if it makes a difference?

There should be a countdown timer on the red banner to reflect the urgency!

A countdown to what though? An arbitrary date that has been set? Is the 100k figure to clear a specific debt or for ongoing expenses? Surely if it's ongoing expenses then that figure is needed for say a 12 month period and wouldn't just be needed by the end of this 90 day period.

And if the target is met, what then? Is this needed every year? Is this something that is needed as a one-off and that's it? Or is it needed every year? Will we be getting emergency messages every year?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 26,309 Mod ✭✭✭✭Loughc

I imagine €100k would be needed every year to cover the running costs. So yeah it'll be a constant battle really unless they find another revenue source, which is as bout as likely as me winning the Euromillions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,132 ✭✭✭DopeTech

yeah even the donation page is not really clear what you are paying for. They should really admit defeat and pull the plug sooner rather than taking everyone’s money before switching the servers off.

If a person pays for a monthy or 6 monthly subscription, when the next payment is due, are you reminded to pay or is it automatically taken from the bank card they used for initial payment ie. Is it an auto-newal system ?

Reason I ask, is in the past I have found auto-renewal systems very difficult to cancel.
