I would go as far as saying that new front three (assuming we get Sesko obviously) represents one of the best windows I can remember.

Cunha and Mbeumo are PL proven and the perfect age... Just about to hit their prime, hopefully. Sesko, a bit more of a gamble, but the market isn't flooded with number 9's.

I just hope we keep Hojlund as a backup, we need two strikers at the club pushing each other on.

If we get a CM and GK... That would be beyond my wildest expectations. I would have thought that they would have been next Summer's business.

While I wouldn't turn down a CM, I do fear that we mightn't get that one right. I just think we might end up signing someone to suit playing alongside Bruno, and given Bruno's age, that's not a great reason to be signing someone. I would be ok with seeing how Mainoo can develop this year, and if he progresses well, make the signing next year to be his long term partner. There's also a part of me that wants to see Amorim prove his worth and figure out our midfield problem for himself.

Onana is terrible but with that front three, his mistakes should far less costly this year.

What getable budget CM and GK would folks accept for United?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭Quags

Just put Heaton in goal and aim for CM, the list above has gettable players. Onana is a liability and Bayındır isnt up to much.

I think Amorim will have to get on with improving Ugarte (bought a year ago), improving Mainoo (Starting for England a year ago at the euro's), getting the best he can from Casemiro (looking fit compared to a year ago) and utilising Bruno as an attacking player from midfield (United now have Cunha and Mbeumo to mean he is not needed as the 10).

Ugarte and Mainoo are young so should be coachable. United need him to get those two performing so that they can replace Casemiro next summer and have a good budget available to do it. The saving on his wages next year will be eaten up quick if it means they need to buy two or three midfield players over the next 12 months.

    Goalkeeper before midfielder next imo.

Its time for Mainoo to step up.

I'd certianly be expecting we should be ok at '8' with Bruno and Mainoo (and, imo, Mount). At 6 i'd only trust Ugarte at all, and many don't. I think we could/would move collyer if we get a CM in, with just Casemiro left there as of now - and if we are gonna buy a CM it should be a DM and it should be someone who can look at replacing Ugarte.

He's just not a DMF, IMO. All his best moments have been in offensive positions.

If a quality keeper is within grasp, the club should sign him. But the way teams are cutting through the midfield, any defense and keeper would struggle.

I think Martinez is worth a go in DMF, when he's fit, if nobody is signed in that position. He's a brilliant defender, but also sees a pass as good as anyone in the team.

Currently on hols in Portugal, just booked tickets to see Al Nassr play tomorrow night in Estadio Algarve. Never seen Ronaldo in the flesh so couldn't turn down the chance now even if it is for Al Nassr

With the money already spent I'd say they won't be splashing the cash on someone long term in midfield. Douglas Luiz is supposedly in talks with Forest and wonder if it's worth trying to sign him short term.

If anything happens to Ugarte, which as Mitch pointed out many have issues with we're fucked if Casemiro has to step up. The lad runs in slow motion like he's got weights holding him down.

Collyer should be sent on loan. Needs to get some serious minutes into him given he's missed a big chunk of his development years. This is his last year as an U21s player and from next summer on he'll be taking up a squad space. Think he needs to go show he's going to be worth hanging onto or at least gain some experience that we could sell him.

You would have to imagine the club will look to move on one of hojund or zirzkee now.

Maybe Ugarte with a proper functioning midfielder unlike Bruno alongside him would manage the middle. Bruno doesn't operate well as a midfielder, he's too loose and leaves too much to do for his midfield partner

I would be very surprised if Casemiro didn’t start over Ugarte when fit, particularly against ‘lesser’ sides.

Ugarte was dropped for the UEL final. Casemiro is in a different stratosphere when it comes to distribution.

i dont think we need to, unless its to raise cash for a CM or GK. like, we will be getting injuries this season regardless of no european football.

i'd rather send chido on loan.

You'll need both as back up I think given they both have different styles as CFs. Zirkzee gives you the option of changing things up and Hojlund should give up the option of bringing fresh legs on to continue playing with a number 9 at CF.

Should look to get Chido some senior experience with a loan. Too inexperienced to rely on him to come off the bench regularly and while he's still 17 I think he's wasted just hanging around with the reserves or 4th choice for the full season.

CM a much bigger priority for me. I would even say walk away from Sesko now - if it meant the club could 100% deliver a top CM this window. Our GK options are clearly not great, but probably Heaton could do a job for us for one season anyway. Then just make GK the priority next Summer.

On Mainoo, he just isn't the front foot defensive midfielder Amorim will need playing in this system. And I doubt he has the athleticism to play that role.

He's a player with excellent qualities, but playing in this system under this coach, he feels a bit like the wrong guy/wrong place at the wrong time

Casemiro might be better with Cunha and Mbuemo? Both track back and tuck in pretty well which should reduce the amount of ground Casemiro needs to cover. Also, Sesko is very good in the air and should be a major upgrade on Hojlund in holding the ball up in general, so the ball should stick in the final third a lot better which will relieve pressure on Casemiro and our defense in general.

Might still be a significant problem but maybe more manageable with these new players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,844 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

His distribution might be in a different stratosphere but the lad runs like he's dragging a sled behind him. Think Casemiro starting you'd want to pair him with Ugarte so he's got someone who can run beside him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,666 ✭✭✭DataDude

I assume the ‘plan’ is to play a higher press to avoid the chasm of space in midfield that we’ve had for a few years now. That has killed Casemiro.

Not sure how that plan will work if Maguire and De Ligt are getting minute though.

Ultimately I’d think/hope neither Ugarte or Casemiro play much and we sign a new MF with a bit of legs who can play ball. Fit them in beside Mainoo or Bruno. If we don’t it’ll be a long year.

forgot about that. maz, onana, mbuemo, amad.

so potentially these 4 missing for 21 December 2025 – 18 January 2026 (plus a few days either side for travel and warmup games).

Some unreliable rumours that we've contacted Brighton for Baleba.

Trash source first but now there's one from a source in Cameroon and L'Equipe

Exactly the kind of midfielder we need but can't see it happening. Brighton will want silly money for him

would love that. would brighton be looking for caicedo type money, or something more like 60m?

he is only on 12.5k per week. so maybe tiniest chance if you could get him for 50k per week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭Cotts72

You'd have to imagine they'd look for 60-80m unless we've some player that can be added to the deal

As it stands the midfield two is

Ugarte/ Casemiro neither the solution for a defensive midfielder. Ideally we get a DM in next but likely to come down to availability & funds.

Bruno, have doubts he can play in a two man midfield, especially against the better sides. His natural instinct is to get into the '10' positions. Unless he can redefine his game somewhat like Scholesy did and sit back more to control the game we are very weak against strong running midfielders.

Mainoo is similar to Bruno, more of a forward moving midfielder. Positional limitations aside, I believe the club see him as Bruno's understudy/ replacement (as I expect) from next Summer.
