    @Borstan "I saw it on X"

That in itself is a reason not to take it seriously? + New account posting as well?

    Pure bull.

Because the kind of rubbish that is posted there eventually feeds into everything and usually from the same posters.

As you can see in the last few hours there are accusations of racist dogwhisling, arguments over whether Reddit is left leaning or not, etc etc., here in Feedback.

It's off topic as you say, but it doesn't stop the usual cranks from trying to get the last word.

And just saying it's not doesn't make it false either. If you can't see it there you certainly won't see it here, as boards is far closer to the centre than r/Ireland. Some days you could confuse it for r/Palestine tbh.

It does when you can't be bothered to provide any proof.

Anyway, this is well off topic. Let's leave it there.

Reddit does lean left in comparison with boards in fairness, but I think that's as much to do with the demographics - which is younger than boards - and the way that Reddit works that tends to amplify the popular opinions. That's not to say there isn't "conservative" or right wing opinions to be found there, there is - more so lately too - but a casual read of CA here and r/Ireland there makes it obvious that there's a bit of a generational difference between the two places IMO.

Though I don't think it's a conspiracy, just a reflection of the cohort who use it. Tbh I think boards could do with a bit less conservative and Reddit could do with being a bit less "right-on".

I live in the UK and I've had to unsub from r/unitedkingdom, r/europe and r/ukpolitics because they're full of snarling racists typing the same dreck over and over again.

Fair enough, I can only base my opinion on r/Ireland, as I don't know anything about those other subs.

Not sure if it's just me but I'm getting full page ads that I need to close when clicking between pages since this morning. If this is a way of trying to get people to subscribe for an ad-free version, you will have a subscriber only site as it is really **** annoying and if it continues for another day or so, that will be that for boards for me

Most Irish people are sympathetic towards Palestine and in my experience, the Irish public are a bit further left than people in countries like the UK and the US. Maybe r/Ireland is only left wing if you're guzzling a lot of US and UK media.

To be fair, you would consider anyone who isn't extremely left wing, and utterly unquestioning in regard to immigration, to be a "snarling racist" - the fact that you are considered an extreme outlier on Reddit of all places says it all.
Sometimes, it is actually you, and not everyone else.

And you couldn't be bothered to reply to my point in a polite manner earlier on, an XL bully dog would be more friendly.

I've never come across you before but sounds like others have, and you've the same demeanor with them.

As a mod, I'd expect you to lead from the front, set a positive example and not carry that aggressive tone across.

89 days left to go on this site and this thread forever going around in circles arguing on points that aren’t relevant to the topic at hand.

Despite what mods and some posters are saying, these points ARE relevant. The site is dying, and is unlikely to be rescued, just because the site management and mods don't want to admit their actions are a major cause of that, doesn't make it so (as a poster above might say). The reason I and many others won't sub is because of these issues, whether you like it or not. Have a look at the Reddit thread on Boards - a huge number of posters, many of whom are very long term Boards members, quite a few ex-mods, saying the same thing. This ship will go down with the absentee captain and his loyal crew blaming everything except the fact they ran it into an iceberg.

You have stated that you want your account closed so I wouldn't be worrying about it too much.

Exactly the kind of answer I would have expected, unfortunately.

Your own will be closed shortly whether you like it or not.

I think there's some relevance if Boards is indeed not long for this world while other sites continue to grow but I think it's been a staple of the place for a long time that minds are very rarely changed here.

On the plus side the bouncing pages are less frequent but I do agree with your thinking about pushing people away.

I've completely forgotten the password of my original account from 2002 to 2009 and the email address for it is also long gone.

How do I get it reset I wonder, I'd like to login as it again and see what I was saying way back then, and the search function is not great here.

    I asked this last week.

Is there an amnesty on forum bans for those who subscribe? I'm banned from one forum and it's a block to me subscribing.

The situation can't be that desperate if a would-be annual subscriber can be ignored.

I've noticed you cleverly avoid posts that question your stances and do the whole snarky "I'm better than you" post without actually engaging with facts. Embarrassing.

Presumably subscribers will be expected to follow the rules the same as everyone else. They are hardly going to allow people to pay to be unbanned and do what they like?

I literally just asked you a question and you decided to post snarky comment for some reason. I'm genuinely at a loss as to what you think "facts" are.

You're missing the point. Why would I subscribe when I have been been wrongly banned from a forum?

How many others will not subscribe for the same reason?

Either we're serious here or we're not. I'm defacto blocked from subscribing.

If they are being civil, and not breaking any rules, why should they not be allowed to debate?

How far do you go with this though? I've seen posters defend violent white nationalism and blame women for getting raped. Should those be allowed? If so, where do you draw the line?

I'm not saying do or don't, just that it can get quite messy when deciding what opinions to platform. It helps immensely that in your specific example, the people supporting the Kremlin tend to just dump crap here which makes the bad faith obvious.

I guess I'm being nosey and it isn't my business really, so you can say nothing in response if you want - but why exactly are you closing your account?

If it's about data protection/ anonymity concerns going forward or if/when the site 404's permanently, then, yeah, I get that to an extent. Do I trust boards with my data... I'm not too sure about that, but I can accept the risk, for now, but I completely understand if others don't.

But if you're shutting your account because of the style of debate/ bias - isn't, for all of its faults - and boy does it have faults - isn't boards still the best of a bad bunch? Maybe I'm being naive here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,812 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

In your opinion, you're wrongly banned. I honestly don't think it's putting off a huge amount from subscribing and I'd equally say unbanning such posters is as likely to put people subscribing.

    Good question.

I'm closing it for two reasons - firstly, I think the site is going to disappear without warning when the owner/s realise they are not going to raise the money they hoped for, and then who knows where our data will end up? It sounds to me, from the amount of money they are trying to raise (given how little it would actually cost to keep the site going) that there is a desperation for funds outside of what the site needs - this may mean that the site, and all it contains, will be available to the highest bidder once the site folds. I have considered potentially buying the site myself, I have an idea or two on how it could be self-sufficient, and I think it will go for small money once they run out of funds. Secondly, I have been permanently banned from the forum I most frequently posted in on here, so not much point staying. There was a glorious week there where the site was modded relatively fairly, but, as I suspected, it couldn't last. Too many egos, and too many mods who's entire lives are this site.

Aside from inconsistent and sporadic posting on this site what have you done to get subscribers?

The call could easily go out on national radio (free of charge as many people have posted or heard of boards of the last 25 years)

It could be classed as a story of national interest, could be pitched to newspapers,tv,radio as an example of the changing face of the Internet, could be done as a nostalgia piece, could throw in a few funny story's etc.At the end of any of these pieces could be the call to subscribe.

Has any of this happened or did you just throw up a post on your own dying website and hope for the best?

The above is a perfect example of why I don't think I'll be subscribing at this time.

The disastrous move to Vanilla, the very one sided bias in relation to modding, the leadership of the site in general have been a shambles.

I will miss Boards more than I realise,I'd love to see a positive campaign gaining a bit of momentum (whilst simultaneously demonstrating some smarts in the owners) I'd happily subscribe in a case like that.

The damp squib, half arsed, sticky post begging bowl was in fact the last straw for me.
