Most people’s disposable income can afford alot more then €6 a month. Nobody subscribing is asking/demanding for those who can’t afford to subscribe to subscribe and nobody is even saying non subscribers should not have access to the site. So the point is irrelevant.

I wouldn’t disagree with your point on government throwing a few quid at it but they only support something they will get alot of votes for , like throwing loads of funds at local GAA clubs.

Where will everyone go to complain about boards and mods when boards shuts down in 89 days is all I wonder.

It's not a lot. But it baffles me that in the month since they have announced this the message still isn't on the homepage on desktop. Mobile sure, but desktop it's still not there.

This is a resource for all, not just "native Irish".

This is one major issue, no matter the subject thread many people just want to air their own personal grievances like immigration, trans rights etc, turns a lot of people away from engaging.

It needs to be paid for. It's very simple and your racist dogwhistle doesn't change that.

Few things baffle me at this stage. In fact the thing that baffles me more is when people get animated when something that seems obvious to them is not being done. We are all flawed and I can speak from somebody who runs my own small business; there are things I don’t do, that are quite simple, that would make things easier for me.

Doesn’t make everything you say wrong or even wrong to say it. The limit of my support is posting here and subscribing so maybe I’m part of the problem. But it doesn’t have to be some big conspiracy or that we are being conned , it can simply be the people trying to navigate it are doing their best, flaws and all.

It’s easy to forget there’s people at the end of every post made.

That ''native Irish'' thing did seem a bit strange alright.

Mind you, perhaps I just missed the memo but presumably boards.ie subscription is also open to worldwide users, some of whom would be Irish expats?
Is there any way that we could try giving it a push somehow in those markets.

I agree in retro with you, realistically, it would be very difficult to secure Government funding, especially as the site might now be considered 'niche' compared to 10 or 15 years ago. I'm not sure what specific criteria would need to be met, but it would be fantastic to see support, considering this site is a goldmine of real-time discussions and debates on historical events in Ireland and abroad over the past 30 years.

My point is that Irish people, both at home and abroad, have been using this website for decades, that’s a well-known fact. It’s been a part of a generation’s upbringing, and many continued using it even after emigrating abroad for good. Not everything has to be read as a negative or hidden message.

It’s a pity that the post on the Ireland reddit forum about this essentially crapped on Boards and its general userbase, painting them as horrible people. It could have actually encouraged users abroad to contribute, given Reddit’s large international reach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,421 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

Your message wasn't a hidden one at all when you used the term "native Irish" and followed it up with "the government throwing money at hotel scams".

    Good posts.

While I acknowledge the ownership don't inspire confidence and have definitely made a few poor management decisions e.g. moving to Vanilla (never mind the suggestion of rowing back to vanilla Vanilla, which may also kill the site), I think we have to recognize what is being said to us now, which seems to be there is 90 days to reach a subscriber target, after which the site will probably close down.

It would be tragic to not get to that 2k mark, and I'm surprised there haven't been more people willing to drop €6 a month, which I would think should be affordable for bulk of users.

If the worst comes to pass, at least I will have a clear conscience and can say I did my part.

@Boards.ie: Odhran & @Boards.ie: Mike minor nitpick on the https://keepboardsalive.com/ site, I'd change the <title> value on the site from "Keep Boards Free" to "Keep Boards Alive", as the reality is that free would suggest you don't want people spending money, when we want to encourage that right now :)

Any chance of using referral links to drive a bit of income? These are not allowed currently in Bargain Alerts but editing posted bargains in the likes of amazon thread to a boards.ie referral link might be a way of driving some income. Bit of work involved but its one of the most viewed forums on here

Signed up now and hope the site stays alive. Its given me great reading over the years and still does

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,437 ✭✭✭Esse85

It's definitely not an affordability issue for people who don't/won't sign up.

When people have got something for free in the past, to then being asked to put their hand in their pocket for an inferior product/service with an unknown directionless future, that's the primary reason I believe people won't put their hand in their pocket.

They're reasoning is logical and not everyone will share the same emotional attachment as others on here. Some have been verbally attacked, made to feel like crap by other posters, even by mods etc as a result, many are indifferent now based on their previous experiences on here, and the membership stats back up that claim.

It's dumb posts like that which put people off from putting their hands in their pockets. Keep it up, you have about 3 months of runway left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,214 ✭✭✭yagan

If people don't pay then what was once free simply won't exist anymore.

I've been meaning to subscribe but I'm reluctant to when I see so many horrible people being allowed to reiterate lies on the Trump and Ukraine discussions.

They're not interested in debate, but only spamming the discussion endlessly. I don't want to fund boards if that acceptable.

And the vast vast majority of members are fine with that, as seen by their decision, not to contribute financially.

"Im not subbing because someone made me feel like sh!t once"

How can this even be remedied? Everyone gets a personal mod for when someone hurts their feelings to the exact degree they feel is unacceptable? Chr!st if I packed in my Boards account every time someone had a go at me or a mod threw me out of a thread Id have left years ago. Thicker skin required. If you're indifferent because of personal grievances and probably not going to sub thats fine but why clog up this thread for those who want to know the current state of play and could potentially sub? Its bizarre. Starting to think some posters want this place to fail due to some umbrage they've taken and are hanging onto forever.

When the house is on fire, nit picking about what colour to paint the extension is not helpful.

The priority has to be putting out the fire or in this instance generating enough cash to continue as a going concern. Plans for the future can be thrashed out if the first goal is reached.

This simply isn't true. There's a lot of reasons for Boards' decline but the state of Reddit, X and others disprove this statement.
