Just back from Camping Les Trois Vallees in Argeles-Gazost in the Pyrennes. No beach but has the mountains (much better IMHO). Lively, excellent kids clubs, onsite facilities are very good, and a few minutes walk to the town. Second time there. Tends cooler than elsewhere so think mid-20s (though did have 30+ in early July). Obviously can rain at anytime.

Hi, wondering if anyone could advise on fuel stations around the Vendee area. Looking for info on cash payments and pre authorisation requirements, ideally would prefer to just pay cash for fuel we use but have had issues with this before around Brittinany. Ended up with 2x150 charges on card that weren't refunded for approx 10 days. Any chains that don't require this/have English screens at pump/accept cash or tips in general greatly appreciated please. Thanks in advance.

I know we paid in cash at a Super U near Talmont-Saint-Hilaire

haven't seen any pumps that accept cash bar manned stations which are becoming few and far between (mostly supermarkets), if you have a credit card you would be better off using that or Revolut would probably get the chargeback quicker. If you're insisting on using cash, you're probably looking at small random stations which are generally more expensive or when the supermarket ones are manned.

https://www.prix-carburants.gouv.frHere’s a good website that’s shows fuel stations and prices. I guess you could look at street view on google maps to see if they might be manned.

Good idea as you can search for food or non-food stores attached to petrol stations. Those will take cash.

We got stung with the fuel a few years back and have paid cash ever since. However, this year, all the kiosks in the Super/Hyper U's are closed up.

On two we visited, there was a machine where you can pay cash for a voucher using bank notes. You then bring the voucher back to your pump. The voucher has two codes. The pump will prompt you to put in each code - apologies as I can't remember the sequence.

I suggest pull in to the car park without taking up a spot and just have a look for the machine. The first one we saw has English instructions on it and it was easy use.

Bump on this, if anyone is in Le Pin Parasol tomorrow and you're around the newer pool area, could you check if there are any spaces in the Camper Aire which is beside the entrance near the newer pool area?

If there are free now, there's no guarantee they're not booked.

Would you not just email or phone the campsite?

First come first served in the Aire

@mr_edge_to_you Appreciate you checking earlier, we weren't sure about coming the whole way from Cherbourg this evening but we made it and it saves any driving tomorrow. Hope my answer above didn't seem a bit curt, it was a very brief pause in a more or less non stop trek from Cherbourg but we're here now and I have a glass in front of me :)

We are landing in Cherbourg on Sunday evening at 7:00 pm and travelling to Granville where we will stay for the first night.

Is there likely to be anywhere available to get food at that time on a Sunday evening (either supermarket, or casual dining place)? Even McDonalds?

    Thanks.

What I do is to put my route into Google maps and then use the search on route function to search for a McDonalds - it shows all of the McDonalds and I pick the most convenient one.

Most petrol pumps have language options. Some supermarkets do have options to pay at a kiosk after getting fuel.

    Theres segregated lanes for this.

Curiously I find using different pumps in the same station that only some will accept my Irish credit card.

mc Donald’s might be up your only bet. Supermarkets only open till 1 or 2 and some don’t even open on Sundays. There’s a McDonald’s just off the roundabout up near auchan supermarket there’s a burger king too a bit down the road one of those are your likely only option.

I wouldnt admit defeat and go all-in for McDonalds just yet! The Western side of Cherbourg itself would be a good option, its a busy administrative and port town and will have food offerings at 8pm. It's easy to access off the boat and has good parking in the area.

Don't judge me, but we often stop off in Buffallo grill. Its a weird tacky place, but the kids love it and service is quick if you just want somewhere to stop off quickly with kids before or after the ferry. Its also not far off your route and you can park outside.

We stopped in Buffalo Grill in Saint Lo this year on the way home, a nostalgia stop for us. We used to stop into Buffalo Grill in Calais at the end of 1000km+ drives from the far south, and it was glorious. This was before kids, when we would do mad mileage to go to the Alps, Pyrenees, Lake Garda. But they liked it this year, and it's no more expensive than McDonald's

Here 2 weeks now in the Vendée. Have been at supermarkets in St Gille CdV, St Hilaire dR and St Jean dM - the supermarkets no longer have manned kiosks.

You okay cash Inn advance to buy a voucher. Otherwise use your card and they seem to put a block on it.

Hi everyone. Just wondering if any companies hire campervans you can take to France from Ireland on the ferry. Not sure if it stacks up cost wise but just looking into it as an option for 2026.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭cscook

No idea what the prices would be, but right now on the road to Fermoy I'm behind a campervan saying "rent me". Company is roadsurfer.com .At a quick glance it looks as if you can take it to anywhere in Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,153 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

It probably would cost a fortune considering the price of them for a week or two in Ireland. Probably better off flying into France and hiring from there. There's a few companies around St. Malo that do it but wouldn't know the rates or terms etc.

First time going in two weeks time with a 3 year old and a 5 year old and pregnant wife. Any tips?

Sailing to roscoff and staying in Port de de plaisance. First time so said I wouldn't go too far south. I have AA breakdown cover but I haven't applied for the crit air yet will I be in trouble now?

Also what's the story with headlights? My car has matrix lights do I need to do anything for them? I don't plan on driving at night!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭TrailerBob

I feel I'm in a position to answer this as we did our France trip last year while Mrs Bob was 7 months pregnant on our 3rd, with the others similar ages.

On the holiday, be realistic with plans. Limit walking to an extent. Keeping the two kids happy at pool/playground is invaluable. If the older child is happy to go to kids club, that also helps dramatically. It's definitely something that can be enjoyable, but it is a holiday where Daddy is on full time, so enjoy that!

Headlights, I wouldn't worry about it. For years I put the beam converters on my Landcruiser, but mainly because the headlights are so high up on that, and we did do long motorway blasts at night. The last two trips in a Rav4 and Peugeot , the converters have stayed in the glovebox, and never fitted. Im not even sure if those work with matrix units Don't lose sleep over it.

Crit Air only applies in the major cities, the nearest to your holiday being Rouen, you won't be going there... so you don't need it.

Mostly enjoy the holiday, and take each day as it is. Best laid plans may change but there's always another option. Have a good time.

If you have matrix headlights, take a look in the options menu (or google/AI it), you'll find an option to switch them over. No need for converters.

Just for anyone who maybe over there with Eurocamp/Mervilla Parcs. I've just received my voucher for travel in three weeks time and on reading through it, one section says that a refundable security deposit of €150 is required by either cash or card.

I was with Eurocamp last year and I somehow don't recall having to pay this. is this a new thing?

    Thanks.

I think it’s becoming the norm. From speaking to people on site, staff no longer visit your cabin when you leave unless you choose the cleaning option and rely on the next client to inform them of any issues. For this reason I would recommend taking pictures and videos of the cabin when you arrive and then again when you leave, including outside, bbq etc
