I just turned on the F2, why is Dunne so far back? did he have a stop go penalty in the pit?

Pourchaire took four attempts to win the championship, Drugovich took three. Bortoleto did it in his rookie year That's why they're sitting on the sidelines and he's in F1.

Dunne started 9th and finished 9th in the end he was as far back as 14th but that was due around 6 other drivers not having made a stop at the point going long on the mediums for the alternate strategy, I think if Dunne started on that alternate strategy he would have finished higher today

Their strategy might have worked if it hadn't been for the two VSCs that effectively neutered them. All the alternate strategy guys got a rest for their tyres so they could go a bit deeper before pitting for softs while everyone who started on softs couldn't take full advantage from them.

F2 leadership specifically the creepy Bruno Michel have it out for the 2 best F1 prospects Dunne and Lindlblad. As Dunne said in his press conference, not deploying the start stop on a rolling start is actually safer than doing so. Whats more is the stewards did have the option to be lenient and not penalise due to the fact it had no bearing on the race whatsoever, or fine the team. They elected to rob Dunne of masterclass win in tough conditions. They knew the championship was all but over if Dunne took those points, as someone mentioned he'd be way out on top if it weren't for the stewards

Now you have Michel fawning over Fornaroli, a guy who won no races to clinch the F3 title in his second year and only 1 race in his whole junior career before that. Now he's winning the F2 championship thanks to the stewards. He of course comes from a wealthy Italian family, money and power talks.

Thankfully for Dunne, McLaren and F1 teams clearly see he is the fastest and most exciting driver on the F2 grid so it doesn't really matter. Id expect him to finish the season strong as Rodin are stronger in hot conditions but its highly unlikely he'll be back in F2 next year. He'll reserve for McLaren or potentially get a rookie seat at Cadillac(Bottas/rookie?) for 1-2 years until either Lando or Oscar leaves, and that will probably be a lot sooner than not.

Cadillac using Ferrari power would make that unlikely I'd imagine. You don't normally get youngsters getting a seat from a rival. Mercedes reserve Wehrlein getting the Sauber-Ferrari seat in 2017 being the only real exception I can think off.

If Cadillac had Mercedes power units he'd have some hope.

That's true but Brown knows GM and Andretti better than anyone on the grid so it may or may not be something he is pushing with them. Ferrari don't have a decent rookie to put with them unless Camara skips F2. The reserve role at McLaren is much more likely.

Cadillac would be bonkers to take a rookie (not to say that it wouldn't happen). I can see a third driver role alright on a full-time basis with plenty of TPC running.

Never like that, it's embarrassing how weird he is. He has spoken about Dunne a few times but more in a matter of fact kind of way, then he started winning and there was backstage footage of Michel patting him on the back and saying well done and Dunne was like yeah whatever. Leo is a more accepting disciple.

I guess you cant have a rookie who comes from no money and annihilates the championship. Bortoleto comes from a lot of money/power, as does Bearman, Antonelli, Lawson. as does 99% of the feeder series. It's an absolute testament to Alex and his father that they have achieved what they have on a shoestring, incredible really.

Testament to McLaren too and I believe Stella who first saw him in Italian F4 and backed him much more than Zak to join the junior program. Ferarri trialed him and said no. He blitzed British F4 but his Italian F4 was very impressive to watch(many races still on YouTube). Second to Antonelli who was backed to the hilt with cash, Prema and the home crowd. He was refining his dive bombs on Antonelli during that season and won some very tough races in an average team. F3 "sensation" Camara was 3rd, In fairness he looks excellent now - money talks again.

Alex has without a shadow of a doubt the potential to be a world champion. Tommy Byrne with the right people behind him. We can but hope.

Plenty of rumours swirling around that Dunne is talking to Cadillac

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

any source of the rumours? or where would one read about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭JimBobSnob

Twitter, Google Dunne Cadillac, Irish media now on the bandwagon https://extra.ie/2025/08/09/sport/alex-dunne-formula-one-cadillac

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭JimBobSnob

It makes perfect sense for Zak and McLaren to be really pushing for this. Let Cadillac iron out his rough edges and prime him for when either Lando or Oscar leaves. Cadillac and Brown will also be aware of the potentially large Irish American fanbase for Dunne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,960 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Graham Lowdon said they are talking to 8 drivers. Checo seems to be a done deal according to rumours, plenty of information out there that they are talking to Bottas,Schumacher,Dunne,Crawford,Zhou and Checo. Cheo and Bottas are probably their bet option

It'd be great if Dunne got a seat somewhere next year. If I was Cadillac I wouldn't be taking him though, why risk a new team on a rookie?

I still see it as Bottas and Perez, but we'll see...

I assume they'll announce driver lineup at the US Grand Prix or around then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭JimBobSnob

Fair point but an the flipside of that Alex is a very fast driver and that could be exactly what they are looking for to get up the standings a bit. Having the likes of Bottas to steer him helps too, apparently Bottas has been great with Antonelli.

Another major positive Alex would bring is his growing reputation behind the scenes, simulator work, car setup etc, he is showing himself to be very technically adept at such a young age.

Also, McLaren would never risk it if they didn't think he was ready.

If Bottas gets a seat next year, do Mercedes-Benz have a driver in mind for reserve next year? Might we see Dunne hovering over Toto Wolff's shoulder?

    This too shall pass.

More likely to get one at McLaren. Current reserve driver Pato O'Ward is likely to concentrate on Indycar next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,960 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

I read that Bottas is the "third driver" and Vesti is the reserve driver. I've no idea what the difference is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,025 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I'd say it's more Bottas is the 3rd Driver. Vesti is a reserve driver. So in essence 4th pick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,768 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Vandoorne/Schumacher would likely be rehired as Reserve for Bottas if he leaves.

If Vesti left I'd assume they'd just run there own academy driver Strømsted rather than McLarens academy driver.

They are reporting last weeks news, reports coming out of Mondello at the weekend that he has been approached by several F1 teams including Alpine, Red Bull and Cadillac. Alex himself did not deny any of this just said he cant say anything and he just wants to concentrate on winning the F2 title. While I would say run a mile from Alpine, being Merc next year may rapidly change things for them, the renault engine was terrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,030 ✭✭✭CFlat

Rte reported on the 6/1 news that Alex has been linked with a drive in F1 next year and Cadillac was mentioned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

out of all the sources i would trust for F1 news, rte would not be top.

they probably saw the image AMKC posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭JimBobSnob

Apart from a few excellent interviews by Raf Diallo throughout Dunnes junior career, RTE have not shown an iota of interest in it until now. Bandwagoners
