Zappi settings

So we got a new Inster (7.7kwh) to go with Niro Phev (3.3kwh).

I had been charging the Niro off zappi no problems. However I know that the zappi wasn't properly set up to limit how much is drawn from the house, especially when other appliances are on. Can anyone please tell me what settings I need to sort out so that the zappi won't blow fuses if charging the Inster?

Tried chatgpt'ing it but not 100% confident the answer I got is right.

    TIA

You need to configure the grid limit to 52a or 11kw

    From the manual

    1. The firmware on the must be version 2.130 or above
    2. The Grid CT must be hardwired to the .
    3. The Grid Limit must be set to be less than or equal to the value specific by the DNO
      (Menu: Settings…
      -> Advanced…
-> [Passcode] -> Supply Grid -> Grid Limit)

    Thanks for that. Appreciate it

Does the Zappi not have a load balancing circuit back to the consumer board? It should do this for you.

What do you mean by a load balancing circuit? It has a CT to measure the grid, and you'll need to specify your import limits so that it stays within those and then it will manage it for you. I just realised I assumed the OP had a 12kva connection. They should confirm which one they have https://www.esbnetworks.ie/services/get-connected/understanding-connection-capacity if its a very old connection it may only be 8kva but I'm asuming as they have a car charger already its 12kva minimum.

Fairly sure we have a 12kva supply as the house is <10 years old.

I mean, none of the thousands of home charger owners have to dabble with any kind of load settings to my knowledge, and yet it all just works sweetly - appliances inside the house on/off, working in harmony with the chargepoint - no intervention required?

They should check, from memory a 12kva connection is rated for 50a continuous draw by esbn so official Zappi installers often cap the Zappi at 50a total load whereas it can easily be changed to 63a

Was a load sensor installed at the fuse board or ESB meter? Can you post up a photo of the screen and or app? Can you see what the house is consuming on the charger screen or app?

If the home has an electric shower a priority switch is required, so that both cannot operate together. The Zappi is the only charger I'm familiar with and it would seem negligent to me at least if they are being installed without configuring the grid limit. Here's an example of limiting in our house, I've got the house battery and car charging, water heating and kitchen appliances running during the EV window. If the Inverter, Zappi and Eddi we're not monitoring import they'd easily exceed limits.

Pic didn't attach for some reason, you can see the devices actively limiting their import but they must be configured to do so.

Didn't have to do it with mine? (Wallbox).

    Is is just Zappis?

The installer should set it up. It depends on what the heavy loads such as instant showers the house has.

Right….so the user shouldn't have to do any of this. @daheff how do you know it wasn't set up correctly by the installer - have you had some issues?

This is so wrong, you do not need a priority switch if your home charge point is load sensing which virtually every one is, all that’s required is a cheap CT clamp on the mains tails to be fed to the charge point.

Also, the Zappi is not a charger, it’s a charge point like every other AC unit, the charger lies in your EV.

    Only DC units are chargers.

    Exactly ☝️

Fit & forget, unless you have bought a very cheap & basic CP.

I got 3 quotes for our install, and they all included a priority switch at the time, as we have an electric shower. I only queried why it was there on the first quote and was told that ESBN didn't allow just the CT for load management, and the priority switch was a must, but that may have changed since.

I haven't had issues. But I remember something about him saying I didn't need to worry about the loading issue as my phev could only charge at 3.3kwh. So just want to be 100% sure I'm not going to blow the house up with the newer car.

I've fiddled around with the settings based on what was posted above. It's set to limit to 52a and I can see with the car plugged in the max rate it tries to charge at is about 5.8kwh when I have other appliances running. So looks to be set now!

Also somebody mentioned about an electric shower...I don't have one. Have a water pump though.

I think a lot of electricians just fit priority switches as standard when installing an EVSE. Mine was installed before load balancing was an option and it’s been left behind even after I upgraded to a smart EVSE. I ended up installing the load balancing CT a few months ago myself because we charge EVs and home batteries during a 4 hour window. Won’t bother removing the priority switch as we only charge EVs in the early hours and we don’t use the electric shower anymore.

you don’t need a priority switch for a zappi, mine was fitted by epower (so I assume was done right) and just the only the clamp was used. The house has 2x electric showers which are on a priority switch as required by regs. Curiously my electrician wouldn’t go near the Zappi install as he hadn’t the training and verde green wouldn’t go near it as there was a backup generator (on a manual changeover).
