South Douglas Road and the war on visual clutter

Nerd post incoming, however this is an expansion of a post I made to Reddit that I'd thought I'd share on here to start a conversation about the war on visual clutter. Another perfect example is the Dunkettle Roundabout (not the Interchange). There are six traffic lights all showing the same thing when approaching the roundabout from the city centre. In this (https://maps.app.goo.gl/gDzCgzp6DF9wAw5V9) view alone there are over 20 traffic lights visible, street lights, poles with cameras, poles with nothing on them, directional signage, warning signage and chevrons. Someone must be seriously profitting big time off of the sale of signs and poles as it's simply excessive

Closer to the city centre is the mess that is the South Douglas Road/N40 junction. As shown in the below photos, the junction has nearly 15 directional signs (a lot saying the same thing but slightly differently), over 30 poles and a handful of traffic lights. We can do better than this. Not to mention the main sign coming off the N40 used to be two sided, with one of the sides facing nothing. And it's also just incorrect (it states there are 2km from the N40 exit to "Douglas", plus the N40 should be in brackets as the road is the R851)

Fair play, I cannot stand the onslaught of signage and poles and directions we get everywhere in Ireland. It's pervasive…..you find it everywhere in the country and smacks of lip service/box ticking as far as health and safety goes. There was a blog post a few years ago about the volume, size and lack of necessity of some of the signs around Dublin. Not long after it got a bit of traction online, a good few of the offending pieces were removed by the Council. It goes to show that you can have a positive impact on these things.

    Here it is: https://motorwayservices.ie/dublin/

I saw your post on Reddit and thought for sure "This is a fella from the Boards Roads section." You're bang on with this. Douglas is especially bad but it's a problem across the city and indeed the country. There's a sign by the old Omniplex forbidding right turns (https://maps.app.goo.gl/mqwemJdQZ4VQwYReA), something which hasn't been possible at any point in the sixteen years of Google Street View because of the wands between lanes and, after 2020, the fixed bollards and raised footpath. The wands are gone. The sign isn't. I wonder would a councillor like Peter Horgan, who crusades for footpaths (and, before his election, the Marina's pedestrianisation), be willing to take up this cause; certainly I can't imagine the executive taking the initiative.

I have raised similar signs with Peter Horgan before and he has got some fixed, but unfortunately this isn’t his ward (this is City South Central, while he is City South East). Does anyone have any experience with the City South Central cllrs?

I also completely agree about the no turn sign! The signage on the street by the Village SC Car Park all refer to the N25 instead of the N40, too. I’ve emailed the SC management about it but no response

Great video. Nice to hear someone with some ideas, not just moaning.

came on to post the same video. Some great ideas about what could be done. I love the ‘Paint Panna’ montages.
