I struggle to understand people posting so negatively about the financial position. 2000 was the aim, but at least €25k additional income has been generated, which seems pretty good to me

Presumably the new advert system for non-subscribers would also increase revenues.

And a lot of free advertisement in the Indo and various others places about the imminent demise would have seen a big bump in casual visitors that i would guess, temporarily, more than offset the loss of casual visitors from googling that is the reason given for the sub request in the OP.

There is no urgent financial need to close this place down, but the owners can shut it down whenever they want and liquidate their assets. That has not changed and is unlikely to change.

Because the initial post of this thread is quite alarming and particularly these 2 paragraphs:

We’re now at a crossroads. Without a change to our financial position in the coming weeks, we will be forced to shut Boards.ie down.

Our goal is to reach 2,000 paying members. We know that’s ambitious - but with a mix of member support and ad revenue, we believe we can keep the lights on.

I mean Mike is talking about keeping the light on with 2000 subscribers, not thriving. Don't get me wrong, I really hope the site stays.

As has been said, the lack of communication from Odhran (who has always seems disinterested at best) is wholly disheartening. Same crap as when the Vanilla Debacle happened.

Frankly, I think he should just sell or somehow gift this forum to someone / a group who actually gives a toss about it. I don't think the dog should be put to sleep just because of a lazy owner.

It's the lack of real transparency and planning that is stopping me from subscribing.

There seems to be zero security that this isn't just a cash grab. Have seen it in various industries where a business is on its last legs so they load up on deposits for work and then go under and disappear with the cash.

I have 0 understanding why people are subscribing.

The board.ie management and employees could potentially pay themselves with your subscription money then close shop.

Rest assured that your subscriptions are not being used for the future upkeep of the site imo.

All you need to do is see the traffic going to boards.ie decreasing month on month so ad revenues are also decreasing.

People may feel they are doing a good deed by subscribing, but I believe you are being taken advantage off by a potential money grab before the site shuts up shop.

you mean that me remortgaging my house to prop up boards was a bad idea?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,438 ✭✭✭Esse85

Haven't seen any evidence to suggest it's anything more than this.

More like easily mislead. But hey, some people are easy targets.

24 years here and haven't due to how feedback was ignored for 10 years, leading in a huge way to where things are and continues! to be ignored (how many times has what details do boards get from payment provider being asked now....6 times??)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 53,862 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

do you think it's a scam? because if so, it's a piss poor one. it's netted (at most, based on 500 subscribers) about one years pay at minimum wage.

it costs about 15c a day per user to support the site. which is about one sixth of a cigarette, or one fortieth of a pint. probably about one mouthful of beer.

that's cheaper than the nastily cheap looking gif Esse85 posted.

@_BAA_RAM_EWE (how many times has what details do boards get from payment provider being asked now....6 times??)

And has been answered here by Odhran,

"Everything is stored securely on stripe.. we don't keep any card details."

but people want even more clarity on it after that. Boards don't get details from the 'Stripe' because what is supplied to stripe is for insuring your the legitimate person to authorize the payment and is not transferred to the merchant! (not even sure stripe themselves see that transaction information, between you and the payment method used).

My maths was simpler. I saved a packet on 4 smart watches and a laptop a few weeks ago that is never have saved only for boardsm the best BA I've had in the 20 plus years I'm here. Well worth 50 quid to give the forum a chance if I watch it sinking from the lifeboat, so be it.

I’m not too worried. I really hope my subscription will help keep the site going. But it’s only 6 euro a month. Not going to lose sleep over it. If you want a good service you pay for it one way (subs) or another (ads, )

    I agree.

A good service? A lot of people wouldn't agree with that.

I think people are paying in the hope it gets enough time to return to being a good service.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I paid for six months. If there's no obvious improvement by then, I'm out.

I saw that answered ages ago, though…

    Jesus, you're a real ray of sunshine…

It cost me €50. Beans, relatively. If the site goes down next week, I'll not be running to the small claims court. I mean, I pay €6/month to support Dublin Inquirer because it's worth supporting, even though I might only read three articles a month. I read a hell of a lot more threads on Boards, and get useful feedback when I've asked questions.

yep, i pay for dublin inquirer too, and don't demand to see how they actually spend 'my' money.

(with an irony that they're very open about how they do it - sam tranum recently posted a breakdown to bluesky)

There is a post over on GUBU dot ie talking about a rumour of a boards buy out?! Anybody know if there is any truth to that?

Anyways, looks like it will be bought out. RedC, Noel Kelly Management and Bayer Media in some sort of combined deal. Don’t see the value in it myself, but this wouldn’t be my area of expertise.

HA, indeed Noel Kelly buying boards would be very GUBU indeed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,826 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

They are rolling back to a worse version of the site and loading it up with more ads for non-subscribers. Seems like theyre killing the user experience, but I'll bide my time and see what happens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,067 ✭✭✭ForestFire

Just using your post as an example, but People keep using this and similar to justify giving money into a blind pit, which if that's what you want to do fair enough.

But it should be understood that the deal you saved this money in came from another user, not the owners of this site.

In fact most of the revenue for this site is generated directly by the users themselves, but either generating content and views and their own generated add views etc.

So... yes you saved money from the platform boards provides, but the real saving is from poster....maybe you should revolute them 50 euros...and no it wasn't me 😄

Well the way I look at it is if Boards wasn't here I wouldn't have known about all the bargains I got over the years so that in itself is enough reason for me to chip in and try keep it afloat. It's not exactly life changing money if I lose it.

In fairness there have been plenty of bargains posted in the bargain alerts forum which people have availed of but some of those people, by their own admission, were buying things that they didn't need. They only bought an item because it was reduced in price and not out of necessity so effectively they were spending money that they normally wouldn't have done.

Glass half full / half empty depending on your own perspective!
