Is it safe enough to buy a reasonable condition N64 these days?

The PAL N64 outputs S-Video too, I have a cable for mine. A lot of TVs will accept S-Video over at least one of the SCARTs.

I never bothered going NTSC for the N64, still have my original one from the late 90s.

The s-video cable give pretty good image quality, you just have to make sure you get a good one as they have to be custom made otherwise you get a blown out white image. There were places that sold them a few years ago so imagine they aren't hard to find or expensive. It's just you still have it deal with 50hz n64 framerates.

Also just a note about an everdrive, it's also worth it for the fan translations. Wonder Project J2, Siren the Wanderer 2 and Custom Robo fan translations are well worth playing and there's also a fan translation of the god tier Sin and Punishment.

Just to add, if the Everdrive is too spendy, do consider the SummerCart. I have one and its very, very good.

It also does N64 DD emulation.

Loved Conkers bad fur day but not a game I can see myself dipping in and out of. Just bought a NTSC-U Super Mario 64 cart last night so am locking in on getting an NTSC console. Will keep an eye out for Goldeneye, OOT and Diddy Kong as am particularly fond of these and will get a Summer Cart for everything else.

I have a PC and Steam deck emulating all the games as it is so am hoping for a "virgin" N64. It's more about holding a piece of history for me than having a workhorse. I love old graphics/resolutions as well. I avoid all the remastered Crash/Spyros/Tomb raiders as I love the old pixelated games so much.

As time goes on, can see it getting harder and harder (and certainly more expensive) to source original hardware that isn't crap condition or a repro.

RGB modding is certainly the way go IMO on original units - S-Video is decent, was really the way to go with imported units back in the day. Mentioned already above, but if looking to hook up to a modern display, the Analogue 3D would be an option whenever it ends up back on sale depending on how much you're willing to sink in - certainly starts to become a real alternative when people start to look into HDMI mods on real consoles. Serious lack of actual real footage of it though ahead of it's debut this month. Analogue's prior excellent record is all the hype right now. May end up jailbroken in the end as well going on what's happened to their other devices which could negate the need for a flash cart, but no guarantee on that.

The other modern option, leaving aside the baggage associated with Palmer Luckey and his military collaborations just for a moment for arguments sake, is ModRetro's upcoming M64. Looks to be an implementation of the existing MiSTer core, but with nothing yet to show of it (bar a promo piece purporting to show Mario Kart running on a unit which is not visible) it's a bit of an unknown quantity, but with an agressive $200 target in this tariff economy, plus their Chromatic's previous good showing, it may well do what is promised.

Hmm seems import fees make Japan units prohibitively expensive. Found a really nice one with expansion, 2x controllers and 4 games with free delivery for 160. I assume would need to pay VAT at 23, maybe another 10% import duty? And I assume a carrier fee as well. So looks like could be an extra 60eur just to get it in. Still better value I think than ones I've seen on adverts/EU eBay.

Edit: actually looks like duty is 0% for games consoles so more likely 40-50eur to import.

I generally find stuff from Japan avoids import tax a lot more frequently than stuff from the US would. You might not have to pay anything at all.

Took a chance on it. Was asking them to put a "50eur" value on the pack but it seems a new automated ebay system does not allow them to do it. Which doesn't give me much confidence it will get through as will likely have all the proper import docs on it for customs to have their way with me.

Was never a fan of the transparent colored models Nintendo used to put out but there was just something about this watermelon red console that I couldn't get out of my head after I saw it!

    That's absolutely class, looks gorgeous!

One great thing about buying stuff from Japan is I find, in general, it just tends to be in better cosmetic condition. That all looks really great.

For me, Ebay tends to handle all the fees when buying from the US and Japan, so the price you pay on ebay should be the final price. Not guaranteed mind.

If you play NTSC games on a PAL N64 via a converter or more reliably an Everdrive, they play at 60Hz without borders or at least extra borders.

Some (all?) support S-Video too which works great on a CRT.

Got hit with a 36euro VAT charge along with 14eur handling fee today on the console. Takes a bit of the lustre off the purchase but had accepted that this was likely to come. Just FYI to anyone buying in from Japan.

Sounds like the expedited shipping option with DHL or some such? Guaranteed to be charged that way. Strange though as anything I've bought from Japan recently (and the US), eBay has handled all of the taxes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,825 ✭✭✭Markus Antonius

Was thinking the same myself as ebay didn't give an estimate or even warning of charges on the item page as they did with other things I bought. Carrier is Fedex.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,686 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Aye, sounds like it just went went through a normal point to point sale from the seller and you'll always have to pay the VAT at entry in any case. If the seller used the Ebay Global Shipping programme or International Shipping programme as some countries call it, there would have been a breakdown of the extra estimated fees and it would be added on at checkout. Bit odd as most sellers willing to post internationally would normally be signed up to it - might just be worth revsiting the item page to see it if mentions either programme.

Either way it's going to be paid - it's the one thing we seem to be good at at a bureaucratic level over here 🤣 But at least there's no import duty, so swings and roundabouts.

It was around 60 euro, customs was something like 45. Auction fees/storage/price I forget. Won't be doing again.
