You need a manager that could tell Ronaldo ‘you’re not needed any more, enjoy your retirement ‘

True. Nice won't win All Irelands. Looking ahead to next year, there will be a target on Tipps backs as champions. No guarantee they will even make it out of Munster. No doubt Clare and Waterford will hope to winter well.

Interesting to see where Clare will be. Loan just signed a long deal so does that signal a rebuild.

O'Donnell is doing his usual "not sure" and claims many of the lads his age might be going too.

Fully expect all the clare lads bar conlon maybe back next year. O'Donnell has been teasing about retirement the last 2 years at this stage.

What age will O' Donnell and Kelly be next year?

Around 32 I'd say, both going a long time though, both on the panel since teenagers.

I presume you said the same about Brian Corcoran back in the day?! 😂 🙄

Brian Corcoran actually played when he was asked to play. He stepped away from the panel in 2001 after losing to Limerick in Munster. He was asked back by Donal O Grady winter 2003 after Cork lost to Kilkenny and Setanta was heading off to Australia to play AFL. There is a bit of a difference.

It is different to Corcoran in fairness, but committing to county hurling isn't an easy decision, especially for a lad with such a bright career still ahead of him. If he walks away he'll owe Clare nothing, but I'm sure every fan in the county would love to have him back again, sure what harm if he takes a bit of time to decide

He's probably my favorite player outside of my own county so hopefully we'll see him back.

Yeah for me along with Cian Lynch he has been a joy to watch for many years now.

None of them will ever top the undisputed greatest player of all time though, Martin Comerford.

Now that the season is over, what is the thoughts of the championship this year?

I know Tipp fans will have loved it, but if we can take it from a purely non-partisan viewpoint.

Personally, I can’t help but think it was an awful year for hurling. Too many poor or one-sided games, the league moving further into challenge match type of competition, the massive decline in Leinster, Munster being ok at best.

A few highlights, Kildare winning the McDonagh Cup being one of them.

I think the sport has real problems, and they manifested a lot this year. A lot of it is down to the ignoring and disregard for the rules too, but the hurling itself was boring for the most part, a few games apart. Too much tippy-tappy controlled hurling, not enough open chaos. The attacks feel rehearsed, almost as if the sport is now hurling-by-numbers. That and Leinster falling into oblivion are the two most worrying aspects.

I hope the GAA will at least attempt to take stock and make changes.

The league was a huge improvement on that 2 group crap.

Some good narratives like Kildare, Dublin and Tipp providing shocks and Clare, Limerick and Cork bottling it in different ways. But no brilliant games where the game was tight because both teams were on fire.

The last bit is stupid though l. If you "take stock" then you would see that changes would be kneejerk and the exact opposite of taking stock and thinking with a clear head.

Probably a bit underwhelming compared to other years. But there was some brilliant championships last few years so hard to live up to it every year.

Leinster is a worry for sure. Refereeing is a tough job but the standard is poor. Too much inconsistency. Eg, darragh mccarthy got 2 yellows in the semi final for harmless enough taps. John mcgrath did the same in the final, ref ignored them.

He was asked when on BBC Gaa social podcast; if the other older guys stay he will to was the jist of it

They brought up his astronaut ambitions in a light hearted way. He was asked did he ever get reminded of it while playing.

Against Tipp and playing against Ronan Maher he was looking for a free from the ref, Maher says "fcuk off to space you stupid (unt" 😄

An average season I would say. The drama of the Munster Final and Tipp's comeback in the AI Final papered over alot of cracks in the system. Leinster is becoming a problem. The competition isn't strong enough for 6 teams. Cork hammering of Dublin shows that Limerick got caught through complacency and then you ended up with a lob sided semi final which is not good for anyone. No real jeopardy in Leinster. It's really 4 teams going for 3 spots and Kilkenny and Galway certs most years.

After a good opening round in Munster with 2 draws the round robin fizzled out with a Limk\Clare dead rubber and Cork always going to win at home v Waterford. The worst position is losing Munster finalist. A system where they go straight to semi final and losing Leinster final and 3rd in Munster playoff would offsite the poorer standard in Leinster. 3rd in Leinster would be out but it would lead to better game in Leinster Round Robin.

so a row at half time - a few hot heads (players) - manager there somewhere - who is to blame? players for not listening to their manager or the manager for being too soft?

a disgrace in any event - scandalous that their egos got in the way…

I think a few folks were correct in saying the best thing that happened for Tipp was avoiding the Munster final.

Simon Harris is monitoring the situation...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,085 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Depends on where a team is I think. Would Tipp have been overconfident against Dublin or would they have been brazen enough to take on Cork the way they did if Limerick had beaten Dublin.

For me it's no to both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,468 ✭✭✭giveitholly

So you are saying that Tipp would of approached and set up completely different if Tipp had met Cork in the semifinal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,085 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Completely maybe not but the idea of "nothing left to lose" may not have been there. It seems fairly accepted that semis can be cagey in a way finals are not.

Also the same pressure may not be there and I don't see Cork bottle the semi the way they did the final.

    No camogie thread I presume.

Hanna Looney hasn't changed her spots.

    Good game.

That ref is a joke. Galway getting away with all sorts, you're one who got hit should have been booked for pushing in the first place

This half the ref is doing a classic even things up.

Cork can still easily win this. Galway a bit lax.

2 'Rabits' on the pitch. Probably a first in an All Ireland final.
