Smart Meter Billing Method

Is it normal practice now when billing, not to include a "meter" reading?. Electric Ireland don't include it in my bills, I know (if one is familiar with spreadsheets) that you can just summate the readings in their daily rolling spreadsheet When I changed back to Electric Ireland, I jotted down the meter reading and very occasionally I summate all the 1/2 hourly readings and add it on to the original (my) meter reading, they always do add up. Still and all, I think it shouldn't be a big deal to include the meter reading in the bill, as one can, if so inclined, just compare it with the actual house meter reading.

    Hi John,

I have a new smart meter installed in May, moved over from a day/night meter which was on MCC02. I picked a day/night (non-smart) tariff (MCC02) with Electric Ireland. The breakdown on my bill includes the readings and looks like this:

You're saying that you don't get a similar breakdown when on a smart meter?

I have never seen an Electric Ireland bill that didn't show meter readings, even if just estimates. Can you pist a picture of the bill?

For what i remember for EI they have the usage breakdown on reverse of the billing page.

Just checked my bills with Electric Ireland for the last two months, same for me. Hadn't paid too much notice to it since going with the smart plan but it's odd that they don't show it.

I changed to an Energia Smart Plan recently & during discussions with their sales team I was advised that future bills will show units consumed only & no meter readings. I have received my first bill which is a combination of non-smart & smart plan usage. The non-smart portion shows the meter readings & units consumed whereas the smart plan portion shows units consumed only. You can get your meter readings from the ESB Networks data file titled "Daily snapshot of day/night/peak usage in actual kWh". The file shows the Read Values and the Read Date and End Time. The read date & end time is a bit confusing. To get the reading for midnight you have to subtract 1 from the date shown, if that makes sense.

meter readings are listed on the bottom of the page where you see your usage on the esbn site

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭Gooser14

Is that also the case where you have activated your smart meter? I activated my smart meter on 23 June & the last meter reading down on the ESB Networks site is dated 22 June even though a new bill was issued on 17 July.

i don't know, mines isn't activated. strange they aren't listing it, they're getting the readings anyway

As you running office2010, AI finding hard to decide what ads to load for you… 😉

Same here on a PC and I'm running Office 2010 but it is not that. I also tried to access the site on a tablet which is not running Office 2010, with the same result.

It is just a problem with the site I'd imagine, maybe weekend maintenance?

I asked this question on another forum in relation to Yuno bills a while back. The reply was that providers are no longer obliged by the regulator to include the meter readings on the bill, just the number of units consumed. Yes, you can get the readings from ESB networks but this smells of regulatory capture to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭John.G

Strange alright. When you say you can get the ESB networks readings, do you mean the daily spreadsheet numbers?, if Yuno or others are your providers can you still see a daily spreadsheet like the ESB networks one?

I presume the providers don't actually see the displayed meter reading but nothing to stop them issuing a generic one with the bill? which does does exactly match my actual meter reading on the few occasions I've summated all the 1/2 hourly readings.

Reading were handy when it was all manual and you could compare what was being charged and checking if a meter reader made an error or if a reading hadn't been done.

With smart meters, they know the precise use down to the minute, so I can't see the need for the reading unless there was some wild unexplained difference.

Probably becasue we are used to seeing the readings it just looks odd, but did we ever actually use the reading for anything?

The meter readings were a comfort blanket and a point of validation. By moving to the new system we have lost nothing; it's all available to the bill-payer on the ESBn meter page, in more detail than it ever could be documented on a two-page bill.

Most people arn't interested in all those pretty bar graphs, all they want is to see the meter reading on their bill, they can and frequently do just compare it with the house meter reading and yes " a point of validation", is this not a perfectly reasonable expectation?.

It's there too under downloads - I was just trying to sell you on the concept of pretty graphs!:

    image.png image.png

As I have a DN meter then it's the "Daily snapshot of day/night/peak usage in actual kWh*" that I need to look at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,854 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Yes, and that is still possible, you just need to register with ESB networks and you can download the meter readings in as much detail as needed. This can be compared with provide bills - an extra step which is annoying but still possible.

By the way, I just noticed a small issue with my ESBn account just there today and I thought that I'd share it.

I transferred energy provider in May and my previous account listed my wife and I as the account owners as "John Doe & Joan Doe". My ESBn account was linked to my MPRN number with our names "John Doe & Joan Doe", but on transferring the energy provider in May I must have forgotten to add my wife back in. As a result my MPRN was no longer associated to my ESBn account and the MPRN could not be found when searched for. I figured out that I had to modify my personal details on the ESBn site to simply have "John Doe" listed; then it accepted my MPRN number and the data reappeared.

So watch out for that blooper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,780 ✭✭✭Gooser14

Alternatively you could have called your current provider & asked them to add "Joan Doe" to the account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,307 ✭✭✭10-10-20

You know that with some providers it triggers the re-creation of the complete account and requires ESBn to resend the introductory letter! It would also take around 2 weeks to complete.

I'm with ElectricIreland and the only file I can see is 30 minute reading in kW, I don't see the Daily Snapshot one or the other calculate kWh one, is this because I may not have registered with ESB Networks, tried to do this just now but its hung up on step 2. Or because I can see the 30 minute reading then I should be able to access the other two?.

You need to register with ESBn to get the meter data that I'm talking about. Here's the link. Should only take 5 mins to get online.
