Decision has been reversed? At least in Ireland? Sounds app working again as usual for me.

I dont know, it stopped working for me and it's not on the appstore for me either. Newish iPhone and latest iOS if that even makes a difference, unlikely.

Others have reported still working and getting updated from appstore but I dont understand how when for me it's clearly gone. But who knows…

I wont bother dicking around with trying to UK store or vpn. Tunein is working fine for me and live radio BBC6 is all I want.

Still working for me but I ignored the update and signed out of the App Store, hoping this will delay the inevitable shutdown.

I updated on Android today with no problems. Not using a VPN either.

I'd say this is a developing story.

I was abroad in Spain when Sounds stopped working a few days ago. Back in Ireland now and it’s working fine again.

    Hopefully this continues.

I almost exclusively listen to 6Music. Couldn’t imagine ever going back to any Irish radio station.

I haven't used it in a while. Just opened it and says it can't be used outside of UK. Based on the comments it seems very random. I'm on Android with no VPN. Anyone else using Android still able to listen?

now blocked for me. ****. Going to keep the app and see what happens in the next few days. It seems to have been very random for us here in Ireland.

I have a Yahoo UK email address.

Maybe that makes a difference. Who knows.

Bloched for me too this morning. I only listened to it yesterday morning and it was working. However, I fired up Nord VPN and connected to the UK. When I reopened the . I then disconnected the VPN and app and it still works. It looks like the interval might not be 30 days but doing a quick VPN open see I think.

BBC Sounds is gone from the App Store on iOS. I’m bit sure why I got an update yesterday but perhaps this was actually to enable the Geo locking? Anyway, I think I’m on borrowed tune with the app as it stands sadly.

Update on Sounds on my iPhone today.

On another note I’ve applied my VPN to sounds and then sent an old show to my Nest & is working away no problem after I’ve stopped using the app on my phone.

Handy as I like playing certain shows after they’ve aired on my speaker.

Gone entirely for me this morning, app and website. Disappointing but it will be Spotify’s gain.

Those that lost it, did you download the app from the Irish App Store originally?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,447 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Yes never been anywhere else but the Irish Appstore.

Maybe there are tricks around this but when I tried to go to a different appstore it required me to register a new payment method with a UK billing address. At that point I decided I couldnt be bothered trying to play a cat & mouse game which at best is going to delay the inevitable.

BBC said they werent going to restrict internet radios, third party apps etc so I'll just go with tunein.

I changed Android phones a couple of weeks ago. The BBC Sounds app auto downloaded to my new device and I've not had any interruption to my service.

    This too shall pass.

I downloaded mine from the Apple UK App Store years ago so maybe explains why mine is working, probably until the specified holiday period ends anyway.

I'd happily pay the equivalent of the UK TV licence if it meant full unrestricted access for the whole family to iPlayer and Sounds. BBC are leaving money on the table.

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Same here, rather pay them than Sky. The BBC archives are a treasure trove which I’d love to access.

The only workaround with Alexa is to turn her into a bluetooth speaker and stream from your phone.

Alexa won't play BBC stations from Tunein otherwise (by voice control). Google speakers will.

Select payment method as "None", then enter a UK address and phone number. This works for me.

x2 - I put BBC Sounds & Iplayer on my iPhone & ITV & MyFive also without problem

The Android app stopped working for me on Tuesday, even with the VPN workaround I use for 5Live when that's rights restricted. But today I tried it, without VPN, on Android Auto while driving and it worked straight away. Odd.

This hit me out of the blue the other morning, had completely missed that the Beeb were lining this up. My main bag is (or was I suppose) Radios 3, 4 and 4 extra on listen again/sounds, looks like that's one for the foreseeable…

Does ITV, iPlayer work without a VPN? I have those apps on my TV,but they don't work as my internet identifies me as being outside the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,274 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Nope, vpn (or smart dns) needed. Channel 4 is the only UK broadcaster that supports irish viewers I think.

    It's a pain.

You can go back 6 hours on Radio 4.
Radio 3 and 4 extra back to start of the programme.

Some of the Radio 4 content ends up in the podcasts section on the BBC app, but not all.

Some of the Radio 4 drama podcasts end up on Spotify.

I think they are still figuring things out.

Yesterday I was listening to Radio 4's Broadcasting House live via my smart-speaker using Google Assistant. Suddenly it stopped with a message on repeat that the content I was listening to had geographic restrictions and was not available. This was in the middle of an interview.

Aren't we all supposed to switch to the BBC app.
