I think he was seriously peed off with Vingo, he covered Arensman's first couple of attacks while Vingo sucked his wheel and then went f you I'm not towing you up to him so you can jump me for the stage win.

Vingo jumping him for 2nd proved him entirely right. That said if Vingo had helped he knew he was probably handing the stage to Pog too. A vicious circle but absolute plaudits to Arensman for attacking the Yellow jersey, chapeau!

    Quite the opposite in fact.

Almedia is the main man with Ayuso drafted in.

I just read that UAE says he's doing it but it'll be reviewed when the TDF finishes.

If Pog wants to ride the Vuelta, it will be without Ayuso. And doing the Tour-Vuelta-Worlds this year appears to be particularly tough, if one is trying to contend in all three. So some big decisions in the coming weeks. Massive climbing metres in the worlds this year, akin to Austria 2018 I think. Would really love to see Vingo go and take the rainbow jersey and show he's more than just a one-trick stage race rider. Its very obvious he's the only rider who can climb as good as Pog in recent years.

He won’t be riding it , plenty of decent accounts on X have more or less confirmed it’. Worlds will be his priority.

So you are saying what is said on x trumps what UAE said?

maybe team instructions to ride conservatively to protect GC is bothering Pog when his instinct is to attack attack

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,866 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

There was nothing conservative about the tactics from UAE yesterday. Wellens made sure the break was held and then pulled in quickly. They were going pretty all out as a team for the Pogacar win.

He looked miserable on the podium, looks fed up of the tour and just wants it over with. Vingegaard is a really fustrating rider to watch, even when he has nothing to lose he still doesn't take risks, yesterday he was in a great position to win the stage, but, left it far too late, it's not the first time he has done this either, I remember a similar situation the year he won by 7 minutes, the stage was there for him to win and he just rode to the line. He will leave this tour without a stage win and totally broken by Pog!

Pog is currently on the Vuelta startlist per PCS (Ayuso is not). I was sure there was some official confirmation from UAE he was planning the double. It's very possible that will change now anyway based on Pog looking fed up with 3 weeks of racing. Vingo is on the list as is Eddie (added a day after he withdrew from the tour). I don't know if PCS add and remove people from the list based on guesses or official comments but they seem to be basing it on something. You can see the changes throughout the year.

Assuming Pog doesn't go I hope Vingo doesn't either so we can maybe have a close fight. Hopefully some of the other EF irish lads go too.

PCS have agents tell them stuff and team contacts. They’re usually a very good indicator to be fair to them, but of course team line ups can change at any stage.

UAE’s boss said last week that the plan was for Pog to do the Vuelta but that they’d reassess after the Tour.

The last couple of days have been very hard and the weather has been shite. I’d say they’re all dying for some time off. Wouldn’t read too much for the rest of the season from demeanour or body language

They confirmed it while leaving scope to re-assess if needs be. So about as confirmed as it could be, but who knows if the last week has changed things.

“The Vuelta is on his program,” team principal Mauro Gianetti told Velo. “Let’s see what happens at the Tour, but normally the Vuelta is on the program.”

If I had bet on the outcome of this stage, I can't imagine ever picking KG to win via solo breakaway. Bizarre final 30km, tired bodies everywhere, superb ride by the winner.

I think if Pog races the Tour like he instinctively wants to there's a chance he burns out over the three weeks.

Grand Tour winners very often win by ekking out time in ITT and a key mountain stage or two. Other than that they typically ride really conservatively.

That kind of formula isn't why Pogacar rides a bike, I think it bores him sh1tless even it's smart. I think it was 22 or 23 he went mental on a few stages for very little return and paid the price later in the Tour.

He has the physical attributes win anywhere but I think he's far happier in the spring and the worlds. Team and sponsorship might say otherwise though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,188 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

I agree with you in that this way of riding bores him, but, with very little extra effort he could have won at least 2 more stages, even won the green and Polka dot Jerseys, with little risk of losing the overall lead. I suppose its very easy to say this sitting at home watching him, but, it does look like he has held back his natural racing instincts in the last week. Hopefully we see some fireworks tomorrow!

Merckx was The Cannibal as an insult not a compliment. Got a lot of criticism for not sharing the glory just like Pog is now and I think he is aware of this.

Holding back bores him but I'm sure he is told it's favours in the bank.

You gotta be greedy to be the greatest. I think anybody criticising somebody for winning as often as they can is just jealous.

I never competed at a level like that but I completed at a fair level in a couple of sports and I always wanted to win. There were some people who didn't like that when I went on a run in the two individual sports I played. Obviously they didn't say it to me but friends told me.

They didn't like the teams when we won a couple of titles close together. Outside of the supporters that's commonplace.

Outside of Katie Taylor, it's quite normal to hear lots of detractors of successful sports stars from our own country. It's very sad but I really think it's jealousy.

I’m sorry these detractors in Ireland stunted your success eagle eye

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,364 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The detractors I referred to relate to elite Irish sports people if you read it correctly.

As regards what I did, hearing about people not being happy drove me on, made me want it more.

Ben wins super combatif award... gets to get up on the podium later. Fair play. A stage win, a 2nd and 3rd, a couple of days in yellow, top 10 in the GC and now the combativity award. What an incredible tour for him.

Only Rog and Arensman seemed to try as much and I don't think Rog made himself too popular by not helping Libowitz so it is pretty well deserved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,190 ✭✭✭✭dahat

    Yep.

It’s more or less confirmed now that he won’t be there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,813 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Jonas Abrahamson was second apparently. Think he’s the only one who could argue about Ben

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,184 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

Carlton hoping Ben wins the combative award. Thinks it isn't announced until the end of todays stage.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 30,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

It's 99.9% not going to happen, but would love after the last week to just see Pogacar horse it and take the stage win. He deserves it more than any of the sprinters.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 26,147 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

I'd agree and it is one of those, going way off topic here, very peculiar differences between the US and Europe. Very often the europeans are more supportive, everyone gets a shot, equity over equality. The opposite to the US. But in sports, they almost seem to hate anyone hammering it in when they are well ahead in the US whereas I would be more insulted is someone sat up because they were winning by so much.

What do we think of this year’s Tour overall?

Not a vintage Tour for me. Kind of reminded me of the Armstrong and even the Indurain years, all a bit joyless and soulless. Seemed to be a lot of negative racing this year, summed up by yesterday’s stage.

I’m not convinced Pog had the legs in the final week to go for the stage wins. Although I think he’ll go for the stage today. He’s great to watch but he even seemed a bit bored with the race.

GC was very poor this year. Whole tour felt like a procession The fight for third spot and top 10 for Ben added a bit of jeopardy to it.

Mont Ventoux was the stage of the tour for me. Healy and Paret-Peintre knocking lumps out of each other.

Looking forward to see how today’s stage plays out.

Saved by Ben Healy for us. I would say neutrals from practically everywhere else has hated this Tour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,067 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Neutralising the stage is bollix. Either make this a real stage or just go back to it being a silly sprint/parade.

If Pog crashes so be it. 21 stage tour and crashing on 21 should be no different to any other stage.

    Now you’re talking!

Imagine the yellow jersey finishing on Champs Elysee clear of the bunch.
