hi folks I have a house in the country with a yard beside it and a bit of a drive way, have ducts into entrance of drive way and clear line of sight to the yard. I’m pretty handy with networking from work. I’m wondering if someone can recommend a kit with 8ip cameras and nvr. I do understand the yard 150m away I will have to get p2p to get video from there, I don’t mind I have power in the yard. I intend to bring out data outside using data over power cables getting 40mb per second so I’m happy with that. But I have no clue about what setup/manufacturer. Any installer quotes are massive but won’t tell me anything about brand or models. So any and all help is appreciated.

I bought a cheap model a few years ago which came with 4 x UHD cameras (QVIS). I should have known it was 'end of line' or something akin to it.

It was not long before I discovered that neither the cameras nor the nvr could be fully managed from a modern browser. I have forgotten the details but do recall active X being one requirement. I think Windows OS was also a necessity.

Anyway I still use those cameras, but now have set up my own dedicated system running AgentDVR with CodeProject AI on a Coral Edge TPU. I have full control over what happens. True it is not "as neat" as the commercial NVR but I control it and can update it, unlike the NVR. The AI takes care of confirmation of such as 'person, vehicle' or whatever else I want to record. Minimal false positives these days.

There are several software options should you wish to go that way. I paid for the hardware and the software is free for home use.

    what you think ?

The specification of the cameras is v.good for what you want.

I have read some negative reports about Reolink systems. I would want my cameras and NVR to be compatible with any Onvif system/cameras etc.. I am not sure that is the case with Reolink, but I have no direct experience with them.

Of course if you are comfortable being tied to one proprietary system then that will not matter either way. I would suggest you do some searches to be sure there are not things you might wish to do that this equipment will not do. I got caught by not doing my homework.

For instance if my NVR should croak it, then the recorded videos are lost because the vendor set up a hardware encryption system on the recordings which I as the alleged owner cannot change or turn off. I can only copy clear video from the HDD using the specific NVR and no other, so I am stuffed if it dies.

It was things like the above that caused me to move away from relying on the purchased NVR. It is still running, on constant record on 4 cameras, but I very rarely access it.

I have a parallel system running, monitoring those same 4 cameras, plus two others, using AgentDVR and CodeProject.AI on a Coral TPU. I am happy with this and not at all concerned about the QVIS NVR or how long it lasts.

But that is me. I have a vital need to be in control of my equipment and how it operates, so the majority of proprietary stuff is not suited to me.

Here are a few links which might interest you. Even if you do not use any of them they should provide information which you can use to judge the suitability of products that do interest you.

Could you link me to something you could recommend ?

I would not be comfortable in recommending a system I have not used, sorry. Best I can do is to tell you to watch out for limitations on proprietary gear if you do not think you can manage the recording side of things yourself.
If doing it yourself there are some very good and somewhat expensive cameras out there - Dahua comes to mind.
For my testing I bought cheap cameras from China …. up to 8MP … for €30 to €40 each, but the 5MP cameras I got with the QVIS system are still running well, so no bad report about them except for modern browser access is not complete. Just be sure if you go that route that you get cameras that are Onvif compatible as almost all gear will be able to use them, and that they are not tied to using some 'app' or other to admin them. A modern browser should be sufficient to make adjustments to the camera settings (as well as admin any proprietary NVR you might get).

    HTH a little.
