I agree. I'm delighted to have made the qualifying standard, even though my oom is in the 1400s. Never write off a competition, they can trundle along for a long time. Large numbers of applications could be rejected. People get other jobs and turn down offers. The most important consideration is to be in the mix.

also made the cut delighted with it. Between 150 and 200 as well, much better than expected.

those who came in the top third .. can you tell me honestly if you did lots of prep or how you did so well, or are you naturally good at this stuff.
im fall down on verbal reasoning, v weak at it I don’t know how to improve for next time (816th)

Honestly yes, I did do a load of prep. That said I also feel like there is a lot of luck at play, I feel like the same group of people could take those tests again tomorrow and I could come 500 places lower and there wouldn't be any real differentiator I could point to in my performance.

I did not do any prep but I have done numerous pas campaigns in the last few years

I didn't do any prep and generally do very good at these sorts of tests so I do think some of it is natural aptitude but I would wonder if the prep sites do give a leg up if you don't have the aptitude. I think my biggest advantage is being a very quick reader so never pressed for time and can go over them a few times. And perhaps it's obvious but for the verbal reasoning I always read the statements first so I know what I'm looking out for as I read the press release or whatever it is.

I did no prep, and finished in the middle for the job situation stuff, but my background/work is in maths and that helped for the other section and dragged me up a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Perzival

I finished in top third, I did no prep other than one or two previous PAS tests in the past few years. I think these tests are generally designed to test natural aptitude, I don’t think there’s a whole lot of preparation you can do really other than getting familiar with how the tests work and practicing reading fast.

For the job situation tests, I think it helps to be already working in a management field or something similar to the civil service, as you get a feel for what the best approach might be just by having real experience, although this doesn’t always translate into the test examples.

how would you know if you are in the top third??

Finished in the top 100. Very pleased with that, obviously.

I did pretty much no prep apart from the PAS examples/familiarisation, and the evening I went to do the tests, found I'd no desk calculator so had to use the one on the PC. I have done the AP tests several times previously, and the SEO a couple of times (the local authority equivalent).

Is there a secret to it? I honestly don't know. I've passed the AP e-tray exercise and failed the interview; I've passed the interview yet failed the (practically identical!) e-tray (they'd be the ones where we were supposed to be working in a section doing translations); I've always sailed through the verbal reasoning and numerical tests - except for the one time I didn't! Could not tell you what I did differently that time!

There are some tips I've learned and follow. Job simulation: be consistent. Some of the scenarios are quite similar, you should be giving roughly similar answers. As someone above mentioned, for verbal reasoning, read the questions and see what they're looking for before you read the piece - it'll save you time. The analysis one, there are usually a few obvious "cannot say" answers which you should pick up on quickly - the information just isn't present - so you mark those down asap and move on to the ones that actually require time to calculate stuff. And it's often not necessary to do a full, accurate calculation - sometimes it's fairly obvious that there can only be one correct answer out of the several presented, without having to actually do the sums to get a 100% accurate result.

So, yay, great result for me… now I only have to hope I showed them enough of my room while swinging a webcam around, and that my application form was also good enough, and I actually get shortlisted for the next stage!

thanks. I just got an OOM but I can’t see anything showing the total number and therefore what the top third is

    Hi All,

I failed to make the cut (had a very high score in one part but didn't make the cutoff in the Job Stimulation/SJT part).

The Situational Judgement part of these PAS is where I have fallen in recent years (do very well in other parts).

Thr lack of transparency on "correct" answers makes it challenging to improve (I'm a AP equivalent for 8 years now). I tried the jobtestprep material this time yet the SJT examples seemed at a lower level than the PO type ones in the test.

Advice/tips would be welcome from those who did well in the Job Stimulation part.

Otherwise, Interdepartmental/internal PO competitions might be a better bet for me, as they won't have such a step.

Best wishes to remaining candidates in the process!

Not to be a downer but… Considering very few actually ended up in roles out of the 2022 campaign (15 in one year for example), and considering it dragged on at a snails pace in the last year or so - is there any expectation that this panel will be any different? If 1800+ are on a panel, how many realistically might even be interviewed over the period before it expires, let alone get placed on a panel, etc?

It was in a separate message which they sent shortly after the first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 mckenncl

    thanks so much!!

I sure hope you aren’t my future PO with an attitude like that btw! Very unhelpful

in no way an expert but did well this time around (and previously). 710 out of 800 in the SJT using the following ‘rules’

    1. Mainly ignore the ratings other than the most positive, most negative and the very odd middle rate-only had 1 of these in this competition
    2. If it’s your section, call a meeting and include your team, If it’s based on something outside your section ask your manager for advice
    3. Never delegate work upwards
    4. Take responsibility for errors

it may help that I am a civil servant but I have never bought prep exercises or gone for coaching. My issue is I am in a non Dublin based location so unless at the end of the process you’re in the top 2 forget it. Hoping this will be different as it’s a pilot and they haven’t asked for location preferences (yet)

Don’t let this put you off. The hardest path I had was to get out of Clerical Officer Grade which took me numerous attempts and many years

Thanks so much, I probably was broadly correct yet put them too much towards the middle....thanks again and well done!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,056 ✭✭✭Ficheall

Interesting! The highly/slightly etc bothered me a lot - iirc for the most part I hedged my bets (since there were attempt marks for adjacency) and just picked whether things were positive or negative and went for the middle of those two. So the middling marks were unsurprising.

Not defending that poster necessarily, but to be fair, if you’re going for PO and can’t keep track of the messages PAS are sending you, it does ring some alarm bells. Were you not wondering how everyone else knew what third they were in and your first thought be, maybe you missed something instead of having someone tell you that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Perzival

If the thread from the 2022 competition is accurate, it sounds like they got to between 500 and 600 OOM before that panel expired but it’s hard to tell exactly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 mckenncl

totally fair! Just thought the poster was not helpful that’s all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,361 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

I mean… dude. They literally sent a message with exactly the information you were asking for, and you would have received a text to say to check your message board, and/or an email…

This is really good advice. I'd add to it:

    1. Pick the action that gets your task/assignment/project done.
    2. After that, protect the reputation of department/organisation, and minister.
    3. Options that include communication are good.

Anybody know how long the panel is for in this competition?

Very short one this time. March 2026.

Are there rigid core hours throughout CS or some flex for parents in work hours if you need to drop/ pick up kids?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,056 ✭✭✭Ficheall

Nvm - looks like it's only considered after one already makes it to the end, so no benefit:
"To be considered for a position requiring specialist Irish language skills, candidates must be
successful at the final selection stage of the competition and undergo certain additional
assessments through Irish (e.g. interview, written test, etc.) at an external assessment
centre, prior to being considered for such a position. They must achieve the required level in
the Irish language, e.g. demonstrate a minimum Level B2 on the Europass self-assessment
framework. publicjobs will only contact candidates if a vacancy arises in their chosen
location and their indicated level of Irish meets the requirements of a position available."

Core hours don't apply to POs.

Unless there's a business need, it's likely you'll have some flexibility. At PO level you'll likely be doing regular out of hours work too and that generally buys some flexibility during work hours.

I wouldn't expect it to be easy to regularly drop & pick up kids as a PO. It's a high level, demanding job. You can't say no to the Minister because its school pick up time.
