A lot of unsavoury scenes around the ground tonight at the Derry Bohs game.

And before I say anything, I'll say we have our own brand of wee scumbag up here who is always looking for trouble, but tonight the Bohs supporters have to take a bit of responsibility too.

They roamed the city centre at tea time in a large group, masked up and basically acting the maggots, trying to stir up trouble. They then made their way towards the Brandywell, and en route attacked young teens who were guarding a bonfire. This is what got the tension ramped up, and even a lot of our scumbags who normally stand in the new stand decided not to attend the game, I assume to get ready to face the visitors as they left the game.

They had themselves armed with fireworks to shot at the Bohs fans as they left.

The tension at the end was palpable, and I got me and my kids out and away asap. Derry fans were being told by the stewards to get into their cars and away as quick as they could, as there was a line of local cars smashed up by Bohs fans.

I hate this side of Irish football. The product is flourishing at present, its a good league but some real lowlifes won't be happy until the public stop going to games .

I have no sympathy for any visiting fan who comes looking for trouble getting injured, but the majority of Bohs fans are normal folk. And they are as likely to get injured as a hood. Its the reason I simply won't go to Derry away games any more. I dont want to be attacked and grouped in the same class as our wee hoods. Im a normal fan, but that seems to mean nothing when you are wearing your colours.

Cork were a mess when he took over and they're still a mess now. A one club city and they can't make it work. Ushers put €1.5 million+ into it since he took over. Im not defending Usher, I just think people forget the reason he owns them is because the fan owned Co-Op almost bankrupted them and they were looking to run from a sinking ship they had created.

Covering their faces. I witnessed it with my own eyes, I was in the city centre when a crowd of them walked past.

Hes spent all that money and we are still no better than we would be under foras. The man has NO clue about how the football operations of a club works. With a bit of luck he will sell up after this season.

And in other news, it was a good game between 2 evenly matched sides.

Rovers will be delighted with the result.

What a sad bunch of arseholes! You’re right @NIMAN, no place for that crap at matches!

What a bunch of idiots. "F the RA, I'm the RA". You'd nearly laugh.

So you think Usher should get a pass because Cork City were a sh1tshow under Foras?

It was clear before the season started that the squad was painfully thin and lacking quality. Relying on young loan players from the UK and academy players most of whom have been painfully out of their depth because Usher spunked most of the budget on injury prone Seanie Maguire and Ruairi Keating who unfortunately got a bad injury. Usher got a lucky break with Tim Clancy leaving of his own accord and his brainwave was to bring Ger "Rabbit in the headlights" Nash for a relegation dogfight. Did Nash just get hired because he is friendly with Usher and conveniently also from Kildare? His managerial highlight has been running the Aston Villa creche.

At least under Tim Clancy they were some bit competitive.

Usher has also repeatedly lied to the fans. He had a well publicised meeting with the fans and promised 3 new players after it including one high profile league of Ireland player which was all bullshit.

The squad is now somehow worse than before the season started and there is no discernible transfer strategy that I can see.

Waterford when they sacked Long got in a grizzly battle hardened manager in John Coleman. The exact type of profile of manager to get you out of a hole. Sure they wont play the most attractive football but they wont be rotting in the graveyard that is the first division next year.

I know I'm rambling here but under no circumstances should Usher get a free pass. He has somehow brought Cork City backwards from when he took over.

He has good commercial acumen if he just stuck to that and hired a proper Director of Football to run football operations.

There is a saying "A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" and that certainly applies to Usher. Just because he likes watching football matches doesn't mean he is qualified to run the football side of a club. Its pure arrogance on his behalf to think he can swan in from selling sh1tters and he has shown no sign of learning from his mistakes

As someone who has been travelling to the Brandywell as an away supporter since the 1980s, I'm very aware of the sensitivities of a police presence in and around the Brandywell.

But, at some stage, you need someone, with authority, to go in and deal with away fans up to that behaviour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,663 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Yeah, I’d fully believe alot of what was said there in terms of the provocations, but there still have to be legitimate questions asked around Derry’s ability to hold home games in the Brandywell from a security perspective.

Should not help most of them as the idiots usually just mask up before they enter a area and in front of CCTV in shops etc-

Over 18 loyalists were arrested at the recent violence in Ballymena and that stopped the Trouble ASAP- arrested because they were got on camera-

Let's hope the Guards get good intelligence for arrests to be made-

Looks like something you'd see in a Belgrade Derby or from Argentina.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,751 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

The bother was in Derry, guards probably not involved much, unless the PSNI ask for potential names etc.

Reports that once the Bohs fans starting attacking kids and smashing cars, the PSNI were contacted. But as usual their response in the Bogside is limited, and the people of the Bogside have to accept that they aren't going to get a standard police response due to past history. You can't have your cake and eat it unfortunately.

How can you be allowed hold home games somewhere with that level of police presence though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,751 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Well that's an argument that's 50 years old now. I personally dont know what the answer is.

Well I do, it was to develop a multi purpose, multi use stadium in a neutral part of the city, rather than redeveloping the Brandywell, but that ship has sailed now.

As I said, if the police aren't acceptable to be seen patrolling around the area in their normal day to day work duties, then you can't go crying about their lack of presence when you need them.

The area is very deprived, and as a result you will always get anti social behaviour there. Travelling fans have been on the receiving end many times over the years unfortunately. Its even worse when those fans have zero interest in causing bother themselves. But in the case of last night for example, if people arrive in the area masked and armed with hammers, baseball bats etc, then there are plenty of wee hoods in the area who will be more than happy to have a fight with them.

As usually, the 1% or less ruin it for everyone else.

I completely understand all this from a Derry perspective, and alot of the videos I’ve seen online suggests that a section of the visiting folk wanted trouble and got it.

But Derry were already given a suspended stadium ban from something similarly of a security incident involving pyro.

With the other 3 Dublin teams all to go up there still this season, how do you conclude that things can just carry on in this respect? The Derry fans we encountered when we won the league up there in November were probably some of the most decent home fans I’ve encountered in my 25 yearsish in football, but does someone have to suffer permanent life altering injuries before something actually gets done about the security issues people face while inside the stadium.

Im 100% with you. When you have thugs running around with hammers and baseball bats, and potentially knives (probably only a matter of time), and then others firing multiple fireworks at people in very close quarters, it is only a matter of when, rather than if, someone is going to get very seriously injured, or worse.

Then of course we will hear all the talking heads coming out and saying how terrible it is, and how its so sad. They know its happening now, and its now the issue needs to be addressed somehow. Its not going to stop on its own.

The LOI is flying at present. Attendances are up across the board, teams challenging every year now in Europe and standard really good. Fans are returning but you can guarantee that if sh1t like this continues to happen at games, then the casual fan who has started to bring their kids along to games will eventually say, "bugger this, I'm out ".

Last night was a good game of football between 2 decent sides. A tough and evenly contested battle. The Bohs fans in the stadium made for a great atmosphere and I was happy to see so many made the trip as we normally would have a fairly empty away end. But unfortunately it was the thugs NOT in the stadium at the match which get all the attention this weekend. At halftime as I was taking my son to the toilets, I witnessed the stewards trying to stop Bohs fans scaling the perimeter wall to gain entry. These guys were outside roaming around the streets. It was them who threw the pyro from outside over the stand and on to the pitch, which no doubt has now damaged the surface again. The pitch is bad enough with having burnt patches on it! Imagine coming up from Dublin and not even coming in to watch your team.

Sadly this will all blow over in a few days and it'll be forgotten ... until the next time.

I didn't go up myself as I'm at a music festival but I was keeping an eye on ticket sales and was happy to see we had our allocation increased due to demand.

Sad to see what was seemingly organised violence pre-match and then obviously what happened after was crazy. It wasn't just a row that can happen at any match when you've young lads on the gargle (and bag you'd assume). It was premeditated.

The policing of the Bradywell is a problem, you'd wonder is that why these types of fans target Derry away.

Anyway, we move on. Decent draw.

I was at the Derry game last day of season with my son and would reiterate that the Derry people/fans/stewards were exemplary.

The problem with what the Bohs fans did , for me, was a reminder of why I’m so reluctant to bring my son to a hotbed away derby (other then rovers were there’s safe place to park, get away safety in numbers and I’ve not experienced trouble there). Bump into the wrong dopes walking out of the ground (dalymount/Richmond) and who knows what could happen.

Always the 1% d*ckheads that ruin the reputation and fun for everybody else.

Everyone involved in that shite are utter morons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 383 ✭✭michael-henry-mcivor

The PSNI will give any CCTV evidence to the Guards and ask the Guards to make arrests-

I think there is to much watching brit soccer violence in Films and young hoods thinking of starting a firm in Ireland-

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,663 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Decently sized security presence leaving away section of Dalymount. If you’re especially worried about something happening maybe 5-10 mins away (I would say extremely unlikely) I’d say you could cut those fears out by just not wearing colours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 674 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

It’s not just soccer , I’d say it’s deeper than that, a lot of young male kids seem very lost and desperate to find some sort of meaning or tribe to join.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 674 ✭✭✭Dogsdodogsstuff

I was starting to warm to the idea of trying to goto a match in both grounds. You are right about not wearing the jersey and it makes sense. But I sort of feel it defeats the purpose of going to a game to enjoy and not wearing your Color's for fear of attack.

When I was originally thinking of driving to Linfield match (which in hindsight was ridiculously safe) I had said to my son we might be better off not wearing jerseys and he was asking why. So when I start explaining, I’m wondering what he must be thinking. “We should prob hide that we are shels fans as a precaution in case we meet the wrong fans that may attack us!”

I appreciate I am being overly cautious. that’s why I’ve only gotten fan buses to Derry and Linfield match, even though I was hesitant to go to either game. I’m not having a go at Pats or Bohs, just seem to hear more story’s of messing by dopes around their games (I don’t have to worry about any shels dopes). I’m sure we would be fine, just trying to game it out here and hear people’s story’s confirming it will be grand.

As I’ve said, I don’t want to avoid away days because of the small chance a few sh*theads might ruin it.

If you have to wear plain clothes going to away games in the LOI, then i dont want to attend them any more.

I was referring to the post that said the bottom 4 won't change. Pat's are currently in the bottom 4 and personally I think that will change but perhaps you disagree?
