There was an error displaying this embed.

Treaty v Derry in the FAI Cup, so a good excuse to also visit Crew, Treaty and Mother Mac's.

The 2 Treatys have teamed up this year so there might be a bit of craic in the brewery before the game.

Had been meaning to give this a try, will grab some soon. Been disappointed with some of the pale ales I've had, KPA and Limeburner most recently. Albeit Limeburner is a kolsch style. Wicklow wolf elevation is one I keep going back to.

Anyone tried the the Third Barrel Pale ale from Aldi? Or any other recommendations welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,893 ✭✭✭Doodah7

Not surprised you were disappointed with KPA. Kinsale Pale Ale used to be one of my absolute favourites but they changed the recipe a few years ago and completely ruined the taste.

I don’t want to diss a brewery but I have beer drunk sing spectacular from blacks and, to be fair, my initial experiences probably put me off trying much of their stuff. It hasn’t helped Tgst they seem to have a finger in loads of pies, beer and several types of gin and a whiskey. I tried she if they’re flavoured gone and those didn’t really appeal either. I think they’re mixer gibs rather than standalone.

Third Barrel Pale ale from Aldi

Can I ask what this is called… ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭babaracus

Didn't know they changed the recipe but definitely not the great beer it once was, it's not bad though. Perhaps it was a moment in time but about 5 years ago, possibly before the haze craze, there were some cracking IPAs available. Anyone remember Boom Session IPA which used to be sold in Aldi? That was exactly to my tastes, a really enjoyable beer. Original Yellowbelly Citra too. My go to nowadays is Little Fawn.

Eat sleep pale repeat. Think it was released last year in several places so not a brewed for Aldi exclusive. Had one last night, it's very nice as pale ales go. Certainly a step up from the stuff Dot and OBrother brew for Aldi

Re White hag being out of stock. Good few up on webshop now including build your own case

It's been my experience of late that the quantum of one off specials / imports etc has really slowed of late. I'm not sure of I'm the only one.

Perhaps it's looking back with rose tinted glasses, but it feels like the amount of specials out of the likes of O Brother, Lineman, Whiplash, White Hag etc etc have all dropped off considerably. I know O Brother have moved to a new premises, so that explains that to a degree. Even Kinnegar's Brewers At Play series doesn't seem as frequent. Wicklow Wolf is juuuust about keeping at the pace I feel like it has always been.

A lot of the imports coming in are now just being priced too high for me. Whilst I might be able to win the internal argument to pay €6.50+ for a Whiplash from time to time, I'm very slow to pay as much for as of yet unknown brewery to me.

My basket seems to be more and more core range repeats of late.

    Just an observation.

I haven’t read through this thread so apologies if it’s been mentioned but the priory market in tallaght has a great craft brewery that’s selling all pints for €6.

    https://www.priorymarket.ie/the-tap-room/

They’d an interesting looking raspberry beer that apparently is like a cider but is still a beer!
None in stock when I was there on Sunday just gone so I stuck to the pints of pilsner.
They also do a tasting platter (flute?) for €8 which has a stout, pilsner, IPA and some other beer.

Good value and choice I reckon.

I had a similar thought yesterday. I hadn’t been in Galway in ages so while I was there I popped into the Salt House. It was practically my local when I lived there over 10 years ago as there was shears a huge variety of new types svd brewers every week or two.
Yesterday when I was in there were mostly IPAs on and nothing particularly exotic either. Fine but besides that it was 2 kinnegars, rust bucket and Jack Rabbit and their own GBB stuff. Really there was lots of mainstream stuff i have cans of here anyway in the house and a few others but even those were things like budvar. It just felt like some magic had died.

I see Brewdog are closing 10 pubs in the UK. I'm surprised to see they're closing Gallowgate in Aberdeen as it's the original and not as big as the other two. Had a good night in the one in York also but it's up against stiff competition for craft.

Surprised they are keeping the Playworld they built in Waterloo. That thing must be bleeding money.

I think that's operated by SSP, like their other transport ones?

Rye river sales up as are losses. Doesn’t seem to be great times for the breweries.

It's mostly down to once off expenses of building a new brewery as the article itself explains.

I always forget that Rye River was McGargles. That early branding was absolutely awful and I remember thinking it bizarre that they were trying to push it around London early on too.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,342 Mod ✭✭✭✭squonk

TBH I’m still out off Rye River from that. I know they’re good but my head just screams McGargles if in pick up a bottle. They might as well have called it Duff!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 3,462 Mod ✭✭✭✭Black Sheep

Ah, the beers are totally different now, in fairness.

McGargles' beer was as bad as the branding. But the Rye River has been class for years.

I always got a tinny or tarty taste off the McGargles stuff, put me right off buying any of their later brands for some reason.

They do occasional small batch releases in cans with a different design. Those have been consistently great. I do enjoy some of their core range from Tesco as well, especially the retro IPA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,338 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

I remember when an IPA I could see through and was under 6% was just called an IPA - now it's a "retro"! How times have changed! 🤣

The whole IPA thing has gone seriously far up its own hole at this stage. Back in the day when there was a lot happening in the craft scene I used to complain that IPAs were becoming a bit of an arms race with nite and nite bitterness drug added all the time. There diversified now course into variants but ask largely seen to be silly strength and overly strong taste in some cases.

Western Herd in county Clare do a couple of big ones that actually work nicely, but I've really gone off a lot of the others. Many are so cloudy that they almost taste grainy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,338 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

A few years ago, after-work drinks in the late, lamented Alfie Byrne's with colleagues. One a confirmed yellow tasteless lager fan. Barman keeps trying different IPAs on her "because there has to be one you like!" - eventually she is made take a sip of some cloudy as all hell NEIPA. "What do you think of it?" "That's fuckin' custard!" She got a lager…

Funny enough I don't like IPA except the odd "tropical" DIPA or higher multiple of IPA. Gotta be real cloudy too and I can't explain why.
