@jmcc The domain name and forum existed prior to 2000 but the company (Boards.ie Limited) dates from 24/01/2000. The article is about various Boards Group domain names and sites being acquired by Boards.ie Limited.

Thanks for clarification, but I did say in others comments that there was no public used Boards.ie prior to 2000? Have a read of what 'Cloud' said in the interview of the bet to register the domain, Spin Solutions (I think) had to be renamed for a day to obtain the domain name.

"After his experiences with the IEDR, Breslin was not confident that the chosen name could be registered. “So I made him a bet,” says Murphy. “If I secured the domain name, would he build the site? And he agreed. Murphy then proceeded to change the name of his company from Spin Solutions to Boards for one day, gathered all the paperwork and submitted it, and was granted rights to the domain. “True to his word, John put the site together,” says Murphy."

Extra ads for those not paying - hopefully they don't ruin the experience entirely, otherwise how do we expect newbies to join? They'd need something they can use for a bit before they'd pay surely?

The move to Vanilla has not been a pleasant one for most members with one problem after another cropping up on numerous occasions. As one issue was resolved another had to be dealt with and to this very day there are many unfixed issues that we are expected to endure. Firing up more ads isn't going to attract new members nor hold on to some of the regulars.

I don't know what the solution is for Boards survival but for me personally I won't be donating until such time as the page bouncing and the cursor jumping issues are sorted. There was a time when it was a joy to use this forum but not anymore.

Back then IEDR had a "no generics" rule. Since "Boards" was effectively the company's trading name, it was accepted. The problems of people trying to get a .IE domain name back then were legendary. The early WHOIS for boards.ie used to show t/a Boards, I think. The application to register as a new company for Spin Solutions Limited was on 18/May/1999. A company had a better chance of getting its .IE domain name then. There's a Boards business name registration for a body corporate (company) with a date of 14/June/1999. The CRO records generally show when a business name registration was issued by the CRO but not when the name started to be used. That's generally on the certificate details, I think.

Boards.ie existed in 1999. There are posts here from 1999 but the search only goes back to 30/June/1999.

Unlike the heavily automated process of today, a registrant for a .IE domain name then had to provide proof of entitlement before a domain name could be registered. The words 'cloud' or clouds' would have been caught by that No Generics rule. It was a very clever move by DeVore.

    Regards…jmcc

People with this problem are on the wrong plan.

One payment system for all. Keep it simple. Adding unnecessary complexity is what got boards into trouble.

it has stopped since the ads went. Not sure why but no issues since.

I'm all for people who pay getting a better experience, but hopefully the aim is to fix it for all users too. Like I said re. ads - the use of the site for non-payers should be good enough to encourage them to subscribe - otherwise we're on a hiding to nothing.

it was bouncing when I clicked into this thread, so not fixed. I believe it's to do with quotes not ads.

Depends on the thread I'm opening for me, on mobile. Some are better, some are worse.

I still have crazy bouncing on mobile. (Firefox on Android)

If the bouncing isn't happening on iPhone, that might be because all browsers on IOS use WebKit rather than their own normal engines. That would possibly be a world first in WebKit handling something better than Chromium / Firefox.

Fine but don't complain when lots of us have money available that Board's doesn't want. I don't know what you mean by wrong plan but we get free phone use & 20 euro per month to spend on other things. It's a pretty good plan to me.

It's not free. People paid extra to have this surplus of credit, which they can't spend. Why don't these "lots of people" get a refund and send it into boards.

Is there an amnesty on forum bans for those who subscribe? I'm banned from one forum and it's a block to me subscribing and I'm sure quite a few others.

it's not extra. with new accounts on three you spend 20 euro a month, old accounts you spend 20e (which you get to keep keep on your account) per month. I use to turn the 20 euro into 12 euro of BTC...lost 8euro to fees. Now I fire it into cash machine as nothing else to spend it on.

I use boards less - only because i don't get the summary email of thread updates like i used to.
Its a really basic thing all social media things do - email you when a thread you are following updates to get you back.
I would guess that is a big loss of engagement right there that could be fixed and cannot understand why that was not a priority in the new software.
Separate emails for each post is way too much emails and i had turn that off.

    “Roll it back”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,296 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

It's extra because someone can get the same if not better plans for less. It's only cheaper if someone use the credit for something they need and would buy anyway. If someone keeps building up credit they are NOT buying something that they need to buy anyway. For the network it a means to retain people on more expensive plans.

Anyway if people are happy that's all that matters.

Anyway my point was it uses less resources for boards if people just use the same payment gateway.

These been a litany of usability bugs and issues which make it difficult to use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,070 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

What cheaper PAYG plan is less than 20 per month & gives unlimited data ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,296 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

There probably isn't. But there are cheaper 30 day contracts.

On topic, I don't get the logic of not doing something because it'll only make a small bit of money. If boards is on the brink, then do everything to make money, everywhere.

I've paid for a subscription. Is there anything I need to do to apply it to my account, or is it automatic?

An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu.
