Cables at all the charge points at SuperValu Ballinteer have been vandalised or stolen. Utter **** ****.

    Here at junction 14 Mayfield.

Tried the new 200kw machines. Tried my RFID card and it wouldn't start a charge. Charger said it needed my phone. Tried the phone…times out.

Moved to the next one. Tried the phone. Nothing. Kept saying charging equipment not ready. Tried the RFID card and it wouldn't start.

Moved to the next (older) charger. It started instantly. 9 minutes from when I pulled in until the car started charging. I'm at the SuC and after 9 minutes I'm probably ready to move on.

I'd hate to be a newbie trying to do this.

*Also Tesla can f#ck off telling me to navigate to the charger the next time for quicker charging. That would be great except every single charger you are showing me is an SuC and junction 14 or any other place isn't on your list.

    General question

On a 150kw - if someone is already using one bay and i arrive and use a ccs available charger, do i effectively steal the power from them and the overall power is halved for both people ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭CivilEx

My experience "generally" on ESB fast chargers is that your charging speed will reduce if the pillar is shared with someone else charging at the same time. On the ESB 200kW units I've seen more than 100kW on my side with someone else plugged in, so the half rule doesn't always apply.

I'd always look for a pillar that didn't have someone plugged in on the other side.

Used this site for the first time a few weeks ago. The new ABB Terra 360kW chargers were a nightmare to start. I dont usually have any issues but first charger I tried it wouldn't accept RFID or the app. Moved to the same model charger beside it and got charging ok. However the Volvo on the other connector was having the same problems I had.

No amount of holding the CCS port helped. The higher power is great to see, but wish they'd went with Alpitronic chargers like they have with their GB arm.

I've had a lot of trouble starting charges on the ESB Terras over the last few weeks — I can't be sure, because all I get is a Charging Error on my car every time, but it feels a little bit like the cables on those things are so heavy that they're weighing down the port and causing some sort of issue with the initial connection.

Zero problems starting charges with Fastned, BP Pulse, Ionity, and Applegreen chargers in that same time period. And the only real difference between all of them that I can spot is that the ESB ones have much much heavier cables

I've developed a habit of holding heavy cables into the connector until the charging process starts.

If you search for the charger in navigation, it will precondition if Google Places/Maps believes the destination is a charger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

You have to search from the charger menu not the main one though

Unfortunately in my charger menu it oy showed all the SuC sites.

Even tapping the "one lightning" symbol (for slower chargers) and it still brought up the SuC ones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,163 ✭✭✭innrain

I have not found one single ESB site that doesn't do this. Having said that, I did not try their new Hypercharger installations yet. However, it is not stealing but sharing :)

I second the suggestion to hold the plug in when starting the charging process.

whats the etiquette then if i arrive and there is a bay free - do you wait and let the person who got there first finish their full power charge or plug in away ?

Plug in. The rudest thing you can do is take up a charging bay while not charging.

Yes if it's higher than 50kW then it'll allow the second plug to be used simultaneously, by design. The first cars charge rate will potentially halve, but that's life. If the driver gets grumpy with you just refer them the ESB ecars... If it wasn't allowed there wouldn't be a second bay, and the second plug wouldn't work.

Just when I thought Ecars were in danger of doing a good job I discovered the one of the chargers at Charlestown Service Station in Mayo has been offline for several days and can't be used

Luckily I'd enough charge to get where I was going and gave the car a fast charge there

I called Ecar and they said the charger has been referred to the manufacturer because of the issues with the connection

My question is why the charger is marked Offline and not Unavailable in the app. Pretty sure most drivers would do the same as me and see the grey offline status and think it's temporary

Some signage on the charger saying the damn thing is unavailable would be nice as well

ESB are very slow to mark a charger as broken. Even if they get multiple reports on say a Friday they wait until an engineer can visit, confirm the fault, try and fix it and if not then mark charger as faulty. Often 3+ days go by with everyone ringing ecars and failing to charge and comments on social media and negative plugshare check ins , but it makes their reliability statistics and uptime look good.

This one at Charlestown was broken at the start of July. Locals say it’s been broken for some time.

To continue investing in and maintaining this essential infrastructure, we are making an adjustment to our pricing, with effect from 30th July. This change will see an increase of €0.07 per kWh across all charger types and customer price plans in the Republic of Ireland.

This price increase is being implemented in response to sustained increases in operational costs and electricity network charges absorbed by ESB ecars in recent months. The new pricing supports continued investment in our EV charger network and the continued rollout of high power chargers, ensuring a robust and future-ready EV charging infrastructure.

I was literally just coming to post the very same thing. An increase of over 10% is definitely a bit steep! I wouldn't mind, but I rarely have any luck with ESB chargers, despite having an account and a fob for their chargers.. They seem to be very unreliable in my experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Increase? I didnt receive any notification but they should be dropping not increasing prices!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,178 ✭✭✭joe1303l

By email this morning, they’ll get to you at some point. Pity there isn’t any real competition for them.

surely if you drive straight in , the cable would have reached..

Ecars are certainly making Ionity look more and more like a bargain in comparison

that post can’t be read on mobiles. It’s a really bad , copy and paste.

ECars Seem to be undergoing a big roll out. I’d say the price increase is justified if it means a lot more chargers.

They should look at discounted off peak options.

Ionity looking very good now IMO.
Never had an issue with them & speeds are fast, consistent

The wholesale price of electricity has dropped massively over the last few years yet the price to charge hasn't changed. They were gouging and now with the increase they are taking the p1ss.

the wholesale price is only a small contributier to the cost of providing a high speed charging hub.

Also it hasn’t dropped massively in the past few years it’s sti higher than it was before Russo invaded Ukraine
