According to FBREF he's left footed... Cover on the right perhaps?

Scratch that, a quick look on YouTube and he's very much right footed!

I hate the way the cost of a player can ruin them. 40 million for Núñez amd he's a hero amd a success at the club contributing to a league winning team.

Agreed but nobody is suggesting judging a player on their transfer fee alone.

Just that the fee will matter when judging the overall and relative impact.

Bryan Mbuemo went for £71 million. I'd consider him a good premier league player, more or less at his peak, turning 26 soon.

That's kind of the benchmark now for a quality attacking player.

So it looks like Diaz will be leaving so I'm assuming we'll look to get another left sided attacker to compete with Gakpo? Rodrygo would be incredible and probably improve the team (no disrespect to Diaz) but aren't his wages colossal?

Are there any other alternatives that would improve us?

Adam Clery on Ekitike, interesting video

Have to be honest and say I don't see it. Even in the highlights reels he doesn't pass the eye-test for me. But I've been massively wrong before, I look forward to being wrong again 🤞

Nunez is judged on his clown behaviour and godawful misses. The price is incidental. He had been persistently infuriating to watch.

I doubt Gravenberch will be on the bench after the season he just had.

Does anyone think Mac Allister might be under pressure? He's by far and away the least mobile of the midfield 3.

Yet he's by far and away the best of the midfield trio

Mac Allister was prob the best performing midfielder in the league last season. He's not mobile but he more than makes up for it in other ways. He's a warrior and one of the first names on the team sheet.

If we're starting two players out of Szobo, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, I'd bench Szobo.

Not really, brilliant at reading interceptions, and keeps everything ticking over with his passing. He's the brain of our CM. You need someone like that behind Wirtz I think. And while not quite the pure athlete that Grav and Szobo are, he's still no slouch.

I think Grav and Mac are nailed on first choice starters in the two deeper positions.

I don't know what I'm trying to suggest to be honest. He was class last year.

Perhaps in a midfield 2, he might become a little more exposed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,398 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I think he'd still be alright in a 2 - but I know what you mean. There's no part of that existing trio that it feels like we need to replace or could really do without, but Wirtz has to go somewhere, and with Ekitike coming in it looks like it's as a number 10. Who knows, maybe it's a case of going back to Klopp's best team, where at least one of the midfield trio rotated out literally every single match to keep them all fresh.

He's the best midfielder in the league after Rodri

Yean I've no idea how we'll line up this season. I don’t who will start or what formation we'll go with.

Our full backs last year played much more defensive, yet we purchased two very attacking full backs. The midfield was the strongest part of our squad, yet we purchased one of the best 10's in the world. We are light in centre backs, yet we sold a very solid young CB. We wanted to sell Nunez as he didn't suit our system, yet we were in the market for Isak who is also and out and out striker (but can still drop deep of needed).

I'm just really excited for the upcoming season.

He's also, bar far and away your best midfielder!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 609 ✭✭✭Appletart Upsetter

Yes, I agree. I love him as a player.

Just trying to get my head around how Liverpool will line up next season and wondering if he might be rotated out a little more. It's hard to see where Jones fits into all this too.

I think we'll see something like this. I think Wirtz will go up front, and himself and Salah will almost form a front 2.

The 2 fullbacks will give all the width so they can stay closer to the goal. And Ekitike will drop deeper and link up with the middle.

Mac and Dom will be the engine and Grav will play from a lot deeper. I think this will also get the best out of Grav, his best work for us last season was taking the ball from deep and using that extra space to turn and drive through the middle.

If we set up something like this, the opposition can't really afford that spare midfielder to push on Grav and not allow him space.

The last number of games before the end of the season gone might give a better insight in to what way we'll set up this year. (at least at the back)

We seen Grav drop deep to form a back 3 when out of posession and we were pushed higher up.

As for how that translates this year i think that much will be the same, it's just every other position is up for grabs.

For me the only guaranteed starters are Ali, Kerkez, VVD, Ibou, Grav, Mac and Salah, i've no idea how the rest will line up.

I don't think we'll start our strongest 11 until the charity shield either, so we might have to keep guessing for another 3 weeks yet.

No doubt about it Slot has a plan, this time last year i watched a few interviews from players that played under Slot in the past, and the jist of it was 'if we lose a game of football it will never be because we were not properly prepared.'

Slot is fanatical about instructing his team to play a certain way and is happy to tailor it to the opposition game by game and will give specific instructions to each player individually. There is zero cutting corners with Slot.

That video has eased my fears a lot, those stats he put up at the start of the video were across all top 5 leagues in europe not just the Bundesliga👀

Former coach of Ekitike at Reims Garcia, speaking explained how Ekitike has always been a confident and ambitious player.

“He always was a talented player but some coaches did not like him because of his profile and sometimes because of his character,” said Garcia.

“They were thinking he was a little bit arrogant. He always wanted to be compared with the best ones.”

Ekitike was challenged to reach the levels of two unnamed strikers in the French top flight when he was at Reims, but he was aiming to reach Kylian Mbappe’s levels ''

I'd not be worried,he's just aiming for the top

I'm in the same boat as you on this one.

I have the fear about him.

Let's be honest, he wasn't on anybodies radar until his name popped up this summer. Oh, and that attitude that is spoken about screams clown to me rather than someone who has total belief in his abilities.

I'll be praying he hits the ground running because at that price he isn't a project player..

There is more than enough room for them all. We can't go 100% in every game, there has to be room for rotation, injuries etc. Mac playing 90 minutes like 60 times next season is in nobody's interests.

Are we writing off a lad who signed up yet? 😂

He could be great lads. Tbf to our transfer management in recent years, we hit more than we miss.

I'm not concerned about those aspects. He was definitely on Newcastle's radar, and we don't generally act on short-term information so I'd say we've had interest before. PSG went for him despite being stacked up front, and not making it into that team isn't a big indictment

As for his attitude, I agree with Rebel above, we've absolutely made a point of picking the right personalities in recent years, I don't think we'd have gone for him if it was an issue, so I don't think it will be

Just personally, the highlights reels don't show me a skillful player with great control, despite that being exactly how many analysts portray them. I get the slight impression that great looking stuff happens around him rather than because of him. But again, really look forward to being proved wrong, hopefully!

On the midfield next season, I think we will see a mixture of 2 sytles.

    1. Wirtz playing inside Left forward with Dom in the 10 and the other 2 lads holding deep to cover the full backs pushing.
    2. Wirtz playing the 10 with McAllister & Gravenberch holding behind him.

Different opponents will see us changing between the above in my opinion.
